Before you going replacing the laser unit, please replace the 3 capacitors(C401/C408/C431) on the optical drive controller board first. This will fix 99% of the "can't read disc" issues on the GameCube.

I recap all caps on boards I work on, and confirmed boards were good after testing them with a working laser at 250 Ohms. Two lasers I had of the 4 I showed didn't even signal a light. The remaining 2 couldn't register a disk so the spindle wouldn't activate so there was no chance for a disk read error. It's a little different than the typical disk read errors that are often shown.
