    Excellent video. I like the idea of the thinner wire vs the rope I've seen in other videos.

    I use a nylon rope about the same size as the wire, but I use one a little longer so it overlaps at the bottom in the center, then no hook tool is needed. Also I have found it a lot easier and more effective to run a flat bead of bedding compound on the pinchweld before setting the glass in place, then pulling the rope to install the glass. ...yes this pulls some compound to the interior but cleans off easily if you take your time.....I have not had a single problem with leaks this way, and the chrome doesn't get stuck down with anything but the clips.

      Ive seen strip caulking put in the weather strip before the rope, is this what you mean?

    • @williamrhinehardt8321
      @williamrhinehardt8321 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it is called bedding compound, I believe it is made by 3M...it never hardens completely, but it is applied with a caulking gun. I assume you are talking about butyl tape that comes on a roll...I've never tried using it in a gasket application.

      A bit late to the party on this one. I agree that using a nylon rope around the gasketed glass and only looping top and bottom centre almost negates the need for a hook tool. Lipping a few inches of the gasket top and bottom, will hold the glass well enough to ensure I have the glass central in the aperture, then pulling each rope ALWAYS toward the centre of the glass, means no chance of the rubber tearing. For both string-in/hitch-in (locking strip), Swarfega is amazing for ensuring the process goes smoothly, and cleans up nice. Here in the UK, we use Arbomast sealing compound BEFORE fitting the glass. A lexan scraper and glass cleaner will remove the excess.

    3M make a nice sealant that can be used in a cartridge gun. A local 3M sales store that sells body shop supplies can set you up with the correct type.

    I know I'm late to the party, but dang you made that look easy! I'm guessing you peel back the outer edge of the gasket and caulk/seal it that way? Can one tube cover front and rear windows?

    Im late to the show by a few years but i am about to reinstall my windshield on my 66 mustang. What about rope caulk in the weatherstrip before you put the weatherstrip on the glass????

      I’ve got to do my 66 as well. I’m planning on putting in the strip butyl then the wire and the install as shown in the video and then the sealant.

    What do you recommend for sealer ?

  • @simoncallaghan353
    @simoncallaghan353 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t understand why you leave your wire short, I always cross them in the middle so you just jump in and start pulling the wire and the bottom is in, in about 10 seconds.

    How about the sealer. I've installed several windshields in early mustangs and if you don't put sealer in the rubber gasket before putting it on the windshield it will leak.

  • @richardgrissinger4708

    Great video Chris. I just did my 64 Comet, except I listened to the advice of another individual and put caulking (non hardening) on the outside of the rubber after installing the rope. It was messy and started to set up more quickly than was expected. I put a urethane sealer between glass and gasket. Problem was...when I started installing the trim in the grooves (Comets are different than Mustangs here), the extra adhesive inside the glass would not allow the rubber to twist enough to insert it (trim). Should I have NOT put sealant on the gasket before installing?

    Dude Very nice video...Quick and to the point...No narrating needed! Just kinda curious why you didnt go rope all the way around....Could it be because after your done hooking the bottom.. you get out and its easier to shift/final adjustment
    side to side???And the bottom is already bottomed out because no rope in the way? ORRR.. did you run out of rope that day? lol..Im sure there is a reason...Thanks for the cool video

    Hi Chris I have a question. I've only had my 66 mustang for about a month and next time I change the oil do I need to add a zinc additive to the oil? It is a old stock 289 that still has the original flat tappets in it. Also do I need to add zinc in the gas to protect the valve seats? Thanks

    • @MustangRestorationsInc
      @MustangRestorationsInc  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the car gets used for summer driving. Use Valvoline 20w/50 racing oil. It wont get as thin in hot weather and has a high Zinc content for older push rod engines.

    Hey Chris, so I am starting with the BACK window first (practice...LOL) and NO way does that gasket slip on the gasket as easy as you make it seem. Any tricks? Did you heat the rubber first ?

    • @MustangRestorationsInc
      @MustangRestorationsInc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No real tricks. It does get stretched around the glass though.

  • @chanraxter2015
    @chanraxter2015 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So you don't need any sealer and the rubber gasket alone seals it?

    • @MustangRestorationsInc
      @MustangRestorationsInc  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chan Raxter..... At the end of the video it says that it is now "Ready for sealant"

    • @ChrisThomas-tz8jr
      @ChrisThomas-tz8jr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would it be easier to install the sealant after the wire is placed around the weatherstripping?

    • @MustangRestorationsInc
      @MustangRestorationsInc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At this point the application of sealer can be made..

      +Perkins Diesel . The Fox Mustang glass is glued in place.

    • @jaydaug2008

  • @88usa88
    @88usa88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    just so the viewers know, dont waste you time going around the inside pushing in the weatherstripping like he shows in the video. there is soooo much pressure already exerted on that it by the time its seated that you wont be making any lasting change by trying to push it in.

    • @MustangRestorationsInc
      @MustangRestorationsInc  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Agent_47 That makes no sense at all

    • @88usa88
      @88usa88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it actually does though. have you never gotten a wrinkle in the gasket and tried to push on it only to have it do nothing but sit there stubbornly? Once you pull out the rope there is an enormous amount of pressure on this glass and gasket and pushing it with your fingers does not resolve any malformations. You are quite lucky you lined it up so perfectly if you didnt have to reinstall it. Just telling you what i know from first hand experience with my own mustangs.

    • @MustangRestorationsInc
      @MustangRestorationsInc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude! what he is doing at the very end is locking it in even more......please just stop commenting. This was a textbook install! And he did it flawlessly. If he didnt do what he did at the end it would have a better chance of flying out after a hard jarring impact.
