    Three months ago, we planted Red La Soda potatoes, Superior White potatoes, and Adirondack Blue potatoes, in our greenstalk stackable gardening system, and now we are finally able to harvest them and see how growing potatoes in a vertical garden had gone.
    We are very pleased with our greenstalk planter, and this harvest did not disappoint. It was our first time growing these potato varieties, and we really wanted to see how well they would do in the green stalk.
    As we suspected, some varieties performed better than others, and some tiers performed better than others, but like our friend Geeky Gardens' results, we were pleased by the results.
    We hope you enjoy this vertical garden harvest and are inspired to try out your own GreenStalk vertical garden using the GreenStalk garden coupon link in the description.
    Thanks for watching.

      Our pleasure! We have several more we are going to be growing with indoors this winter. They are worth the investment, in our opinion.

    Cool! I harvested a handful of small potatoes yesterday. I also picked up a set of those stacking pots from Aldi the day before and am going to plant a bunch of red potatoes in them tomorrow! I love purple potatoes.

    That is a NICE harvest my friend! And lots of good information as well!
    I think I will be doing a lot of my fall/winter growing in my GreenStalks this year as well, mainly because my spring peppers just don't want to give up the raised beds!

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much, and, of course, thank you for the inspiration. We will also be growing a good bit in ours over the winter (indoors in our case) as well. Lots of options for planting. Those peppers are so important too, and I completely understand wanting to let them continue growing where they are. Have a great rest of your weekend!

    You can add more pearlite to your mix to lighten the weight of the soil.
    That will put less stress on the Greenstein and on your back when you harvest.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great suggestion Johnn, and that is exactly what we did when we set up our GreenStalk for our indoor garden this year.

    Did the bottom tiers get less sun? Maybe the canopy of the top layers, blocked the bottom layers access to sun exposure?

    Might as well have grown them in a 5 gallon bucket because all of those seem really root bound and a really low yield.
    He seems really impressed with just a few potatoes so I assume he has never grown them with more space to let them really spread out.

  • @reneebrown2968

    Impressive yield. I’m currently growing beets, purple carrots, radishes, leeks, cauliflower and broccoli in mine from seed. Did ok with the bush beans during the hot weather here in zone 8a Virginia Beach, VA. Was able to freeze some for later in the year. I have sweet potatoes in a grow bag that is going crazy. Will be harvesting those soon. Can’t wait to see how many we have. Keep up the good work with the Greenstalk. I got mine earlier this year. Really starting to get used to it and might get another one next year.
    Update: 9/20/21 - Have ordered the Leaf version in Luscious Green and it will be here Wednesday (9/22/21). Discussed with hubby and he saw that it was on sale because the color is being discontinued. He liked that and I ordered. Now we are figuring out what to plant in it for fall/winter.

      With all those pockets, there is just so much possible to grow in one GreenStalk. I love your varieties. Our sweet potatoes are also coming along nicely, and harvest season is just about upon us, so I wish you very well with your harvests coming up, and adding a second GreenStalk sounds like a fantastic idea to us. :)

      Yes! Potatoes come in a variety of colors. It is always fun to serve up different color potato dishes. You should try some purple mashed potatoes.

    Thanks for sharing! I’ve been curious about trying potatoes in the GS next year. Has the stretching to your pots been permanent? I don’t want to damage my beloved tower.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! No the stretch is not permanent. We are currently growing more potatoes in the same greeenstalk planter this year. Stay tuned for the harvest results!

    Did the distortion to the watering trays between the tiers affect the evenness of watering? Or did they get back in shape? I just bought 2 originals and 2 leaf so I can mix and match. I want to try potatoes on the lower tiers, but I don’t want to break or deform my new greenstalks.

    We have done a lot of container gardening with potatoes and have found that the white potatoes don't produce as well as the red potatoes.

  • @barbaradumler6503

    How did you plant the potatoes. Did you put them in the bottom and add soil as they poked through the soil or did you plant them deep and just filled up the pocket?? I want to try next season. My potatoes don't get real big and I have only tried in pots (from Costco), and I started on the bottom and just kept covering them up until I got to the top. Your potatoes looked great. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanking you in advance. A new subscriber.

      Hello Barbara, Welcome! Here is the video that gives the detailed step by step procedure that we used to plant potatoes in the green stalk vertical planter: th-cam.com/video/eLNr6eU8j2U/w-d-xo.html. We definitely plan to keep growing potatoes vertically and hope to optimize our production. Please let us know if you have additional questions. We plan to plant the potatoes much deeper next time, so please stay tuned for future improvements.

    Nice !!! Could we grow sweet potatoes in the GreenStalk ? Is it deep enough?

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have talked about experimenting with that exact question. I think the original version (the 5 tier) might just have enough depth, but I am not 100% sure since we usually try to have about 18-20 inches of depth for our sweet potatoes and those are only 10. But, I think it might be worth trying out, and we might do just that. :)

    What was the beginning weight of the potatoes?

  • @mancavegamingandgardening9901
    @mancavegamingandgardening9901 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My goodness your Adirondacks got huge! I tried grow bags for the first time this year and mice destroyed my hopes and dreams. Is that greenstalk permanently deformed after the potato growth?

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much! We were so pleased by the results from those potatoes. We will see if the others that we planted in our black plastic containers do well. Voles and mice are such a nuisance here as well. I am hopeful we didn't lose much in the way of potatoes to them. We trapped a bunch of them, but it seems like there are an infinite number to struggle against. As to the GreenStalk, no everything looks great now. When we reassembled it with our fall crop, it went back together perfectly and there are no issues with the watering system. :)

      Try putting tulle lace fabric underneath and around your pots and plants. It’s very inexpensive and you can buy it on Amazon. Animals with claws don’t like getting their claws snagged in it. It works for me.
