    Top 5 Bullet Proof Plants.
What’s up Fishtank People? Dustin’s Fishtanks bringing it to you on a Sunday baby. How’s everybody doing I hope you are doing well? To day it Sunday it species Sunday. I’m trying to bring it to you with my 1,2,3,4,5 BULLET PROOF Plants.
Yep- I’ve got 5 species of aquarium plants that can be kept in nearly all aquariums. Overall these plants don’t require any extra particular care. While I always advise people that plants eat at their roots, these plants however require very little if any feed at their roots. In other words. They can grow just fine in plain gravel. They don’t need a special planted substrate or dirt in their aquarium. This video is made for anyone who is just getting into the planted tank. Many of these plants you will “Out grow” or quickly move on to different species. These plants are like the training wheels for a planted tank. They are hardy, they a generally resilient. They will give you success early and often and then you can move on to the next tier of plants or start trying other species of plants you have been eyeballing. So here are your top 5 bullet proof plants.
    Number 5. Java Fern
We are going to start with Java Fern. Come from Malaysia, the island of Java in Indonesia and thialand. I have seen photos of this plant growing out of the side of a riverbed that has entirely dried up, and it still comes back. This plant can weather the seasons and weather the abuse a beginner might give it. It has black roots like rhizome that prefers to be tied to a rock or a piece of driftwood. If you happen to grab some from me and put a note in the comments, I’ll throw you some wire in with your order at no cost. You can see a video here of how I tied it to a piece of wood and let it grow. (Use Java Fern Jam Video)
We are gonna move from a Fern from Asia to a Fern from AFRICA- Yes sir. Number 5 Fern to my Number 4 Fern.
African Water Fern. AKA Bolbitus Heudeloti. Named after the west Africa Plant explorer Jean Piere Heudelot (throwing it back to 1837 for you all)
I can’t tell you which plant is hardier, Bolbitus or Java fern. I have imported boxes from Africa and have them sit for 6 days in total darkness and still be just fine.
Yes- Bolbitus is found in West Africa SE
While they look strikingly different. Their care is about the same. They are a heavy water column feeder and like to be attached to a piece of wood or a rock of some kind. I have found that Bolbitus prefers a bit more water flow if you can provide it.
As a general rule, when you hear the words, “Africa” in your planted tank, think, “Hard water” and think HARDY!
If tied down well. Bolbitus is rugged enough to handle the abuse of African cichlids. (they are from the same place.)
There are other varieties of Bolbitus, however they aren’t the Bullet proof Bolbitus Heudeloti that I am talking about. There is both a “Baby leaf” Bolbitus and a “Bolbitus Asiatica” Not the same hardy plants we are going after here.

Nice Dustin! I own 3 of those and of those 3 some I bought from you, bolbitus, Anubias nana, and Windelov Java fern. All are doing well in a variety of tanks, all inside unheated. I may posit that the bolbitus, especially, but also anubias and Java fern may be simply weighted on the substrate and they will grab the gravel, in my case, and do very well. Hornwort I have had do well and also turn to a needle pile, and never have I had great success with Java moss, it lives but that is about that. I take slight umbrage with terming these beginner plants. Certainly they are, granted, but alone they make for wonder looking tanks. if you mean that one must have a dirted tank and play with more difficult species to go past beginner stage I disagree. I did really enjoy this video, good job!

V1 Rotate yes it will, activated carbon is among the best chemical filtration media in the world. I'd avoid liquid fertilizer and stick to dirt and pellet, the carbon will absorb some of the chemicals but not as much as the liquid fertilizer

I can attest to the hardiness of java moss. I had a 10g that sat dry in my attic for about 10 months while i was at school (had a 20g long in my dorm). I transferred the fish home to the 10g at the end of the school year and the java moss spontaneously started growing out of nowhere it seemed. About a dozen small strings of it appeared out of the gravel after a week or so.

I stick to realy easy plants like java moss and fern and anacharis. None of the fish or snails will eat the former, but i have to grow anacharis in a separate small tank to keep it from being eaten. I tie the java moss to the air tubing of my air stones, since it really prefers moving water. It tends it move toward the filter intakes for the same reason, but i just remove any on the intake covers when i clean the tank every week. I have 2 free floating bunches of it on either side of the filter in a nano tank and they have stayed put so far. My white cloud minnows love spawning on the moss.

Please help me Dustin. I tried all of these plants several times. I only have success with hornwort. Hornwort conquered my tank. It completely filled all my tank. I had to get rid of tons of it. But any other plants melted in short time. I have two scenarios for this melting: my tank is 150x70x50 cm. it is a big tank. So i bought two 200 watt LED floodlights. Can this much light be the reason of this melting effect? Second scenario: i bought some black snails which i dont know their scientific name. I regret having bought them. They always chomp up my plants. What is your opinion?

My GH and KH are high (hard water here in Denver) and I dose once a week with a fert mix that has all of the macro and micros, 8 hours of high light 20 small fish and 4 mediums in a lightly dirted tank 2 years old fron last reset 55 gal. no C02 Low alge and slow growth in the plants, 11 years in the planted tank hobby.

I must have the silver bullet for java fern. I've killed it dozens of times. I've got 5 kinds of anubias, java moss, anachris, marimo balls, s. repens and crinum growing but java fern just turns black and dies. I've never taken the rhizome out bc I keep hoping it will send leaves out but they just mush out and decompose. and yes I don't bury the rhizome and have attached or to moss, wood and left floating. idk why but fern just isn't mor me apparently. Awesome video!

i've somehow killed Java moss. no idea how i did it. now that i know more about live plants, i'd love to try again.
but, Anubias is impossible to kill. i have some small plants in a wine glass on the window sill, hardly gets any water changes, but they're growing.

How come my java fern and moss is dying in a 30 gallon, attached to root wood, pH 7, plant fertility (liquid) and it still goes and dies 😩😞

I had an anubias that kept going #growing
Switched for a year to a led(s) light.. Stopped growing! Sometimes I wonder if the green plant still lives.. Lol.. Stays the same like a plastic one

How about in a cold water goldfish tank? The goldfish will always end up winning but most plants die in my cycled tank.

Dustin's Fish Tanks Thank You! I don't have a huge tank just a 37 gallon tall. I've had a 18 marineland submersible led strip light on it before I dirted and planted it. I don't really think it's enough for it. Can I get away with the single bulb fixture for now till I can get a bigger fixture?

marine land LEDS are dogshit imo....(others feel free to speak on that) go get a double t5. they are cheap on ebay....lower the water level too for more light

Dustin's Fish Tanks Thanks for the advice. Im realizing that now haha. They served the purpose before I planted it just for a light on the tank.

Funny thing - I have managed to kill both java moss and java fern :) Maybe I tried to care too much. no idea. They just died. Now I have success with both of them in almost no maintenance tank with some LED white lights and only thing I do is water change every 2 weeks.
