How to replace the Output Shaft Seal on a T10 Transmission

I recently developed a leak at the output shaft seal on my Borg Warner T10, side-loader, 4-speed transmission. This is an incredibly easy seal to replace as you basically only need a 1/2" wrench, screw driver, and a hammer. Jacking up the rear of the car to make all the transmission fluid move forward in the Trans also helps with the mess, or lack of a mess. I had a little difficulty finding the seal I need, but in the end I think the one I found will work great!
Seal used: O'Reillys Auto Parts, # 7692S, with a 2.375" OD and 1.43" ID (even though it says 1.5" ID in specs).
The car is a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a factory V8 and 4 speed transmission.

Last time I did the seal, while I was at the auto parts store, I rented (for free, tool loan program) a seal driver kit and verified it had a driver that fit the new seal/boot. Free tool loan programs are great! Nice tutorial... thanks!

Ha, Alex would have been the guy I'd lean on to ask about replacing that bushing if needed. I recently had the tail-shaft housing off my T5 and the bushing was fine, otherwise I would have replaced it and probably did a video about it. :)

Did the new seal stop the leak? My t5 is leaking and from what I have read, the bushing on the inside needs to be replaced also. By the way, I just heard you as a guest on the Ford Mustang The First Generation, The Early Years podcast and realized I was already watching your videos.

Yes, replacing that seal should stop the leak. The bushing inside is not likely to play a role on your leaking problem, unless it was completely missing, then it's a separate issue.

Did you not find it necessary to put some rtv silicone goop on the metal mating surface of the seal where it taps into the trans?

You could do that, but I did not have a leak after the new seal was installed. :)

For what it’s worth… I took a chance and did not change the bushing. Leak was not fixed. Driveline vibration (in my case a loose transmission crossmember mount destroyed the bushing and caused it to gush even with a new seal. Pretty easy to pull the extension housing and fix it correctly.

That Output Shaft Seal was 7692S, purchased from O'reilly's Auto Parts. I'm sure that part number is transferable to other auto part stores. :)

Good video but you really need to replace the bushing with the seal because if the seal is bad, so is the bushing
