    Great video full of inspirational views. My RTT arrives in about 2 weeks and I can't wait to get out on some dispersed camping adventures in California and beyond. Mine is going on my 2019 Tacoma, but I also own a 2008 V6 4X4 Rav4 that you have inspired me to lift. Following you guys now and will be keeping tabs on your adventures. Will have to pick up one of those Skottles and a fridge now too.

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know... its expensive for sure. We are hoping it will last us 5+ years, and given we have spent almost 40 nights in it in our first year of ownership it seems to be worth it! Our rationale was that we will stay in fewer hotels on road trips, and save money on that at least.

    • @GKO33
      @GKO33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LunarLanderXplor Absolutely, it totally makes sense. I'm sure I'll end up getting one eventually - I've only had my Rav a month and now thinking about some ATs and the RNO springs/lift, so I'll take it one expense at a time haha. Definitely gonna check out that Williams Hill BLM land though, looks like an awesome find and not far.

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AT's and lift definitely make a difference! We are still on the stock tires/wheels that came with the TRD. They are pretty good, but we will upgrade later this year. Yea, Williams Hill BLM is pretty cool! Easy dirt road to get through the area, with a few good dispersed campsites. One thing to note is people like to do target shooting out there (which is fun if you are into it, or possibly annoying if you are not into it). Are you in the area? We are from Oakland.

    • @GKO33
      @GKO33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LunarLanderXplor Ah yeah, unfortunately I'm in an XLE so the stock tires aren't so great - They can handle lighter stuff, but wouldn't want to risk anything dicey. I'm down in LA! But Williams Hill doesn't seem like a bad drive at all. Heading south to Cleveland NF this weekend might check it out in a few weeks!

      Congrats on the Bronco, they look awesome. We've definitely taken our RAV4 places it was not intended to go, but it has done well.
      Frontrunner makes racks specific to each vehicle. If there is not one for the bronco, they may have grab-on parts to mount onto existing side rails. You can definitely email them & ask what will work.

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We use a Dometic PLB40 battery, with a 150w solar panel. The battery plugs into the back of the vehicle, so it charges up when we drive. When we are not driving, the fridge can run for 2 days on battery alone, or pretty much indefinitely with solar.

  • @DiamondD777
    @DiamondD777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you using the included ikamper brackets on your front runner rack? I like how low it’s sitting on the platform (compared to lifted up high when using the quick release brackets) but I haven’t seen definitive info on whether the ikamper brackets will fit around front runner bars and whether the outside “lip” of the platform interferes with the mounting. Thanks for any info!

    • @LunarLanderXplor

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The iKamper is about 13" tall so in theory it should fit. However, it also depends on if your crossbars or roof rack add any height. Also if you add bigger tires, a lift, or stiffer coils you will increase your height as well.

    • @LunarLanderXplor

      Thanks for watching! When we got the Dendoff coils, there was only one stiffness available, so not 100% sure, though pretty sure they are the stiffer option. For tires, we have Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 245/70/17. They did all the upgrades with the tent still installed. We've actually never removed the tent in over 3 years of having it installed lol.

    Picking up a 21 RAV4 TRD off-road to camp and bike in the Canadian rockies - what would you say I need to do first? How does the lift affect performance and handling on the road? Love your vid. Cheers!

      Ps How many inches is the lift? Thx

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The lift is a 2.5" spacer lift + some stiffer coils in the rear. Total we gained about 3" because we were losing most of our ground clearance in the rear due to our rooftop tent & gear weighing down the rear end.
      In terms of what to do first, I would say take the stock RAV4 out on the trails & see what you need first! It really depends on what kind of off-roading & camping you do. For Dijana and I, we were mostly focused on doing easy off road trails to find secluded campsites, so we did the roof rack & roof top tent first. After almost a year with stock suspension we decided the lift was needed next. We are still on the stock TRD wheels / tires, but planning on upgrading to a new set up soon.
      Cheers!

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and the lift has not changed the performance / handling very much at all. Slightly stiffer ride due to the stiffer springs we had installed, but overall it has been worth it to have increased clearance for the trails.

    Cool Rav, but what is the difference between overlanding and car camping? Or are they the same and it just recently got rebranded?

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Car camping is typically driving to a camp site, pitching a tent, and sleeping there for a few nights. Overlanding typically involves vehicle-based exploration, usually moving from one spot to another every night. Overlanding vehicles can usually handle more long distance travel, and are designed for more self-sufficiency. For example, we have more first aid supplies, emergency gear, satellite comms, water, and solar power than the typical car camper vehicle. This particular trip (in this video) was not really an overland style trip since we just camped in one spot, but we still use our overlanding gear since that is how our set up was designed. Our other trip videos (see our Utah Overland series) are a better example of overlanding.

    I have been trying to find out how much the roof of the RAV4 can hold. Message boards say up to 500 or so lbs when at rest. Toyota dealers don’t seem to know the answer and just say the max is 176lbs per the owners manual, regardless of driving or at rest. Do you have any info or verbiage on this that says otherwise?

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not 100% sure, though we have had our rooftop tent for a few years now and it has been wonderful. No issues, though we do have a FrontRunner rack that it is mounted to, that is capable of holding 600+ lbs. The roof itself does not seem to have any issues with the weight of the tent & us two people in it. The 176lbs is definitely at rest, as there are a ton of RAV4 owners with rooftop tents and no one has had any issues that I am aware of (even on stock crossbars, though I would recommend aftermarket platform rack instead)

  • @MartyMeyerdierks
    @MartyMeyerdierks 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I thought 5th gen RAV4 roof rack weight limit is 165lbs. How are you able to install ~150lbs rooftop tent plus the weight of two people sleeping in it without issue? Is weight rating on your RAV4 model much higher?

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That weight limit is the dynamic limit, meaning what the car is rated to hold on the roof while driving. The static weight limit, which is what the car is rated to hold on the roof while parked, is much higher. No issues with the rooftop tent & 2 people on top of the car.

      We are currently on the 18" wheels that came with the TRD RAV4 (not 19"). The TRD also came with AT tires which have been pretty good for the past year. We are going to upgrade to larger tires and smaller wheels soon, but the stock TRD set up has been great so far.
