The weird part is snagging it in the mouth. I snagged a dead trout in a warm nasty pond a couple years ago. The worst part was I snagged it in the gut and it just made the place stink even more.

It’s possible to snag a dead fish in the mouth. This exact thing actually happened to me a couple years ago… was fishing a dirty little park pond on a trip visiting family in AZ and thought I hooked something big but it wasn’t even fighting. When I brought it in it was a half-rotted 5lb+ Channel cat with my jig hooked right in the top of its mouth…suffice it to say I was just as confused as you were…but I guess when fish die they usually have their mouths wide open and it’s possible to snag a bait in it, especially with fish that have big mouths like catfish

My theory is that he hit the lure and that a bigger fish choked him and he suffocated in that bigger fish’s mouth as you got snagged. That fish is dead but he wasn’t dead that long.

I never understood why people who throw with left hand retrieved with left hand. It’s so much more efficient imo when I use right hand to cast and retrieve with left hand instead of switching hands.

I caught a dead fish at a paylake. About 20# I was trolling my bait back in the floater went under. I set the hook and yelled at my brother to bring the net(he was asleep at the time) He dipped it out and looked at it. I can't believe you woke me up to net a dead fish, was the next words out his mouth. I still laugh about it.. lol
Mike the line should go from the reel to the eyes of the rod with out wrapping around the blank...really works much better.

I've seen a relative catch a rotting fish in the mouth setting, but my guess is that with the current and fish being snagged. The fish was getting pulled down river making the head face towards the dam and you manage to hook it in the mouth.
