I am surprised they chose this one, the context of 2001 was much more important, with Sampras out of the way, all four semifinalists were desperate to win and each felt they had a shot of holding the Wimbledon trophy. The 2001 match is more dramatic, the hot weather added to the drama.

I painted a sign RAFTER MAGIC and held it over a railing when I saw him at the Australian Open in 1997. He certainly showed it here and even after two decades, the magic still glows brightly!!
This was such a beautiful match to watch. Pat Rafter and Andre Agassi were excellent players and when they played against each other they brought out the best in each other. And played superb tennis.
Wow first time watching rafter very closely, majestic serve and volleyer. Andre did very well to keep composed. U could tell he was fuming with how he was playing or how he was allowed to play. Great match up. (I was there that year and saw andre v martin!) Wonderfull times.

3:04 Agassi was a freaky ball striker. I think he truly revolutionized the sport, set the tone for the modern game in so many ways. It's sad that guys like Djokovic, Nadal, and Murrays don't really have the Rafters, Edbergs and Macenroes to contrast their styles.
It IS sad. But I´m sure they´ll be pretty happy about it. There is no way they would have won 10+ majors with guys like that around. For example, put five time Wimbledon champion Djokovic into Wimbledon in the 1980´s, and I´d be surprised if he reached one final.
Nadal , murray & djoker would have perished in the 1970-80, 1980-90 & 1990 - 2004 eras. They would have never reached most of the grand slam finals as very good players like connors, borg, mcenroe, lendl, becker, edberg, sampras, agassi, rafter, goran were there in the respective eras & very good clay court specialists like courier, borg, kuerten, vilas , lendl were there. All these 3 survived only in this era ( particluarly after year 2010) because no good players were around except the great ageing federer, courts were much much slowed down ( all 4 slams are played from year 2008 like in clay courts), very covenient rackets, very easy rules ( allowing so much time to serve , strictly speaking only less than 10 seconds should be given for serving, allowing them to shout, grunt like lady players, double handed backhand , which is girlish style) etc. Only player who could have been no:1 , winning many tournaments in any era ( start of tennis year till end of the tennis year) will be the one & only Roger Federer., as he was, is & will be the only player ever with enormous talent, most skilled, amazing varieties , very elegant, smart, gifted & so on
Ando Mando he is uninspiring. Lloyd was the only pundit I can think of who explicitly said Nadal has got into Fed’s head after the AO09 final. No other pundit had the balls to say it so openly.
No towel between points, no bouncing the ball 50 times before serving. Agassi does waste time between points and he makes it so much more enjoyable to watch.

Rafter wasn't predicted to win slam titles like Agassi's direct rivals. Agassi had issues which we know about and he acknowledges.

Watch the 1996 Stuttgart and Hannover finals between Becker and Sampras. The problem today is the molasses slow indoor hardcourts and literal rocks they use for tennis balls on grass / indoor hard. Clay court tennis is MUCH faster than the 80s-90s because of lighter faster balls which I personally enjoy a lot more than the Lendl wilander snoozefests

Cash and Rafter played in different eras. Cash's style was outdated even in the 80s; but he pulled it off because he was quick as a cat, and had a great fighter's heart. I think Rafter is more comparable to Stefan Edberg.
Rafter was an underrated baseliner. He didn't always have the firepower but played the percentages really well, had a beautiful transition game and more than capable of winning long rallies. His two US Opens are more than adequate proof of that. He had great returns and passing shots. He was more of an all courter than cash in that regard though cash played superb tennis on medium slow rebound ace in 1988 when he made the final.

The all Rye have the advantage is that its roots go deeper, so the ground become more packed. The results is that shot become more consistent, which is ideal for baseliners
Agassi, a baseliner during the era of serve and volley and fast grass courts, still managed 2 Finals with one win. even though it was a silly choice, didn't even play there for 3 yrs due to having to wear all white. I think Andre would've beaten Pete in the final if he would've won this match. He was in better physical condition in 2000 then in 1999.

Frankly, I didn't get why Rafter is strong. He isn't good for stroke play and I often see his opponents facing breaking point. But he always keeps his game somehow. awesome.
Rafter uses the prince CTS oversize response precision, I believe. i’m surprised because it’s 110 Square inchs, and it’s incredibly powerful, almost no control though, and what’s weird is he uses a one-handed backhand with it.
Precision response 660, 97in2 he used and I know because I used the same racquet. Control was very good with that racquet and it was not the most powerful racquet out there. Prince did make the oversized version in this racquet but Rafter did not use it. The one he used in this match was the newer precision response titanium it was basically the same racquet as the older model (black/red with yellow lettering.)
Good match. Unfortunately, this was the era at Wimbledon when it was basically a case of "Let's watch 126 guys play each other to see who gets the honor of losing to Sampras in the final"
Rafter liked playing against Agassi, and Agassi liked playing against Rafter. Why? Simple, neither player took each other out of their comfort zone, hence the long battles often in their meetings. Also, in their sixteen meetings, Sampras exposed Rafter's shaky forehand volley a lot, perhaps the other players didn't expose it as much as Sampras. But maybe other players didn't hit their passing shots as hard as Sampras.
Either of these two , along with Sampras - would take it right up to ANY of todays top players including the big three On grass , there is simply no really good volliers in mens of womens games of this era

Man, I wish Pat Rafter played in the Roger, Rafa, Novak era. He and Roger would have had some amazing matches against each other. He would have had a very tough time with Novak and Rafa's games, but who knows, he may have been able to adapt for the time/style. He would have just fit well into the mould of talent and sportsmanship, unlike Sampras whose arrogance was such a turnoff despite his amazing talent and accomplishments.

Nowadays slower courts and more powerfull rackets advantage the baseliner. Also serve and volley technique is at higher risks and difficult to master.

Their '99 semi was also a great match. Agassi won in 3 but the first two sets were fantastic. I still have it on video 📼 😂

Rafter uses the prince CTS oversize response precision, I believe. i’m surprised because it’s 110 Square inchs, and it’s incredibly powerful, almost no control though, and what’s weird is he uses a one-handed backhand with it.
Precision response 660, 97in2 he used and I know because I used the same racquet. Control was very good with that racquet and it was not the most powerful racquet out there. Prince did make the oversized version in this racquet but Rafter did not use it.
The one he used in this match was the newer precision response titanium it was basically the same racquet as the older model (black/red with yellow lettering.)

Wasn't that the case for alot of tennis tournaments, not just Wimbledon?
Rafter liked playing against Agassi, and Agassi liked playing against Rafter. Why? Simple, neither player took each other out of their comfort zone, hence the long battles often in their meetings.
Also, in their sixteen meetings, Sampras exposed Rafter's shaky forehand volley a lot, perhaps the other players didn't expose it as much as Sampras. But maybe other players didn't hit their passing shots as hard as Sampras.

Man, I wish Pat Rafter played in the Roger, Rafa, Novak era. He and Roger would have had some amazing matches against each other. He would have had a very tough time with Novak and Rafa's games, but who knows, he may have been able to adapt for the time/style. He would have just fit well into the mould of talent and sportsmanship, unlike Sampras whose arrogance was such a turnoff despite his amazing talent and accomplishments.
