    Holy God. Thank you so much buddy. I've got the same fork with my Xtrada 7 and the lockout wasn't working that well, it felt like something is loose but didn't exactly know what to do about it. Your video really saved my day. Thank you once again ❤️

    I like your video guide. After 11 years of use and about 27.000 km, I decided to service the fork. Although it still worked fine. I viewed several videos and didn't find any pertaining to my specific fork. However, while doing the service I noticed that with a little technical knowledge, you can do similar forks as well. One other thing I have noticed, is that there was no need to actually do a service /cleaning on my fork. Yes, the grease looked old, but there was no water or dirt inside. It has been a learning experience for me. Maybe there is a need on bikes that are in the dirt frequently. My fork doesn't perform any better after the service. Thank you to the creator of the video. Very great job.

    This video was so helpful to me.
    Had 2 bike shops laugh at me when I told them i was going to service my forks.
    Anyone debating weather or not to service your forks, give it a go!
    After 6 months of use mine had completely stopped working. They were not absorbing any small bumps and would stay completely ridged over rough terrain until a large amount of pressure was put onto them such as a drop etc.
    I didn’t take the whole fork apart like in the video and still had good results and it only took around 20mins. I turned my bike upside down and took the wheel and break off. All i did was take off the adjuster nob, undo the allen bolts, take off the lower legs and give everything a clean and re-grease
    If you get a torch you can see Inside the lower legs there are small square indents around 1cm x1cm around the inside of the shaft. I put a fair bit of grease in these indents as this is where the stanchions sit once they are put back together and will help keep them lubed.
    You don’t have to take everything apart on the forks just take the lowers off and clean them up and put new grease on the inside and around the seals.
    The forks are working great for me now this video helped a lot. Thanks

    • @gavinfreeman3234
      @gavinfreeman3234 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same reaction from my bike shop - so will do myself. Did you put in the foam rings? Does anyone know what diameter they would be? Great video very helpful

    • @yaface120
      @yaface120 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gavinfreeman3234 didn’t put in the foam rings. By the sounds of it suntour forks run off grease alone and don’t have oil. I think the foam rings are mainly to act as a sponge for the oil to lube the stanchions as they move. After around 20 hours of riding i can start to notice them stiffening up again, i think its due to the dry dust getting into the forks. On sr suntours website they suggest the forks seals need regreasing from the inside after every 25 hours of riding so i will be doing this more often now as i found it a fairly simple job that only took 20 minutes or so.
      Have you done yours yet?

    • @gavinfreeman3234
      @gavinfreeman3234 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yaface120 Nope But that makes sense - on the video it looks like there is some oil in fork - but only about 5ml. Never done it before, what grease do you use? It is my sons bike and i can feel it starting to stiffen up a little. But he is such a light weight that i suspect he could go another 100 hours before it become a problem

    • @yaface120
      @yaface120 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gavinfreeman3234 on rockshox forks videos it seems like the oil gets put in the legs where the stanchions sit? On the suntours the oil goes in the top compartment im guessing to lube the spring. Im not an expert so could be wrong.
      I used fenwicks high speed grease as it was all i had around. I think its made mostly for bearings but its pretty thin so i thought it would be ok. Most videos I’ve watched recommend sram butter or slick honey if that helps

    I have my Suntour Epicon X1, which I am using for almost 20 years now, and still working very nice and smooth. All parts are almost exactly the same as your XCR except on the negative spring assembly. My X1 negative spring had a stopper with pin to adjust the travel of the fork. I changed the travel from 100 to 120mm 4 years ago, and that was the first and the last time that I serviced my fork. You mentioned that your XCR do not have an Oil Foam Ring, mine have.

    FYI The Q Loc axle.
    After loosening the quick release, make sure to push then turn/tighten the bolt to keep the flanges in. This is the correct manufacturer's guidelines.
    Because for one reason, it will jam up on some models of hubs, due to step downs and widening inside ;)

    My wifes, Cube WLS has one of these forks. Having serviced RS, Manitou and Marzocchi forks I will have ot tackle this one at some stage. Definitely a cheap build even compared to a RS Recon, the non serviceable damper is a fail. I will be tempted to swap it for a better and lighter fork instead of servicing it.

    Great video, worked for the XCR Air that is fitted as standard on my 2017 Specialized Rockhopper. The forks were terrible before the service, even though they have not been used much, but they are far better now. When putting it back together I needed to have some air pressure in and apply a sharp downward force to get the air spring side bottom bolt to tighten properly, before this the internal shaft kept spinning. As per the video, I then had to let the pressure out to get the rebound side bottom bolt in. I gave the internals a full degrease and only used oil when reassembling, the fork now gives far better small bump performance. Others have also suggested oil rather than grease improves the fork.

  • @cortarelva
    @cortarelva 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just added a small piece of foam inside the air chamber to make the fork more progressive so it reacts better under small bumps and it actually works. I am now using less pressure but I can feel it getting stiffer as it reaches the end of travel.
    Until now it was all soft and bottom out or hugely stiff with no small bump compliance at all. Its a nice fork (for what it costs) and it has taken quite a bit of abuse and its going strong after a 1000Km of trails.

    • @denismacfarlane255
      @denismacfarlane255 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you clarify what type of foam? Was it directly inside the air chamber above the piston?

    • @cortarelva
      @cortarelva 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@denismacfarlane255 It was a small piece of closed cell foam that i cut to size and with a hole in the center that I attached to the inside of the air top cap . I have had to cut it a bit to get it right but it enabled me to lower the air pressure so the fork works better on small bumps without bottoming out anymore. Suntour used to sell a piece off foam for this fork and that is where I got the idea from.

      since the negative spring is a coil you can just fill the air chamber with oil to reduce the volume. But dont dump it in, do it in for example 5ml steps (fox float fluid pillow packs are nice for this)

    I just got a 2022 version of this fork. I have owned a couple of the higher spec suntour Aion forks before and loved them. Initial impressions of this one are pretty positive after 1 ride... still need to play arround with rebound settings. The forks specs are very good for the money. It's not as nice as a more expensive ones, but you get what you pay for and it seems a capable budget fork. There are still no foam rings but I ordered some... didn't cost much. I'm wondering if it is because they have steel stantions? I noticed that none of the suntour or rockshox forks with steel stantions feature a sag indicator ring... and now wondering if they all omit the foam rings too, possibly to prevent rust forming if they get saturated with water from neglect / poor maintenance 🤔 I will be careful to do regular lower leg services to be safe. Overall i like this fork. It should not be confused with the realy cheap steel sprung suntour forks on "leasure" mtb's. This is significantly higher performance and quality. Thanks so much for the great tutorial 😀

    Could you do some epixon forks service?

    • @tadgarman8463
      @tadgarman8463 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the same. Clean the outside of the fork with 91% isopropyl alcohol first to avoid washing more dirt into it. Unbolt and drop the lowers like in the video by carefully pulling with one hand on each side, don't grab the crown if it feels stuck insert the bolts 4 turns and try tapping again. Spray everything with 91% rubbing alcohol, not degreaser. Wipe everything clean. Use a dowel and clean shop towel to wipe inside the lowers. Regrease inside the wipers and on the spring shaft and rebound shaft. Carefully slide it back together and torque the bolts to 10nm. Go ride it! Airspring service is only needed if it's leaking and the cartridge can't be removed so there's no point to risk messing it up.

    great video man!! is the rebound clicky ? or just does it just turn with no sound ?
    i just got a new bike with the same XCR air and i don't see any difference between the rebound fully open or closed so i was wondering if it might be faulty

      @@tmonteur5264 thanks buddy , did you have to disassembly the entire fork or can i just remove the red knob and adjust it , and what kinda tool did you use to do that ?

  • @myfreakyvalentine

    This is very similar to my Raidon LOR boost fork that came on my 27.5+ bike, except the rebound knob/bolt and the air shaft fixing bolt aren't recessed like this XCR. I was also surprised to find no fork oil inside, however mine did have the foam rings above the bushings. It is a solid fork but terrible at ironing out smaller bumps and plushness. I am currently trying to tune the fork using different negative springs to see if there is any improvement, but so far still pretty disappointing.

      @myfreakyvalentine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justahasbeen Thanks for that. Have ordered a new Rockshox Sektor now anyway and waiting for that to arrive. I'll see how they compare and if the Sektor is worth it. Not a high end fork by any means but I would hope its better. I wonder about the longevity of that compression/rebound assembly too and the fact that it's not rebuild-able could be a false economy.

      Thought I should add to my comment that my Rockshox Sektors have been amazing. A whole other level and I would say worth the money for sure. Pay a couple of hundred more (AUD) and you get so much more tune-ability, quality and performance. You can see where the extra cost goes.

      Another work around with good results, is to buy some closed cell foam, and cut to shape so it fixs in the air chamber- through the top. It works like air spacers making the fork more progressive through the stroke. So, once it's installed run a lower pressure in the fork to improve small bump performance and combined with adding oil into the lowers it should be a dream. This will be my next project on bike with Epixon forks :) I can't say how tall the foam should be as this is something I'll have to discover, using standard air spacers for reference :)

      I tried with my XCR 30 with custom parts and 3d printing. I was trying to recreate Rockshox's Debonair system, but Suntour make their stantions with different inner diameter at the different places, so the stantion inside is not straight. I give up, because i can't find the right size pipe to make it like the Rockshox's Soloair.
      Only if my Xcr was 32mm, i would buy the Soloair from Rockshox. 😢😢😢
