your main issue is the hook setter is ripping it out of the mouth before the fish can eat it. also as you can see the hook setter is slamming it so far back you have like 3 feet of slack. slack ain't no good for fishing
@@solar704 hes fishing for catfish which catfish are bottom feeders. catfish need time to suck up the bait. the hook setter is just pulling the bait out of the fish's mouth. then with the slack it can just feel the hook and spit it out before the hook can hook the fish.

That contraption probably needs another spring in it. So that it can yank it harder & faster to hook it. And it needs to be anchored better in the ground if you’re going to install another spring.
The people saying circle hooks dont realize the amount of slack that thing is letting in the line when it triggers. Use treble hooks because the holder isnt very good at setting the hook.
@@travismason3014 circle hooks are very nice for big fish like catfish, and are very easy to set but you still have to set the hook. When the fish swims off with the bait, point the rod tip towards the direction of the fish and tighten the slack, that's how you set it. If the fish feels a strange light tug then nothing, as would be with the rod holder, it can spit the bait out before the hook is dug in.
I honestly have had bad problems with circle hooks and stripers in the hudson. Circle hooks work best with those, as well as leaving extra slack (not a lot just a foot or two so the fish has it longer before the line tightens). Hope this helps I've used one for years love it cat fishing for eaters
Circle hooks, and more slack in the line so the the rod holder doesn't set the hook to early. If that's a Carolina rig it will give them time to eat it and try and swim away with it before it sets the hook 🪝also Snell knot your hooks as it helps with circle hooks setting themselves

Most hooks aren’t actually all that sharp , get a small file and cut a 3 point on it this will allow the hook to cut its way through the flesh rather than being forced through like a piercing

A little stronger spring and I believe it will work great, circle hooks might work better
It might be triggering too quickly. Try messing with the trigger catch the way people do mouse/rat traps to make them more/less sensitive.

I would use circle hooks so it can set the hook better

That won't work. He needs a regular rod holder for that. This thing will jerk the bait and hook right out of the fish's mouth.
small minnows, cut bait, worms or grasshoppers

There's different sensitivity to that where you put the line on. The bottom is the most sensitivity. Try putting it in the second notch or third one
Get some circle hooks and some of the rod holders that let your rod stick straight up in the air
I wish people would stop being obnoxious about fishing just to get people to watch their videos. Act like you have fished before, and let that do the talking instead.

7/0 or 8/0
Trigger tension is too low. Idk if it's adjustable, but you need it to raise the amount of tension it requires to trigger the hookset
Hey try using a small hook like a size #8 #6 #4 for the fish you are trying to catch
You should use small bait like bluegill for they could just suck it up
I'm surprised it even tried to set the hook.
Maybe some refinement to the design or maybe just a different pole and it could have some potential.
