May I say something from the point of view of someone older without sounding like I lived in a strict environment and therefore clueless about the needs of today's kids? Obviously not, so here goes. Riverdale of the early comics, to me, represented real schools and real teenagers. I myself grew up in the 70s and 80s, watching Archie cartoons and reading the comics and actually enjoying them and knew by way of intuition that Archie and his gang represented. Period. Laugh now but the Archie of TV was corny, yeah, but he was very grounded in good values and did his best to live by them. Even when he went thru his crushes with Betty and Veronica, he wasn't licentious about it, like some teen male stereotype in American Pie, the type portrayed by the actor playing Archie on CW, KJ Apa. He was true to himself. Always. Archie on CW is a good man, true, but his character is rife with teen stereotypes, like getting laid by a rapacious teacher, Mrs Grundy of all people, who here has the looks of a milf porn star, and in truth was using "Mrs Grundy" as a false ID. The studio felt that using a 70 something actress for the part was not lucrative so a 40 something hooker type felt better to the CW. CW Archie comes off as the usual high schooler in films we keep seeing portrayed as following the dictates of his penis, instead of his common sense. To say "all men are like that" is inexcusable, and only a female will make this claim. It's not chauvinist, it's simply a truth you cannot accept yet but don't worry, reality is stronger. Jughead is seen on CW as Uber bright and reclusive and living on the fringe, seeing reality thru murky lenses. Anything CW will do to "reach kids of today" (Ching Ching) so they ruin the character of the character with no thought of the consequences. Jughead was quirky, fun loving, and nervous, and somewhat lesser on the IQ test than the reincarnation of Hunter Thompson you see as "the real Jughead" on the CW. Betty and Veronica are female stereotypes no different from those in 90210 from the 90s, or anything Nickelodeon would crank out in that same period. Josie and the Pussycats come off as all-black and thus all black stereotypes, freely ripped off from videos of En Vogue, Destiny's Child or Salt n Pepa with claims of representing strong black women which other black fans can see right thru as the lies they are. Josie of the past was more racially homogenized, more compassionate with kid fans, and thus more real than the all black version you see on CW. If this insults your intelligence, let's move on. Riverdale on CW as a whole says the exact same lie that MTV uses for its own hit shows, that they're reaching teenagers with real issues. Bullshit. The CW sees the teen audience as a target demographic, not as people with real issues or real struggles. (Please do not use "so did the early cartoons" as your excuse since this is insulting.) For the record the cast are remarkable actors, but they are working with scripts written by teams of writers dependent on clichés as old as the world's "oldest profession", and strung out on cocaine to get some inspiration for the next episode. Because of this Riverdale is stuck in the exact same cesspool of "realism" that had My So Called Life cancelled after one season and somehow had Claire Danes become a star in Homeland. It is never now, nor ever was, a portrayal of real teen problems, it's the indirect cause of more teen problems. Do I sound like I'm not living in reality? That I'm boorish and prudish. Sure, I got it, but I'm also a prude who speaks from my heart. I care about kids, and once got kicked out of church for standing up for children when the Bible teacher announced to his class that "children are wet cement", a false claim now used by CW as well. Camila Mendes is definitely brilliant in portraying Veronica Lodge on Riverdale. Her flare for ambition, style, and grace is evident in her overall persona reminds me a lot like me.. Finally, as bizarrre the story lines are, the show is well written and the cast are phenominal in their own right. Everyone just fits.
I still find it jarring to my childhood to reconcile that show with my old Archie comics.... The most we saw in those was a strategic bubble laden shower panel, or a beach sequence with some iffy sideboob. The full monty? Yeesh!

I've just let go and allowed Riverdale to be my favourite guilty pleasure campy & crazy cw show lol. At least it's creators acknowledge the crazy and lean in to it, fans seem to think they're oblivious to it which is dumb lol. But I get what you mean, last season was crazy. I think what came through for me is that the season finale actually tied all of the crazy with a nice bow, all the storylines come together! SO I recommend just finishing.
