I grew up during the 50s and went to high school in the 60s. I honestly don't remember the duck & cover drills, but that might have had something to do with living around 50 miles from NYC. We would have been toast. I don't think I would have wanted to survive something like that, to tell the truth.
We didn’t do it either. Probably because I grew up in Bellevue Ne a few miles from the “hole” where the SAC officials would be, thus making us part of a prime first strike target.
I also lived as child through the 50ed. I clearly remember the duck and cover drills, many time for years. My dad was in the army reserve working on survival of the bomb. He was very honest with us kids. We were in the zone of all will die within a few hours afterward. We had no plans to prepare to survive. I remember walking around Los Angeles when I was a kid, and they had signs posted where you could shelter in case of an attack. And those duck and cover drills in school.
The good old simpler days when hiding was a viable option. Lol . Imagine anyone's grandparents back then in their 20s thrust into today's world. They would go absolutely insane. I guess when my kids are grown and have kids of their own I probably will as well.
