The switch up on the world's end girlfriend album is pretty crazy. People liked it quite a bit on aoty and rym but now that Fantano didn't like it suddenly people start hating on it. I really don't think it's that bad. I must say I haven't listened to the entire album only around 25 songs or so but still.

Considered myself an AJR fan for a while. Loved their music, didn’t get the hate, knew people could have different taste but still thought they were overreacting. The band’s genre may not be super mainstream but I thought they offered some good music to the table. Saw posts of people being like “this is the worst band EVER” “absolute trash music” “the band members SUCK” ect ect so I decided to keep it to myself that I liked them. But then I heard a close friend describing them as shitty millennial theatre-kid pop techno and I was like…. Whaaaaaa??? These guys are NOT techno not pop not ANY of that. Was wondering if my ears were broken cause I was not hearing that at ALL. Finally confused out of my gourd I searched up AJR into spotify (I had randomly been recommended a song and simply saved and listened their stuff from there) and instantly it clicked. The album covers, the band members, the summary, this was not band I was listening to. Hell, I had no idea who those three lil white dudes even were. Seems I had mistakenly read AJJ for AJR and never questioned it until that moment.
It was a cathartic moment to know I’m not actually some secret AJR fan and that instead I’m just stupid LOL
That ave Maria song sounds like the Analog horror version of itself.

that worlds end girlfriend album is absolutely not 1/10 caliber to me. its more of a 6/10 album for me.
i found the unashamedly gaudy maximalism throughout to be pretty admirable. admittingly, some of the elements thrown at the wall can come off half-baked, dull, or silly at times and the unrelenting maximalism can get tiring (especially on a lengthy triple album). however, the couple instances where the chaotically dense mishmash of glitchy sounds; abrasive noise; post-rockisms; orchestral strings; and various other elements actually comes together (such as in the name of love) are genuinely a bit sublime.
that being said, id point to hurtbreak wonderland as a much better starting point for worlds end girlfriend's music.
I agree, it’s more of a 7-9/10 for me but I understand a 6/10 too, but again, a 1/10??? It just makes little sense
It's actually a 10 in my opinion, and my 10th favorite album of the year. Maybe I just have bad taste but I found it genuinely consistent for a 2-and-a-half-hour album. I can see why people who aren't into this kind of stuff wouldn't like it but it was right up my alley.

Its a disjointed mess that tries to be something more than the sum of its parts, but stumbles and fails horribly before even starting. It sounds like a 14 year old's idea of prog metal
@@ileutur6863 I get that, but there are still plenty of things that can be appreciated off pretty much every song. It may not be the most organized or the best sounding album of all time, but that's exactly what they wanted. I'd say they accomplished what they set out to do
tbh i love meguri, the world's end girlfriend song brad listened to; it works brilliantly as the tribute to his lost child weg intended it as
is it messy and over the top, sure, but so are the avalanche of emotions coming with the situation that inspired it, and it succeeds at representing those with flying colours if you take the 9 minutes to listen to it in full
the slow buildup and periodic addition of noise manage to represent something being off, the wall of noise as a climactic payoff works as the representation of death, the glitchy noises in the outro are just as jarring as getting painful reminders of your loss can be
it's a masterpiece in telling a story without a word, much like eateot
...the problem is that he already released it on an ep 5 years ago (hence the immense number of listens on spotify) and he just re-released that half-a-decade-old song on resistance & the blessing with no changes

I don't see the connection to Everywhere at The End of Time. Been listening to WEG for maybe half a decade, heard it all. He doesn't deserve worst album of the year in my opinion. Even the Ave Maria he produced was still a complete composition. It isn't grating, but rather disturbing, and maybe that's offensive to Fantano being that the Ave Maria is a beautiful song his italian grandmother likes.

i do stand by the fact that both of them masterfully use sound to making the listener understand the feelings they're trying to convey
as for the ave maria rendition, i may be biased, as i watch a lot of analogue horror on youtube, but i couldn't help but recognize the exact same effects being used as distortion in some of those works
i'm fairly sure quite a few of them were actually used in the fnaf vhs tape series
i can see that weg attempted to go for disturbing vibes there, but because of this prior exposure, the effects he employed made it sound incredibly hackneyed, amateurish and vastly below someone on his caliber

It basically just goes to show how lazy, uninspired, and blatantly try hard TB2 was that it couldn’t even be considered worse than albums like Avenged Sevenfold’s which actually had some attempt at making something only for it to backfire horribly.
It’s just another way to diss TB2. It’s an album so weak, effortless, and forgettable that it can’t even achieve being the worst album of the year because it doesn’t even try to be anything more than pandering to dorks needing their fragile worldviews validated all in an effort to make a quick buck. It’s honestly a miracle it even landed on this list at all given just how little artistry went into the album whereas most of the albums on this list did try to have some sort of artistic expression
i genuinely don't understand the vitriol towards the world's end girlfriend song. i would totally get people not really being into that kind of music finding it boring, but to make claims like 'this is what people who don't like post rock think post rock sounds like' seems pretty over the top to me. to my ears it started off pretty inoffensive but then when it locked into that groove with the mellotron sounding instrument i found it to be rather hypnotic and i kinda fell into it. i listened to the full song after watching this video and i have to say i actually think it's quite great. it evolves a lot further than that when you give it a chance and i actually think it sounds like something that would be right up your alley. try giving that song a full listen without the pretext of fantano's opinion bc i genuinely think you'd enjoy it if you opened your mind a little

I think A7x at number one is in the same vein as Fantano giving Cudi number one. Clearly there are albums that are worse than it without a doubt, but there’s a level of effort and willingness to step outside the box that I think he admires. If something “sucks for the right reasons”, it’s more deserving of number 1 as an honorific.
Him putting LIBAD at number one, over BRAVE 2 is absolutely psychotic.
as someone who liked LIBAD a good bit, I understand every one of his criticisms. But there's no good reason why it was even in the top 10 worst this year

I am convinced that the only reason A7X and Sleep Token got this much traction in 2023 is because people who have never heard genre blending before just discovered them. Anyone who has actually heard other bands do it right hears the mess they actually made. Sleep Token is even passable, but A7X sounds like special ed kids impersonating a prog metal band.

I was honestly kind of shocked at the number 1 spot. I don't even care about A7x, but I loved Life is But A Dream. Sure, there's no denying the goofiness, but I think it serves the album, and gives it that unhinged energy. It also reminds me of bands that don't take themselves ultra-seriously, like Ween or King Gizzard.
