You did very well for a first time shooter... well done! You're a natural. Anyone that can consistently hit a Target at 300 meters or farther is anything but lucky. You sir, have skill. I know it when I see it. After 12 years experience handling firearms, 7 year in the US Army /combat veteran, 4 years federal law. enforcement. Glad I stumbled upon your channel.
"Anyone that can consistently hit a Target at 300 meters" That statement is not true, it depends on target. He said 3.5cm off right and still 10 then it must be a big target. Still good shooting.
Erasus The inner ring has iirc a diameter of 10cm. The A target supports a max of 5, 10 or 100 points. If the 100 points system is used this would be 96ish. The diopter of the Stgw90 also can only adjust for 10cm per klick. The B target has two zones outside a figure, a figure hit 3 points and the center has a diameter of 20cm.
"3/12cm at 330 yards, this is very accurate". Negative Lindybeige, you are very accurate, an accurate rifle is useless if the shooter doesn't aim it true! The fact that you're hitting the paper at 300m as a new shooter indicates that you have a natural talent and that you're on your way to being an excellent marksman!
+Patty ... hmmm. Ok, here is the thing. There is this thing called MOA. For the K98, I would recommend you look that up before telling this story again. Lindy here really has found a gem in this rifle (and isn't such a bad shot). I've only ever used cheap rifles and the maximum distance I've shot at is about 300 yards. Trust me, just hitting the target at that range is difficult.
TheOrthodoxAlbanian Thing is that rifles tend to only be precise up to certain ranges, and K98 was actually a short carabine version of the Gewher 98 so it would have had a shorter range due to its shorter barrel it works for its main purpose which was a main infantry weapon for mostly medium range fighting, which is where a rifle without special optics or special ammo works best, to be perfectly honest I don't believe the I shot a target bull's-eye at 800 yards either, taking into account that it's effective range with ironsights clocks at around 550 yards
@Rad Derry it was probably his son doing that. Hickok isn't tech savvy and his son runs his channel, last I heard, and his son has a reputation of being a dick.
It's got just a bit of a kick there. Other than a single shot with an air rifle, my first was an M16 (not an AR15 -- M16A1), and it's got very nearly no recoil. Yeah, they jam some, and they're less likely to kill.
The rifle in the video is pretty much a German Mauser, a cousin of the Kar98. I am not sure which cartrige exactly it fires, but it would be one of the 7+ mm ones when one considers its 0.000215 MOA accuracy at 300 yards with a non-magnifying sight. And while yes, while you can stretch 5.56 to do under 0.5 MOA at 500, Well, not from THIS kind of rifle.
JSHADOWM its a domnestic swiss rifle. Mausers did not have a straight pull bolt. It fire standart nato 7,62 but in switzerland its official called 7,5mm On the new 550 we officialy use 5,6mm ammo when in fact it is .223 nato standart. Same on sniper rifles official ammo is 8,6mm which is .338 lapua

I used to live in Switzerland, so it's nostalgic to see the Swiss mountains, snowy hills and large valleys with houses spread out over small and large distances again.
I own a K-31 and I can vouch for its accuracy as a stock service rifle. I can, on a good day, get groups in the ten without a problem. The Swiss make fantastic rifles for their military.
Open mountainous terrain calls for marksmanship. Marksmanship calls for better rifles. That is why you get more record sniping shots in places like Afghanistan than you do in places like Iraq or Syria - terrain. In flat lands, you use cover, and being high enough to shoot over cover makes you a target. In uneven lands, cover is much more relative as there is, in essence, and third dimension to shoot through.
I say any terrain is good artillery terrain (I'm kidding, but if there is one thing about me that IS American, it is that big boom makes me happy. So long as no-one is hurt, of course)
Actually they were regularly fired. The Swiss who are presently conscripted are required to visit a range once a week and fire at least 100rds per trip. They were also regularly used in the field. My K-31 has a rough stock thanks to this, but the bore is mirror because the Swiss pioneered the use of non-corrosive primers and cupro-nickel jacketing. Also the powder leaves almost no fowelling.

Geordie Walker I don't know why there are so many anti gun comments on a shooting video. Europeans think shootings happen in the US all the time because of what they see on TV. The average annual mass shooting death rate in the US is about 70 a year which is very small in a country of over 300 million and there are many US States that have guns but no mass shootings and you can literally count the amount of murders in the state.
To all the triggered 12 year olds replying, I'm not saying that the accessibility of guns is the cause of the problem, not at all, it is the culture, a culture that Europe and Australia and New Zealand lack, and thus don't have a problem with gun violence. Taking away the guns may prove to help, but I don't know, it may not. What I am essentially cross about at the people in the comments is their calling of people who do not have a gun culture BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED ONE cucks, that's a really odd and rather harmful attitude.
I remember my first time with a gun, i was so excited. But then I realized i'm in the army and the maintenance sucked after the millionth time so I had dreams I could just throw my rifle into a ditch and burn it.
Now imagine being a guerilla with an AK - hooray, little or no maintenance needed. Only problem: you don't hit what you aim at and the other guy kills you
@Joe Mama Which is what an illiterate guerrilla in flip-flops would provide, as opposed to a trained soldier in an East German mechanized infantry division.
@@IrishCarney Honestly the military cleaning is usually overkill. Most rifles only take 10 minutes or less to give a decent cleaning and a 30 minute deep clean every few shooting sessions
Taking people to shoot for their first time is so fun. As long as they pay attention and come at it with an open mind, by the end of the day the only downside is we're out of ammo and hungry.
Yep! I had so much fun shooting for my first time. I even got to shoot a mauser! The AR-15 I had fired earlier was nothing in comparison! The key is open-mindedness, listen to what the guys who are letting you fire their guns are saying. If you listen well and heed their advice, you'll come home without a sore shoulder.
Beutiful rifle! Love the K31's straight pull action. I never had the chance to take one for a spin at the range, but I've been very intrigued. Great video even more amazing view o.O !! Can't wait to see the rest of your adventure!
By the time the gun kicks, the bullet is already 4-6 inches out of the barrel. So it isn't being affected by the barrel anymore. Nice shooting for your first time!
Hey Lindy. Just as an FYI if you're not aware. The K31 is quite popular in America, able to nab one for $400 or so. The Swiss kept them in excellent condition so straight out of surplus they are ready to fire and very accurate. Surplus ammo is also available which is very good and consistent. That rifle should be about as good as they come, even Mauser's and 1903's aren''t quite as nice as that rifle, although the K31 was designed decades after them.
I love the humble surprise on your face you have when he says that was really really good shooting, and the "Hazzah!" was so damn endearing. So good to see that attitude in a youtuber.
Is no one going to mention that there are buildings literally right behind the target line? I'm not sure if the regulations for target ranges are different there. Though that evokes nothing but abject terror in me.
It's quite simple. There are well-defined standards for the "cone of fire" (google for the British Army's JSP403, Range Construction Guidelines, available as a free PDF online). You decide what positions you want to certify the range for and have a cone coming out of your muzzle of a specified angle (larger if you want to shoot standing since more error is assumed, smaller for prone). You then extend that cone out to the appropriate distance and anything inside the circle needs to be clear. The house is evidently outside the cone of fire. This is not surprising - target shooters are not expected to leave the target (Lloyd's first shot as a total novice was a 5 - so comfortably "on target"). One range I shoot on has fines for missing the target and marking the concrete safety wall. Only one person has hit the concrete in the last 5 years and that was a mechanical fault. It's a hell of a lot safer than a lot of (not all) US shooting (shooting off into the desert, or the idea that you need to wear high-vis when hunting to avoid shooting other people - whatever happened to positively identifying your target before firing?)
That makes sense I suppose and I see your point, I shoot competitively here in the US and am familiar with cones of fire and range safety procedures, though when it comes to building target ranges I think a redundancy when it comes to safety makes sense. I don't think it would've been too complicated to construct a range without any structures immediately behind it and considering the mountains depicted all around you wouldn't have to put much effort into constructing a burm to catch any stray rounds. Regardless of the experience of the shooters and range safety officers, accidental discharges, ricochets and the occasional blunders of an idiot are a somewhat regular hazard of the sport and I think should be to a certain extend counterbalanced in the construction of the facility. As for wearing bright orange clothing when hunting. I couldn't agree more, the hunter safety courses (at least in my area, Eastern North Carolina) are pathetic. Many people choose to pay a lump sum fee for their children's lifetime Hunting & Fishing licenses when they are very young (as it is significantly cheaper) and at that age the children are very probably uninterested in the already simplified course. After completion, there are often little to no requirements for renewal. It definitely needs work.
+R Hemmers Buddy, are you serious? "a lot safer than a lot of US shooting" I'm sorry but I'm going to be frank with you. Bullcrap. This sort of thing would never fly in the United States. "cone of fire" my ass. What about misfires? My grandfather always taught me when handling a rifle you should be aware of any and all structures within, at the very, very least, a mile away from the direction you are pointing, and have a large backstop. Every range I've been to has usually been into the side of a mountain, with certainly no buildings DIRECTLY above the range! And what are you even on about with the high-vis clothing? Target identification is the whole dang point of it, you want to make it easier on everyone. You aren't going to see whitetail deer wearing bright orange are you? I watched a video similar to this in hunter's safety course years ago. th-cam.com/video/GIgJ9D5777s/w-d-xo.html Some of the situations seem silly and obvious, however the situation at 3:12 may not be as obvious in real life as it is in this video. While totally camouflaged at a distance this hunter in the tree stand may go unobserved, even if the other hunter checks the background of his target. Wit ha single high-vis band it would become much easier.
No it doesn't. But it is even more funny if you know the background. Wankdorf is a football stadium in the near of Bern. And the team is called "Young boys". So you could say "Young boys play with balls in Wankdorf". I am not kidding! Here, follow the link: www.bscyb.ch/stadion
The official languages of Switzerland are French, German, Romansh and Italian. And 'Dorf' means village in German. Many places across Europe are called something-dorf, because it means village.
I'm wondering about those houses on the hill and if the wall that faces the range has any extra protection or bullet proof glass. Looking forward to seeing the other videos you are putting out about your trip!
I can guarantee you that no such precautions have been taken to protect the houses on the hill. Strict regulations/rules and a very responsible gun culture in Switzerland (and general absense of gun-yobs) is enough protection.
For anyone dissing freedom and other things compared to america about right to bear arms I am just going to say in switzerland there is mandatory military service. After your service are you required by law to keep your service Rifle. I don't know about you but after leaving grade school to a Free place to live and having all my needs provided for where I get trained in combat and any other number of skills whilst being paid and then after I leave I can start my life and they let me keep the rifle they gave me sounds like a pretty good deal considering you have a VERY small chance of actually being put into a war. conscription sounds like the best thing ever for someone just getting out of high school(if you live in switzerland at least).
"After your service are you required by law to keep your service Rifle." I'am swiss, i was in the swiss army and i can tell you one thing. This claim is bullshit. There is no such law. Never was. It's possible to keep the service rifle at the end of the mandatory service, yes. But there isn't any requirement to do so. Actually if you want to keep it, you have to have a firearms permit which you have to pay for to get one and you have to do a more or less symbolic payment of about 100$ to the army and they will convert the service rifle to semi auto only. The other option is to simply give it back to the army with all the other equipment which about 75% of the retiring soldiers actually do.
Cliff S Switzerland does not have a professional army. Military service is mostly training and occasionally the support of civilian institutions. Often soldiers also guard embassies. Many people, also a lot of soldiers, doubt the necessity of having an army. But until now every votation ended in favour of the army
I have spent a long time designing live fire training systems for the military and i always enjoy watching the responses to videos like this. Everyone thinks that operating a rifle is difficult but it really isn't. You should be accurate right from the start in this sort of situation. Of course you are not being stressed or distracted. The Swiss attitude to weapon use is very different to other countries too!
Don't worry Swiss people can shoot properly and they have common sense. We have on average 7 deaths per year which are caused by guns and the most people who get killed or injured by guns are criminals. We are totally fine. You should rather go and fix your crazy school shooters than judging Swiss people.
Jason Brocker We have the safest mass shootings. Like maybe 2-3 people actually die. I thought mass shootings were supposed en masse. Stricter gun control would cause a lot more problems anyways. For instance, it would lessen mass shootings but increase crime due to the fact that 2.5 million crimes a year are stopped by gun owners. The problem is a lot more complex than it appears to onlookers from other countries. Seriously, stay out of our business.
Are people in Switzerland immune to making mistakes? Putting shooting targets in front of someones house is so damn stupid, it is so easy to fire by mistake while you are pointing up, to the side, anywhere, it can happen to anyone. I am no american either.
so switzerland is basically a more mountainous michigan then? we can use rifles like that, albeit a bit shorter range, for hunting. tbh i think lack of education about anything brings fear-and only those who dont know what a gun is for or how its ethically used are afraid of them.
No switzerland is a country that has their shit together, no big racisme problems, no crazy wealth gap, and no mass shootings. But yess they do love guns, but due to their culture their happen almost no accidents. If today a mass shooting would happen in switzerland, tomorrow they would change their gun laws.
The vast vast VAST majority of gun violence comes from illegal gun ownership. If anything the United States proves that legal and responsible gun ownership is the way to go. In fact, more kill themselves/accidentally shoot themselves instead of hurting other people with guns. It comes down to how they are used and who uses them! Do not let them take your guns away because of a myth or hysterics from people who have never even seen a gun with their own eyes. Much less fired one! It's your right! And a right many have died to protect!
I hear you. This video highlight how Europeans react to guns as if they are technology from Mars. If you are familiar, you train, and you understand the ethics of responsibility- it is just a tool like a shovel.
Heimat Europa From personal expirience with the now standard issue sig 550 it is pretty much impossible to miss by that much unless extremly carless. Eg. release the seafty to early, putting a finger in the trigger before beeing on the target and ready. Im more surprised that they just let him shoot like that. Bloke must be known there and a pretty expirienced shooter otherwise they would not have let him shoot with lindy.
Efe AKMAN He must have fired different kinds of "less proper" rifles many times before because on his second try, and the first try with the sights adjusted, he misses a target by only 3.5 cm at a very far distance.
Probably not many. The fact that they don't need so much protection speaks volumes of how good the Swiss are at basic firearm safety - or how much they trust each other.
Honestly if you can get the hang of shooting an air rifle accurately switching to a firearm is easier to learn. Gun powder is more consistent than compressed air so the shots tend to be more predictable. Switzerland is a good place to learn but I grew up in Texas so it's common place here.
Look out, Frenchmen. Lloyd knows how to shoot now.
That's hilarious. I was actually thinking to myself "I bet if he imagined that target was a Frenchman, he'd hit dead center every time."

With all the equipment they have it might be a private range with some strict supervision and all that. Hell that house is probably owned by one of the guys shooting.
@@Ammothief41 Even still, I couldn't imagine finding a range like that in America. Granted, America is a lot bigger than Switzerland, but couldn't they have found a better angle or something?
The long lens made the house look closer. At that range the drop is over a meter. Would require a concerted effort to hit the house.
Would be so easy to have a negligent discharge hit those houses
You did very well for a first time shooter... well done!
You're a natural. Anyone that can consistently hit a Target at 300 meters or farther is anything but lucky. You sir, have skill. I know it when I see it. After 12 years experience handling firearms, 7 year in the US Army /combat veteran, 4 years federal law.

Glad I stumbled upon your channel.
"Anyone that can consistently hit a Target at 300 meters"
That statement is not true, it depends on target.
@@RC2225 Hey, Eidgenoss

"I'm pointing it at that guys house." - Instructor, "It's best not to." I just love the casualness.
First time I went rifle shooting It was at 800 yards and managed to hit the bulls eye with a K98, and was on target a few times too.
+Patty ...
TheOrthodoxAlbanian
Thing is that rifles tend to only be precise up to certain ranges, and K98 was actually a short carabine version of the Gewher 98 so it would have had a shorter range due to its shorter barrel it works for its main purpose which was a main infantry weapon for mostly medium range fighting, which is where a rifle without special optics or special ammo works best, to be perfectly honest I don't believe the I shot a target bull's-eye at 800 yards either, taking into account that it's effective range with ironsights clocks at around 550 yards
i won an award in boyscouts and earned my sharpshooting badge. i just bought my first gun 2 days ago. just a little 1911

K31 is beautiful.

Swiss never fight because everyone scare to go to war against them.
Also the powder leaves almost no fowelling.

is gun culture related to school schootings?
Geordie Walker I don't know why there are so many anti gun comments on a shooting video. Europeans think shootings happen in the US all the time because of what they see on TV. The average annual mass shooting death rate in the US is about 70 a year which is very small in a country of over 300 million and there are many US States that have guns but no mass shootings and you can literally count the amount of murders in the state.
Geordie Walker That's a cool vadamir linnen profile pic
Oh yeah thanks for reminding me, need to change it, it's a bit of a stale meme now.

Taking people to shoot for their first time is so fun. As long as they pay attention and come at it with an open mind, by the end of the day the only downside is we're out of ammo and hungry.

Only 7cm from bullseye at that distance - well done sir, you are a natural born sniper.
TheBanditBren well depends where the Mauser was made. An Obendorf Mauser is worth $$$. I have one myself, albeit in .22lr :)

It definitely needs work.
incoming fire and ricochets are always, random, and have the right of way.
If you have incoming fire on your shooting range you've got serious issues.
+R Hemmers Buddy, are you serious?
"a lot safer than a lot of US shooting"
I'm sorry but I'm going to be frank with you.
I watched a video similar to this in hunter's safety course years ago. th-cam.com/video/GIgJ9D5777s/w-d-xo.html
Some of the situations seem silly and obvious, however the situation at 3:12 may not be as obvious in real life as it is in this video. While totally camouflaged at a distance this hunter in the tree stand may go unobserved, even if the other hunter checks the background of his target. Wit ha single high-vis band it would become much easier.
Wankdorf is 100% more hilarious when you know 'dorf' means village.
Ahh, but does wank mean what we're all hoping it means?
No it doesn't. But it is even more funny if you know the background. Wankdorf is a football stadium in the near of Bern. And the team is called "Young boys". So you could say "Young boys play with balls in Wankdorf". I am not kidding!
Here, follow the link:

"After your service are you required by law to keep your service Rifle."
I'am swiss, i was in the swiss army and i can tell you one thing.
The other option is to simply give it back to the army with all the other equipment which about 75% of the retiring soldiers actually do.
you dont have to do service.... you can just pay 5% more taxes instead
also you neither keep your gun or any ammo
grimli16 You can keep your gun
Cliff S Switzerland does not have a professional army. Military service is mostly training and occasionally the support of civilian institutions. Often soldiers also guard embassies. Many people, also a lot of soldiers, doubt the necessity of having an army. But until now every votation ended in favour of the army
Why is there mandatory service if they're going to declare neutrality anyway
Wow I’m really American because when I saw the title I jolted back in shock
I have spent a long time designing live fire training systems for the military and i always enjoy watching the responses to videos like this.
Everyone thinks that operating a rifle is difficult but it really isn't. You should be accurate right from the start in this sort of situation.
Of course you are not being stressed or distracted.
The Swiss attitude to weapon use is very different to other countries too!
Bloody Hell they gave him a gun!!! When will they learn?!
The Nerdy Lad They had to get him out of that tank somehow, you know.
I imagine the airport customs who lost his luggage getting "I'll be back with my tank!" as Loyd left.
Some people call Americans crazy for having lots of guns, but at least we tend to not live behind the targets!
Don't worry Swiss people can shoot properly and they have common sense. We have on average 7 deaths per year which are caused by guns and the most people who get killed or injured by guns are criminals. We are totally fine. You should rather go and fix your crazy school shooters than judging Swiss people.
Only a person lacking in common sense would write a reply like that.

Lukas Schweizer nice countryside you got there 👀
Yeah, you know it's actually kinda weird, I feel uneasy if I don't see mountains on the horizon...
Lukas Schweizer that's ye olde Agoraohobia (before it was conflated with social anxiety); Unease in open spaces.
Absolutely epic and I am envious, what a phenomenal way to spend a week and in such a grand location.
so switzerland is basically a more mountainous michigan then? we can use rifles like that, albeit a bit shorter range, for hunting. tbh i think lack of education about anything brings fear-and only those who dont know what a gun is for or how its ethically used are afraid of them.
nigga wut?
No switzerland is a country that has their shit together, no big racisme problems, no crazy wealth gap, and no mass shootings.
But yess they do love guns, but due to their culture their happen almost no accidents.
If today a mass shooting would happen in switzerland, tomorrow they would change their gun laws.
Some people WANT to be slaves :c
The vast vast VAST majority of gun violence comes from illegal gun ownership. If anything the United States proves that legal and responsible gun ownership is the way to go. In fact, more kill themselves/accidentally shoot themselves instead of hurting other people with guns. It comes down to how they are used and who uses them! Do not let them take your guns away because of a myth or hysterics from people who have never even seen a gun with their own eyes. Much less fired one! It's your right! And a right many have died to protect!
I hear you. This video highlight how Europeans react to guns as if they are technology from Mars. If you are familiar, you train, and you understand the ethics of responsibility- it is just a tool like a shovel.
wankdorf almost killed me ... jeezus
*Tirian Lanister liked this joke*
The target system is pretty awesome. The house directly behind and above the targets not so much.
GeoFry3 yes a mix of genius and stupidity, Switzerland in a nutshell.
Well done Mate, a pleasure to watch!
Has medieval arsenal in garage, never fired a rifle
Efe AKMAN He must have fired different kinds of "less proper" rifles many times before because on his second try, and the first try with the sights adjusted, he misses a target by only 3.5 cm at a very far distance.
Also he's using some amazing wights from a bench rest position
well most guns arent medieval...
Britain. *shrugs*
"Right now I'm aiming at a guy's house ..." - Imagine how many windows were broken like that ...
Probably not many. The fact that they don't need so much protection speaks volumes of how good the Swiss are at basic firearm safety - or how much they trust each other.
@@buckplug2423 And if they hit the house the house owner will come along and yodel them to death
Honestly if you can get the hang of shooting an air rifle accurately switching to a firearm is easier to learn.
Gun powder is more consistent than compressed air so the shots tend to be more predictable.
Switzerland is a good place to learn but I grew up in Texas so it's common place here.
The way he said "It saves on ink" with the beautiful birdsong in the background makes me feel very at peace
