Plants are the key to successful fish culture. Dirted tanks and healthy plants are bringing many new people into our hobby with tremendous success. We start our newbies on dirted tanks and they love the results. Thank you for featuring one of the real breakthroughs in our hobby.
Hey, I'm pretty new to fish keeping and aquatics in general. I've put down a soil substrate but this caused a bacterial bloom (or so I've been told, personally I think it was the soil tinting the water but then what do I know lol). Should I wait for this to disappear before adding plants or will they still get enough light through?
Plastic tanks do nothing but my tank has that one and lives happy. No water hanges, a little little problem with algae. weekly I clean gravel, glasses and filters (2 small HOB). I don't use ceramic rings or pomice but zeolit (changed monthly) and activated carbon (changed weekly). My tank is full of fishes in total wellness and water is very very clear. There isn't only a way to keep fish tanks, otherwise they would all be the same. Very boring.
Sir, I've just discovered your channel. I've had my 55 gallon tank for a few months. Your videos rock! Instant sub, please continue! Edit: Forgot to add that your beard is glorious! Keep at it, sir!

Thank you so much! As I struggle with my little 10 gallon planted aquarium. I want to get a larger tank but afraid I will not be able to maintain it with the live plants. This video has helped me gain confidence in my decision. I use fluvial substrate for planted aquarium. But, its so messy when I have to relocate or add new plants.
Fluval substrate does get messy. One trick I learned from another aquatic enthusiast (Tanner Serpa via TH-cam) is to put patches of Fluval in the spots you plan to plant your plants. Then top it off with gravel/sand of your choice. Then plant your plants. This keeps the mess down by holding a harder layer above it and allows you to have the desired look you want while still having good nutrients for the plants underneath the substrate.
So glad this came up as recommended for me! I've got a planted tank and battling algae big time... Thinking of pulling the plug on live plants, but I really believe in an ecosystem approach to tanks and ponds. Another video tonight talked about trimming the plants too. I have the simple plants but I'm thinking I put in way to "fertile" of substrate. Before I switched tanks and used a super nutrient dense soil I had no algae problems. Maybe I need to go back to aquarium gravel...
Hard to say for sure if that is the issue. Maybe if the nutrients are leaching into the water column? Might be worth testing the water to see if that's the case.
My tank is almost primarily gravel and I still have a lot of green algae. It's kind of recent however and mostly because my scheduled timings for light cycles went out so I accidently allow more light then needed as I have to remember when to turn it off. I don't gravel vac planted tanks. I may take a gravel vac and hover over the surface if there is a spot that collects detritus. I do gravel vac all my non-planted tanks.
I have a very basic question about the live plants...should I remove them from the pots they came in or just busy the pots in the substrate? I love the way you have some house plants across the top of some of your tanks.
Good question. If the plants came in the plastic pots I would remove them. Usually the pot has a gel-type material in it that shouldn't go into the tank.
Is there any downside to using artificial driftwood and then having everything else be real? Plants and such. This channel has been such a big help, thank you!

Awesome video! I just found your channel and am brand new to keeping plants. I purchased a bunch of plants from Aquarium Co -Op last month. I’ve got a question... Where can I get Java Moss? Cory doesn’t have it on his site.
I put weeds for plants, like what are grown were it's very humid. Got some still alive and growing after 3 months. Some only last a week. Try it it's fun.
Krips = Crypts / Cryptocoryne Love ya, Jason. But, if people want to look the plants up they will need to know how to spell it. But, great video. I have all low tech plants as well with Easy Green and HTH pool filter sand in most tanks. My water here in Houston is hard as well. I am also having lots of success with Aponogetons and Swords. Thank you, Jason!
Full Moon Aquatics Holy cow - the spell check must have gotten me on that one. Not cool!! Thanks for catching that. I reviewed this video a 100 times and didn’t catch that geez.

THANK YOU for straight forward, myth despelling information. And very easy for a novice like me to understand it, and not be overwhelmed. there are times i give up because i get overwhelmed. i'm going to move my betta into a 5g with a couple plants. new subscriber :)
Lflower1 Stars I got a plant package from Aquarium Co-Op a couple years ago and a decent amount of the plants came from the continued growth of them. I also get some from local clubs.
Jason I'm studying real hard!! I have PTSD..plant traumatic stress disorder 😭😂😂 I killed a java fern😭 is there any hope for me?😂🌱🌿 But on the flip side, I got some jungle Val last month from aquarium co-op and so far so good!! I'm trying to be totally prepared when I start this 20 gallon extra tall. Lol.. I really appreciate how you explain things and really enjoy learning with you and mrs. Prime Time's channels!!!
Thank you! Yes, I have a hard time with java fern for some reason. I find crypts and anubias tend to like our water much more. Jungle val also grows like crazy for us too!
I finally just started into plants within the last couple months after 20 years of not doing it with my fish keeping. How often should I be fertilizing my tank? Also do I remove the lead weights from my jungle val. I have 4-5 java fern, 2 jungle val and a big Crypt in a 60 gallon breeder (figured you needed to know that for the fertilizer.) Also the tan itself is extremely heavily stocked with 30+ Zebra Danios, several gobies, Striata Loach, 9 Panda barbs and 4 denison barbs.
Hey Audri! Most of the ferts come with a recommended dosing schedule. I like to put root tabs in every 4-6 months and I’ll do liquid ferts every week or two at the recommended dosage. If excess algae builds up you can back off the liquid ferts a little. 😀
Hello, noticed you didn't mention Amazon swords in this video, I've found those really easy to grow too and I am fairly new to the hobby. I have 2 different kinds in a 29gal, stuck a seachem flourish tab near each one, and they're growing like crazy. Gravel substrate and pretty hard water with pH of 8.5 (common to my area of Michigan). Couldn't these plants be included on the list?
Oh my gosh bless you this is the question I also had. I just purchased some plants from an aquarium shop that I trust. But I was wondering if it is safe to put them in right away. I'll drain the water they came in for sure just to be safe!
Hello Mr Jason, Happy New Year 2024. Thank you for this video. I am starting a 29 Gallon fish tank. For a first time I would like to have live plants 🌱 in my Aquarium and for substrate I am planning to use Sand and Not gravel. My question to you is the next one. Do I have to put soil at the bottom and sand on Top in order to have a good foundation ? Or it is ok only with Sand. By the way, I am using Fresh Water. Thank you and have a good day. Kind regards, Angie. 🙋🏻♀️
I just found your videos and i love them!! If i might make a suggestion, when you do your intro and just immediately transition back to you saying "Hello this is Jason" what if you did a title sequence? During said sequence you showed a mini montage of some of your favorite tanks. Then transitioned back to you saying "Hello this is Jason" again love the content!!
Good video! I love the looks of jungle val (been thinking of getting some), but does it take over your tank? Some say if you trim it will die. Is that true? How do you keep it under control? Same goes for java moss, is it hard to keep it under control or get rid of once you put it in your tank?
Barb Kelly It’s really easy to remove what ever you don’t want growing in the tank. I cut it on an angle with scissors because I heard that helps keep it from having issues. Not sure if it helps, but mine doesn’t die after cutting.
Question: so, about a 18 months ago I started up a 450liter (I think 100gallons). It was supposed to be tanganykan so I didn't use loads of substrate and I added lots of rocks, and I made a continuous drip system for the water changes that will give the tank about 25L a day (5ga). I couldn't find the fish I wanted (I'm in Italy) so I started adding some easy plants, just like the ones in your video and later I got some angle fish and Denison barbs and electric blue acaras. I finally found some leleupi, and altos and cf chucked them in as well. Then a couple pelvicachromis n.t. And so far the community is doing just fine. I had some diatom/algea problems and added 2 baby ancistrus and a royal pleco with his very own piece of wood and over a couple months the algea was gone and hasn't come back, except on my plants. Their leaves just get covered with the stuff and the plants won't grow I assume becuase the algea blocks light and acts parasitically with the available nutrients. I have three 25watt 6500k leds on the tank which is 60cm tall, they are posed directly on the DIY plexiglass lid. I add jbl ferropol which has iron potassium and some trace elements. PH 7.5, kh 15, 24 degrees c (maybe 75 f) mid range gh, nitrates at 20/25. How do I solve the problem? I f you read all of that, thank you.
Any root feeding plant usually gets root tab fertilizer instead of liquid ferts. I try to limit liquid ferts to only tanks that have plants that require it. Hope this helps! Sounds like a cool tank!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks I haven't tried those yet because I was hoping it would be sufficient not cleaning the substrate in planted area. Maybe the extra juice from the root tabs will do the trick. That doesn't explain having the same problem with my moss and annubias tho. I'm not running co2 because.... I just wanted to make it work without co2.... Thanks a lot for responding. I'm glad I subscribed.
Hi im still new to taking care of fish~ i was wondering, i have a gravel base. Which plants would you recommend for me to grow? Also, if i do keep plants, how would this change the way i clean the tank (gravel vacs etc.)
I only keep certain decent looking and fish safe fake plants for 2 reasons: easy to toss in a quarantine tank, or to stick under a filter outlet to baffle the flow, at least til i come up w something better like making a simple multi-tiered waterfall baffle since most of my fish arent crazy about turbulent water.
I have kept aquariums since I was a kid (63 now) started my first live plant aquarium always had plastic plants. Question is when I purchase live plants that are already planted in the the little bucket should I removed the bucket or just insert the whole thing into the grave?
Jennifer Holden I remove the plants from the bucket. Planting into the gravel depends on the plant (careful of rhizomes if Anubis, which should not be buried), but yes, if the plant roots into the substrate I place the roots into the gravel.

FF, why plants are the key to successful ?
I just started keeping fish again. You don't spend half the vid bullshipping. Just direct and informative. Thank you for advice. Subbed.
Couldn’t agree more
My dad hates plastic aquarium plants because they take to much surface area and they do nothing
I hate plastic plants as well.
And they hurt the environment so there’s just no positive
But plastic plants are so perfect if you have plastic fish ?
That beard is most excellent.

I agree. I would like to know if he uses root tabs or liquid fertilizer, what brand...and I'm sure that he uses co2

Swords can be a solid option as well!
thanks for the info, great video simple and easy for beginner to start,,,,
Richelim Pengju Thank you for watching!
Very informative for a noob. Question re liquid fertilizer- will it kill shrimp?
It depends on the fertilizer. Usually the bottle will say if it is invertebrate safe.
Great video! Thank you! Do you recommend treating plants and/or quarantining plants prior to adding them to your main tank?
I don’t, but some people do. If they’re left in a tank by themselves for a couple weeks there probably isn’t a need to add anything during QT.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you for the info!
Have fun!
Great video! Are under gravel filters bad for the plants? Thanks for the video!
packard5682 They can be if the roots grow into the holes and prevent water flow.
Thanks 👍for the 🌱 tutorial, keep 🎥 coming. Enjoy your weekend my friend.
rick rodriguez Thank you!
Love a jungle tank. I have the the top 5 you mentioned and more. Great video!
Very cool!
Love 4:10 design ❤
singapore watching,learning
thanks for the advice
I just found your videos and i love them!! If i might make a suggestion, when you do your intro and just immediately transition back to you saying "Hello this is Jason" what if you did a title sequence? During said sequence you showed a mini montage of some of your favorite tanks. Then transitioned back to you saying "Hello this is Jason" again love the content!!
Ya, I've been thinking about that for a while. :-)
Great beard man. 🧔
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks Jason, I think I'll give it a try.
Thanks again, this is a huge help!
No matter what plants I get they just die I'll keep a look out for the plants that you mentiond tho maby that will help
Thanks for the great info.
Excellent Video Thanks, Cheers
Nice work Jason! I use a lot of the plants you mentioned in your video as well!
Yep, and you're doing a great job with them!
Great topic! Nice fish tanks👌
Saying hi from Puerto Rico 👍
Thanks for watching!
Hi im still new to taking care of fish~ i was wondering, i have a gravel base. Which plants would you recommend for me to grow? Also, if i do keep plants, how would this change the way i clean the tank (gravel vacs etc.)
Great questions. Jungle val, crypts, anubias, java fern are all great options. Once I add plants I don't gravel vac around the root systems.
Learned so much, thanks so much
Magdalena Rodriguez Awesome - glad it helped!
How about the kit LED/Hood combo's that came with my aquariums....dump them or try some plants and see......??
Depends on the light, but we have used them to grow low light plants like anubias and even crypts.
