    I think I've watched almost every instructional video on MOD 1 tests, and these are definitely the best. Richard goes into detail in a way that the other videos don't. Crucially, he also gives very important tips, such as coming off the throttle immediately after the speed trap to load the front wheel. Thanks for these videos. I've got my MOD 1 March 27th. @@Lets-rideUk Cancelled my MOD 1 test because my training day went very badly today - not because I couldn't do it but because the instructor was a total axx. Told me from the start that he teaches by shouting and then told me that you should treat bikes the same way you do women..."you don't ask them, you tell them!" I left after an hour. Unbelievable. Swindon has a huge centre with both sides always set up for everything. Apparently the examiners are quite good and only have 1 speed trap out on test days so you can know which side your speed dependant parts will be on.

    • @Lets-rideUk

      Interesting - never had anyone fail for having ABS assisting, but only on the emergency stop exercise. On the hazard avoidance exercise there shouldn't be any harsh braking necessitating the ABS kicking in. Very difficult to comment without being there and seeing it. 🫤

    This is the only part of my MOD1 test i'm nervous for. Did a practice run at our test center and the first 2 times i clipped a cone. after that was fine (left swerve), then we did a few right swerves no issue as Nottingham test center can be either way round.

    What speed is just right for the emergency stop and avoidance and where do you shut of the power on both exercises I'm having issues not reaching the min speed requirement thanks 👍

    • @Lets-rideUk
      @Lets-rideUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Practice on a road hitting 32mph in second gear and memorise the pitch of the engine. It's 5000 rpm on our bikes. Then, on the test, have a practice run hitting that pitch when you do the controlled stopping exercise where there are no speed requirements. You can also have a quick run up to 32mph on the approach to the corner too. Best option is to go a fraction over 32mph and shut the throttle off just before the speed trap. Hope this helps.👍

      You recommend second gear but what do you think about third gear to keep the revs down on a 750 inline 4 thanks

    • @Lets-rideUk
      @Lets-rideUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We use 2nd gear on the 650cc bikes as it gives a good amount of torque, but not too much, and the engine pitch is quite distinctive. The 750 - depending on which one mind - will have quite a bit more power available and third gear will give the potential of way too much speed if you're eager on the throttle! Tricky one. I think I'd stick to second. One less thing to think about...😆

    I have failed my mod1 twice on this excersie as I hit the nearest blue cone. Everything else has been fine. Where should I be looking when attempting the swerve?

    • @Lets-rideUk
      @Lets-rideUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Target fixation, ie staring at the nearest blue cone, usually results in getting too close and impact. Focus more on the mid-point of the two blue cones. I suspect the root cause is more likely insufficient handlebar input. You need a good bit of energy in the steering initially to push the bike out wide. Have a look into counter-steering - that might help. 👍

    Can you please explain again where I can stop after the avoidance can I stop passed the blue cones or stop prior to the blue cones as long as bike is lined up between the two blue cones. Also I'm doing the mod 1 in Swindon is this a multi purpose centre so they do both left and right set ups thanks

    • @Lets-rideUk
      @Lets-rideUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The examiner will explain on the day but the easiest thing to do is to stop with your body right between the two blue cones, but we've seen pupils stop before them - as long as the bike is lined up as if to go between them. 👍 The problems are when the bike is lined up to the left or right, as if to go past them rather than through them. This is usually caused by excessive speed pushing the bike wide, or lack of confidence in leaning the bike through the swerve. Just do it like in the video and you'll smash it. 😊👍

    These are excellent videos but I do have a really stupid question to ask and I can’t quite see it fully on the videos to my question.
    When doing the avoidance, do you physically turn your handle bars to go around them or simply shift your weight to ‘bend’ round them?

    • @Lets-rideUk
      @Lets-rideUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No such thing as stupid questions when learning. 😊 Shifting your weight makes very little difference and will only result in a mild change of direction. It's all about handlebar input, more specifically, counter-steering. Have a look into this fascinating phenomena. Once you've got a handle on it, it becomes dead easy. Might have to do a video on it now I think about it!!

    Thanks for the video. I failed my mod1 on Wednesday this week on the hazard avoidance as I only got to 45kph. It was wet and I cornered at 23mph accelerated out to the speed trap but think I probably throttled off before the trap rather than after as I do struggle with object fixation and was paranoid about hitting the blue cobes when I swerved in the wet. Fingers crossed for next time 🤞

    Thank you ! Sorry I have another question. I am 63 amd decided to take my MOD1 on my 125 Honda scooter so I can carry my wife too. I won’t be upgrading to a higher spec bike. Anyway, the driving school taught me on a 650 to stop by leaning to the left and putting my left foot down on the ground and pressing the rear brake with my right foot. As the scooter has front and rear brakes on the handlebars, is it ok to put both feet down when the bike comes to a stop and hold the bike with my left handlebar brake ? What would the examiner look for ? Thanks

      Nearly there Paul - 48kph is a pass with a fault. Yes, the curve is best covered at around 19mph - 20mph if you can. Just makes it easier to get the minimum speed for the speed trap. Before your next test, try riding at a constant 50kph in second gear and trying to memorise the engine pitch, then aim for the same pitch on the test. Good luck on your next attempt. 👍😊

I have my mod1 test in a few days, so will re-watch them all to drum things in to try avoid silly mistakes and give myself the best chance of a pass, but the constant 'do this - fail, do that - fail' is a tad worrisome lol & as i have to travel quite a distance to get the test centre, and the time it takes to book a test or re-test is over a month due to so many wanting to do it, i wont have the chance to put any errors right straight away, so guess i'll need to be on top form :).

    • @Lets-rideUk
      @Lets-rideUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there Charlotte. It's all about handlebar input, more specifically, counter-steering. Have a look into this fascinating phenomena. Once you've got a handle on it, it becomes very straightforward. But the easy way to think of it is this; to go left push the left handlebar and to go right push the right handle. The initial swerve to kick the bike around the blue cone takes a good bit of energy into the steering, so in the case of this video I was pushing the left handlebar forward to get around the cone and then pushing the right handlebar forward to bring it back across to line up for the finishing cones. Find a quiet road somewhere and practice swerving left and right, left and right, left and right - push left handlebar, push right handlebar, push left handlebar, push right handlebar etc etc. You'll get it! 😊👍

    • @Lets-rideUk
      @Lets-rideUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are very welcome. Counter-steering only starts kicking in when you exceed around 15mph. To begin with, start with gentle pushes to get a feel for it, to start swerving gently, then start increasing the force a bit until you've got a good solid swerve going. Once you've got it nailed, it's like having power steering and great fun. 😊
