This is very helpful, thanks Rachel. I received a toolkit to perform this for Christmas, haven’t attempted yet. Now that I have seen this I have the confidence to do it!! Thanks tons. 😊
Great video as always. Only thing Id suggest is when setting intonation pluck the string as you'd play it rather than flat. At least that's what I've picked up and do just in case the attack changes due to the angle
Thank you, that really looked easy. But first of all I should have to buy the tools I need. About two months ago I went to a music shop nearby with my electro-acoustic Kala bass to have them change the strings. The guy was very friendly but the strings look awful at the tuning pegs and it took him quite some time to get the strings changed. So I was not thinking about doing string change myself. Perhaps I can try it on my electric Kala bass though.
Were they the polyurethene strings? (Rubber) They are a nightmare to put on compared to these and if you put them on properly (as Aquila suggest) they are tied on and never look tidy.
Thank you for this - it will be a great help if I decide to change the strings on my Flight JB that is on the way to me. What I would also really like to know is how to adjust the truss rod on my Journeyman UBass. My local ukulele fix-it man has done it for me once or twice but it seems to need adjusting fairly often with the changes we have in the weather (here in Australia) and I don't want to be running to the shop every week or two. Thank you for all the help you give us mere mortals out here in elderly newbie land.
I haven't need to do any trussrodd work recently but I'd ask your local guy to show you next time. I will make a vid if I do have to do any truss rod adjustments. Very glad to be helping
@@UkuleleWales Thanks Rachel. When I did suggest to the local chap that I might learn to do it myself, his rather vague response seemed to indicate that it would need an expert to avoid doing harm to the instrument. He wasn't charging me, so it's not that he wants the extra work. Next time I might try to be more persuasive. I love your work.
Do you measure action (stringheight) at 12`fret from top of the fret to underside of the string? At 11,33 may I ask what you are checking? And what you are looking/listening fore?
Yes, you measure from the top of the fret and bottom of the string at 12th fret. At that moment you mentioned, I am checking for any buzzing frets after lowering the action - playing every fret all the way up the neck.
Hi Rachel. Thanks for the useful video. I've been wary of attempting any maintenance myself but this seems doable. Is there a reason why you replaced one string at a time rather than taking the whole set off first?
Thanks Zita, yes these basics are really easy. Sometimes I will remove all strings just to give everything a good clean but no need with this one and I always feel the neck is less likely to move by doing one at a time as the tension on the neck changes less.
So you are restricted to the same gauge strings as you are taking off, because smaller ones will be loose in the nut, and larger ones wont fit in the nut without filing?
No, not at all. If they are bigger you can file the nut a little and ifthey are too small it is possible to add a tiny amount of superglue / mixed with something (can't think of the name) to fill them in a bit. It's much easier if you don't need to do any work but it is definitely possible.

Go for it Loree!
Thanks for explaining the process of setting up the short scale bass, looking forward to listening to some tunes with the flat wound strings
Glad you enjoyed.
Very interesting to see it being done. Thanks Rachel
Thanks Mike

Thanks Joanna, yes I do often do this but for the sake of filming I thought it safer to go on the workbench.

@ Thanks for your answer, Rachel. Yes, it were the polyurethene strings and I think the nice guy had no idea how to put them on properly nor have I.

What height above the neck should the strings on a fretless bass be, please Rachel? Thanks for the video. Very timely for me.
