    I hope this helps you decide if Super Vision is right for you! You can use lightfast pigments to get exact matches for the pan set, but only *somewhat close matches* to the tube colors. Pigments will not look the same as the way dyes look and behave (dye suspends and travels in water differently than pigments, and often pigments have a softer, less vibrant appearance). Dye will more eagerly separate away from the heavier particle pigments. Despite the downsides, they are beautiful products, ideal for print reproduction/sketchbooks/personal work.
    Want a second opinion? Shout out to Alice Lim for sharing her LF testing and experience with these watercolors in her video - th-cam.com/video/wUlexfHFH14/w-d-xo.html
    If you already own some granulating watercolors and just want to replicate Super Vision's colors very closely, without caring about lightfastness, the dye based liquid watercolors called Ecoline I used in the video are at Jackson's here - www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/talens-ecoline-liquid-watercolour-ink?___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0
    See description under video for other links and info. Happy painting everyone :)

    I wish I had more thumbs to give. Your ability to fire off ultra concise, fact-based findings with artists' needs in mind before shifting to tranquil swatching and painting is terrific. Never thought of combining watercolors and dyes, so you've also given me a whole new adventure looking for teal cats in my own ink bottles.

    Excellent review! I had wanted these paints but the price of an unknown brand put me off. I'm glad I held off and now I have no interest. That's crazy how the red disappeared! I would not be able to use up a tube before it faded. I've never seen that before. Thanks for taking one for the team!

    I put together a granulating palette a while back and it was a great investment. Not only can I create a supergranulating color on a whim, to whatever specification I wish (including a ton of beautiful shades no manufacturer is offering), but I can add any non granulating color out of whatever other palette I'm working with for separating mixes with the same freedom. You really don't have to have that many colors either.. there are a handful of super flexible granulators that can do so much, and many are very similar in shade so just pick one (such as the turquoises or browns.. definitely grab a warm and cool brown) and you would never know the difference in a mix. Must haves are the mars brown and black, potters pink, buff titanium, a turquoise, and french ultramarine... with just those six and a basic split primary palette your options are huge. My personal granulating palette is 20 pans (including a few granulating convenience mixtures I already owned that I stuck in there) and I never want for anything.. I've yet to come across a mixture I can't do... and since I did my homework I KNOW every single thing I put on paper is lightfast. Priceless.

    I'm not particularly attached to lightfastness in general, as long as I have a reasonable idea of what to expect of a pigment or paint. I don't even mind paints that change in the pan (like malachite might), but the completely disappearing red in the closed tube is a bit much even for me 😂

    I have a tube of rose ash colour and I just realised the same thing about it. I'm super shocked and furious, it's not so cheap! And even more, why it is spoiled in the tube but old swatches and works are ok? I had suspicion that red colour can be from dye since they doesn't specify the pigment but I had no idea they made it from the insects. I have some basic ecoline colours so I'm definitely going to try to make something interesting with them.

      P.s. for a mid ground between lightfast quin tube pigment and non-lf ecoline dye… I tried ph martens hydrus and also schmincke aqua drop which are both pigment based, have decent lightfastness and separate from b36 as they run ‘thinner/faster’ than tube paint. Worked pretty well. Hydrus also boast of being 25-50% more brilliant than tube paint (I.e. another dye-like property)

I was astonished by rose ash and only long shipping time stopped me from ordering it, although I decided to try mixing it myself with a tube of White Nights cobalt azure blue p.b.36 and some p.v.19 from Cotman purple lake. It doesn't look as good as I think it would be, but after watching your video I know that it would be fine with another pink color. I surely would try to get a granulating palette which you advised since it's definitely more useful than just a set of pre-mixed tubes with beautiful, yet fast-fading colors.
    They got a set with another beautiful colors that looks like a marble with inclusion of glitter dust, it called Rock-Mica Layered set. I also wanted it, but it seems that they could also be recreated like previous ones with some watercolors like iridiscent series from Van Gogh/Daniel Smith or just really small glitter powder.

    I have some vintage cochineal (carmine) dye and when I did a lightfast test it disappeared within about a week! While it is a very beautiful colour, it is also the most fugitive one I’ve ever seen! It is crazy how it is still used in modern times even though there are so many better and more stable red colours out there. For something to fade inside a dark tube - it can’t be good. 😂

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that is a quick fade time!!! Yeah I'm a bit surprised about its continued use, but I think it's readily available because of food and make up industry. Probably a really cheap supply to get, considering Carmine is found in a lot of candies and lipstick for the red coloring.

    Just checked my tubes of Red Blue and Rose Ash and yep, both discolored and became green/blue. So dissapointing since they weren't even cheap. Last time I bought anything Super Vision.

    Queen Ann’s Lace is my absolute favorite flower. They grow all over coastal NC. I really appreciate the dye tip! Would this also work with liquid watercolor? Thank you!

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will work to some degree with pigment based liquid watercolors, depending on how finely they have been ground (typically pigment based particles are still big enough that there is sediment that needs to be shaken in the bottle, like schmincke Aqua Drop or Hydrus). So the much finer particles of dye based liquid watercolors (ecoline, radiant) which don't need to be shaken since the dye stays suspended will much more eagerly separate from pigments in wet washes.

    What a great recommendation from youtube! I am a subscriber but the last year I had unusually small interest in watercolors & art, so I sadly missed this video.
    I had looked at these for a while now, they're still in my basket, but for the price and with the non-existent lightfastness I gotta give them a pass.
    Especially since you just said how to mix similar products

    Hello Kimberly, you were brought to my attention by Lindsay of the frugal crafter. I know that this is a older video and I don't have any of the Supervision paints. The brands of watercolors I have bought (based on my minimal budget) are the prima watercolor confections woodlands, Koi watercolors and the Masters touch pan paints sold at hobby lobby. Do you know of anyone or anywhere that I can find out the pigment information for these paints so I can see if I have any that I could use to make my own granulating watercolors until I can afford to buy better quality paint brands? I hope that this makes sense to you and it's not too much of a bother. Any info would be appreciated. I plan on checking out more of your videos when I get the chance. Take care and God bless. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas

      Sometimes the color charts for super vision are shown in the seller listings on ali express. However, you'd be much better off buying a primary mixing set and a handful of granulating colors including ultramarine blue and cobalt teal to mix with any of your standard smooth non-granulating colors to create color separating mixtures. DaVinci watercolors on Blick's website is a great way to go. Roman Szmal is also really nice and you could get a handful of superb pro grade paints (Jackson's online). Overall unless you're painting huge pieces that are using up a lot of paint, purchasing just a few colors of a pro grade would give you the best results at a low investment price. SuperVision is not cheap enough to warrant avoiding spending a similar or slightly higher price on a better brand. Rosa Gallery sets on amazon are also cheaper and much better quality, look for ultramarine blue and cobalt teal in the color charts some pan sets have them - they separate in any mixture. Hope that helps!

    i havent painted with watercolors yet, do i need to do anything special to make a colormix "seperate" into 2 colors when painting? like using mass and undertone? or does it happen naturally with some mixes? @KimberlyCrick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely good if you know beforehand, unfortunately over a year ago there was not enough information out there about these to know just how fugitive they'd be ahead of time. There are some dyes like indigo and rose madder that are surprisingly durable and storage stable. These are absolutely pretty paints though and I will totally get some use out of them for personal projects. Happy painting :)

    Have you tried Mairtini yet? Their effects r same as SuperVision with different colors. But not sure they’re better than SuperVision or not. Please try n compare them 🥺 Thank u

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are not the same as Super Vision, the Mairtini colors are not as vibrant in person - they used pigments not dyes like Super Vision does. Mairtini's new color separating ones look very much like Daniel Smith or Paul Rubens (like moonglow royal purple/shadow/moonlight). You can mix them easily with their single pigments. Sadly all of their photos seem too highly contrasted. I'll probably do a DIY video in the future for their mixtures. They will be more stable than SuperVision, but they used PR177 like Moonglow so that will fade if lightfastness is important to you.

    Hi Kimberly, I am brand new to art, especially using paints. Is there a way to bring back old paints that have been sitting around waiting for me to use any of them. I got overly excited and purchased a lot of watercolor paints. Stupid, I know. I heard somebody say trying “mineral spirits? and glycerin? If so, how do I do this? Thank you and I love your channel. I just found you and you are amazing!! Thanks

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you have watercolor in tubes that are dried out? You should be able to just cut open the tube with scissors and pour the paint into a dish or empty pan. If you add a tiny bit of water (I'd use a bottle of aquafina/purified water, just to make sure you're not adding any mold from the tap) a few drops at a time and let it soak a few minutes you may be able to reform it into a clump to use with a wet brush. Adding a drop of glycerin per pan as you re-stir the paint with water is only if you're having a hard time re-wetting the old paint. Most good brands can be in storage for over 20 years and still re-wet well, so how difficult this may be will depend on how good the brand you have in storage is. Mineral spirits is only to break down oil based paints. If you have acrylic or oil paints I wouldn't bother trying to rescue it. Watercolor and gouache should always stay usable even if it's dry. Hope that helps :)

    • @KimberlyCrick

      lol they keep giving a lot of different answers to people as excuses... Several of us who do reviews emptied out our entire tubes into pans trying to find the red dye, it's completely gone. They know it's a problem and apparently told other artists that they "improved the formula" in recent batches and we could return ours if we had problems (but no offer to refund or replace if you're unable to return it after finding out there's a problem months and months later or it costs too much to ship back internationally). Sigh!

    I very much like their Red Orange paint but even the pigment there PR3 is very fugitive, I think. I see you did pigment + ink mixture but do you think it is possible to replicate it with just pigments, no inks?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not possible to make exact replicas with pigment based watercolors instead of dye based inks (dye flows quicker in water and also is more vibrant than a pigment option). The dye inks will cause more actively separating multi-color effects. However, that doesn't mean you can't make similar looking mixtures that might be "close enough" and beautiful in their own right. Happy painting :)
