Have you been keeping track or is there a website you check? I ask because I have my own list of games that I tediously update the lowest price on when I see it change. My main problem with steam is that they don't sell any games. Everything is just a license and they even state in the EULA that they will take away your license if they feel like it any time... That's such a dick move and the reason why I stay away from them!
Yeah I hear you. Thats why I prefer physical over digital. Most consoles I believe do the same kind of thing with digital games sold through them I believe. The problem is that not all devs can do physical so digital is welcome in that sense. But definetly there are major problems with how things are. And it will continue to be like that until countries regulate digital ownership of goods

Outside of their subscription services (NSO & PSN) Sony and Nintendo at least still sell a digital copy of the game to you. But ultimately there has to be some long term solutions for digital distribution. Either by law or by industry standards or by "popular demand" (aka make everything shareware). Let's see what the future brings. But the "as a service" model with paying money for others to dictate what the gamers have to play is the least favourable option....
