Excellent match. Sampras groundgame on grass, which he rarely had opportunities to show, was awesome. Beautiful variety, cutting backhand slices, mixed with topspin backhands and sharp penetrating forehands. Sampras moved with cat-like effortlessnes. Really great player, a joy to watch.
@@Vaisin Absolutely. We could very well say THE most important. To this point, Sampras only won one slam, but it was three years before and still looking for a second, while Agassi was the Wimbledon reigning champion. This was a turning point, especially being able to win in the fifth after a 2 sets comeback from Agassi, gave Sampras the spark that propelled his 7 Wimbledon wins in 8 years
Andre was suffering from severe tendonitis in his right wrist for most of 1993. He ended up getting surgery at the end of the season. That explains his abbreviated service motion.
I was there at the end opposite the royal box. Fantastic day...fantastic weather. What a match this was and the other match on centre as Becker v Stich!! What a day
^^ At last some video proof that Sampras played a match at Wimbledon apart from the one against Federer! Would also be nice to see the 2000 final against Rafter, then we would get to see a successful young and old Sampras (and its also been 20 years...)
USTA are premiering Sampras v Agassi US Open final from 1990 later this week. Sampras played amazing tennis in the 1999 Wimbledon final against Agassi and nothing from Wimbledon channel, not even extended highlights. If anyone tries to upload the match, it gets taken down. I am not impressed.
@@BurnsTennis yeah, it's pretty gross. Meanwhile, they'll upload "classics" like Federer vs Benneteau. Oh well. At least TennisTV has started showing some appreciation for Sampras recently, with highlight reels and by featuring full-length matches of his.
@@hehehehehahahaha2025 Indeed, let's call it for what it is. If Federer did that to Agassi in a Wimbledon final, they would have released the DVD, Bluray, extended highlights, shortened highlights and the victory speech, if not the press conference as well.
And they both have just won exactly one grand slam title each! Sampras - 1990 USO and Agassi - previous 1992 year's Wimbledon! Haha truly crazy stuff in retrospect...
Weird to see Sampras putting tennis balls into his pocket, he didnt do that usually. Also interesting to hear that commentator said “Pete is not a pure Serve/volley player, he has also a good groundstrokes.”
Pete was predominantly a baseliner early on in his career. his volleys were very good but not great (half volleys were always exceptional though) but his serve made volleys easy for him. His movement was next level though ("he moves like oil") and forehand absolutely lethal. His volleys and backhand improved throughout his career though.
Imagine the historical ramifications if Agassi closed this match out - as he should have. The Agassi Sampras rivalry would have unfolded much differently with this physiological win under Andre’s belt. He could very well have defended his Wimbledon title as well. It’s conceivable Agassi may have finished his career with 10-12 Grand Slam titles if he’d lifted the trophy after winning this pivotal match.
Anyone reading the thread "What happened at this Wimbledon which had not happened for decades?" Note that Sampras played Agassi in the 1999 Cincinnati semifinal and Rafter in the 1999 Cincinnati final. These highlights are all over TH-cam.
I can't reply to @Manolin Fernandez diaz because for some reason that thread is not taking replies but he is totally wrong which needs to be pointed out.
I disagree. Sampras just better then Agassi. Esp in GS where it counts the most. People mention the slower courts nowadays. Looking at this match and current days even wimbeldom matches in 08 etc. I can't tell the difference if the courts are slower. It wouldn't have made any difference. I never notice the courts getting slower. Even when the pundits and commentators mention it.
Goes to show how much tennis has regressed technologically . Everything has been slowed down to basically favour the inferior performance side of play . Speed , power have been dulled . Speed and power are performance markers in really any sport , yet for some reason in tennis they have gone the other way
lmfao don't recall if this was trendy in the 90's but both US boys here had older girlfriends (Streisand 28 yrs to Agassi, Mulcahy 6 yrs to Sampras). Could get the feeling the US boys needed kinda older sisters or moms on tour....😅
It is a close match. Aggasi could have won if he was little lucky. The difference between these two players is not huge. Sampras can handle any amount of pressure.
I'd love to know the backstory of what was going on with his service motion. Trying to tweak it or something? Correct a problem? An adjustment just for this match?
@@gregkramer6197 he had a really bad wrist tendinitis at that time, he did withdrew from the French Open because of that and got surgery later that year.

I started watching tennis when i was 10 in year 2000 and fully committed to it (playing) the following year, and played for 11 years. So i was just in time to see the end of Sampras' carrer (inclugind his beautiful victory at the 2002 Us Open against Agassi, a match that i wanna re-watch after this definitely!) and enjoyed the the 2000s era. So i remember clearly that when Sampras retired the common opinion was that the record 14 slam was unbeatable. So it's really crazy that only in a 20 year span we saw not one, not two but THREE players winning 20-21-22 slams. Wow. We are lucky witnesses
The commentator was the late Bill Threllfall. Remember at the time of this broadcast, Sampras had yet to win Wimbledon. Sampras was not considered a serve volleyer specialist until towards the end of his career. At this stage on non grass surfaces he stayed back on his serve a lot. I would consider Edberg, Rafter and Krajicek as pure serve volleyers. Sampras and Becker were all court players.
@@andrewlegare6032 Is that really true or are they just sponsorsed cups they are drinking out of? These players were already drinking electrolyte drinks and protein shakes specially made for them. This is the 1990s, not 1927.
At first I thought surely not, those are just sponsored cups…but then I saw Sampras pouring some from a can and the umpire’s chair being a dispenser. 😮

Thanks a lot for the explanation and giving me this important perspective man!
Probably also explains why he looks so much worse than in the vid vs becker in 92!
impressive how well he did with that abbreviated motion nonetheless
This answered the question I was going to ask - cheers.
Its interesting because despite the weird motion, looks like Andre served very aggressive throughout the match.
This Wimbledon was the start of the great Sampras' rise to the top.
