I'm not quite sure about this "Moose test"... The Caterham weights the same as the F1 car you did this with, and beat the F1 soundly, despite the massive Tyre difference to say nothing of the rest of the performance difference. So really, as a Canadian... the Moose Test needs to be replaced with a good old fashioned British "Lap Time"...
Spot on. And those are the key points to remember. In my opinion, far too much emphasis is put on performance in cars. I’ve no doubt the Caterham would be more fun on the right road and track (I’ve owned two and driven a few supercars).
"I think I need a helmet, I'm eating so many bugs" -- Continues to test w/o a helmet 😂😂 Really glad to see this channel launch, best Monday morning ever!
Moose test, "Should be closely matched", McLaren fails above 75mph and Caterham still going at 100! Amazing result, and I feel the Caterham could still do it faster, but I'd be scared of the walls!
When I was like 17 I had a 1997 Buick Skylark. My brother and friend talked me into seeing how fast I could go backward. I hit 45mph and wiped out and went into the ditch. I was just down the road from my other friends work and walked down to borrow his 1970 something ford f250 that was lifted to pull my car out. I pulled it out, jumped out to unhook the chain, and looked up to see the f150 backing up towards me so I jumped out of the way and it almost drove over the front of my car and crumpled my hood. My friend failed to tell me park wasn't really park, but reverse, too. You had to slam it repeatedly into park and if you were lucky you'd find it. Just my little story of going reverse fast. Lol
This is the second 620R vs McLaren video I've seen and you both have missed one thing. Trying the drag race with no launch control on the McLaren and traction control also turned off.
@@yayayayya4731 Yeah, think you might need a new set of tyres when you arrive at that average speed :) Let me know when you're close, I'm only 20 minutes away; meet you there.
I absolutely fell head over hills for the Caterham when I first saw it on Tip Gear James May drove. I couldn’t think of anything more fun than racing a Caterham. Top of my Bucket List
Love both cars….Damn I’d love to drive a Caterham tho!! If I ever get one I’d like to get a H pattern gearbox….and maybe LHD…but I’d love to try em all!! Awesome video 🤟
I Absolutely Love this new channel Scott!😍 My suggestion would be: maybe add a camera angle that sees inside the car, drivers hands (steering, shifting) and a little bit through the windshield, Like the one on "Best motoring". Honestly that camera angle would be epic!!
I’m going to have to ad-lib here a little bit. The famous and delightful LJK Setright (one of the greatest motoring journalists ever that passed away in 2005) once told a story about one of the first times he did 100MPH on a motorcycle. His elation at reaching the magical ‘ton’ (sometime in the 1950s I believe) Today this seems trivial, but back then we didn’t have roads or machines capable of those speeds. He was passed by a couple in (again I may be wrong, but I believe) a Bristol. He looked over and noticed the passenger was reading a newspaper. His article was about how speed is relative to our mode of transportation. In the Caterham you will experience every element of the driving experience and I fear that experience will be a lost skill, as technology replaces the need for skill. I have always loved the absolute rawness of a Super 7 and I always will. How could you not be behind the wheel of a Super 7 and not have a constant grin on your face!
The known advantage of those light cars is at the same time a disadvantage when using them on road legal semi slicks. The light car tyres need a significantly longer warm up time compared to the heavy car. I did not notice threshold braking, you overbraked it and should have repeated that. For comparison a 460Kg seven with correctly adjusted double MCs bias on hot R888R decelerates better than a supercar but you need to be spot on. Moose test was impressive, better than I expected.
But those Caterhams are never as fast as you expect. Doing the maths if the 620s was the same weight as the mclaren it would have 712hp?? So why does it loose all races to a 570hp car? Its power to weight ratio with driver and fuel is significantly higher yet it looses all acceleration tests??? And my mate has a Caterham 310 with the 1.6 155 hp engine and I really was expecting much more!! It barely felt any quicker than my chipped ibiza tdi fr and much slower than my other mates fk8 civic type r
Put a 200lb driver in and you’re changing pwr to weight substantially It has 1950/60s aerodynamics so wind drag is huge It’s gearing and 6 manual gears doesn’t help staying in torque curve It’s not a drag race car, never has been - that said 11.4 s is v impressive with no launch control on a super light rwd car I have a 256hp Caterham that weighs 625kg - its only about as fast above 95mph as a 325hp Cayman S or 338hp E46 M3 on a track, but is way quicker than both out of a slow corner 40-95mph Once you get to 100mph+ you hit a brick wall and you need Big increases in power to make notable leaps, fighting the aforementioned deficiencies Wouldn’t change it for the world though, because I’m always the one having most fun in the asphalt
Very temped to get a Caterham (or an Ariel Atom or a Radical) ... if only the Canadian government would let me drive it on the streets as my daily.
Maybe an Arial Nomad would make more sense in Canada!? With some summers for track and good weather hijinks and some nobbly boys for snow and outrunning bears in the wilds!🏞️ Or even better, get a Nomad AND a Caterham! 👍🎆 🍻😁🥳
The honesty in this video is one another level, most super cars are indeed driven by out of shape blokes in their 50’s, it’s true though and we thank you for that, I don’t feel bad at all for still desiring a super car even though the mirror 🪞 would may suggest otherwise 😁🤦🏻♂️
That slalom test is the main reason for the existence of Caterhams, KTMs, Atoms, etc. Low gravity, loghtness, less width make them untouchable in agility tests or tight circuits.
Interesting that the Caterham's registration plate seems to spell Lego Cat when a Lego Caterham set was actually made in this same colour. I wonder if the reg is for that
In this case driver excuses really do make sense..in the McLaren you have an army of computers driving for you, only have to push the pedal, no skills required anymore. In the Caterham though..
On the moose test, the McLaren driver seems to be inaccurate, constantly hitting cones even though the car is smooth and stable and unfluttered every time. I think they both could exceed 100mph. If I remember correctly, Tesla's Model 3 held the record at about 82 mph on that Spanish channel that does moose testing? Is this the exact same setup?
The Caterham is a third of the mass of the McLaren, so I would expect it to be quicker through a slalom (or any corner for that matter). It’s not that the driver is inaccurate, it’s simply that the car doesn’t want to turn in (it understeers). As the great Colin Chapman said, “if you’re quicker through the corners you’re quicker overall”. I’d like to see them race on a twisty circuit.
The Caterham R500 Evo from twenty years ago held the world record for 0-100-0, and this 620R is faster. How times have changed - this isn’t even a quick McLaren from their range.
For nearly a quater of the price I would drive Caterham over the McLaren. The McLaren is an amazing car but the maintenance cost will be too high for me.
Many years ago I had a 1700 crossflow Caterham, nothing like as quick as the 620R. I guess more useable on the road though and still the most fun you can have with your clothes on. How do you fancy a 70 year old having a go now?
Laughed the EXACT same way the host did right before he did when he hit the cone again ahahahaha that was like an echo!! I wanna drive that caterham I bet I can beat you in the ferrari!

About the McLaren: "Nice."
About the Caterham: *"I NEEEEEEEEEEED IIIIIT!!"*

Probably best to move it to a location without the walls though in future
