  • Robert Plant is arguably the most iconic rock vocalist of all time. As the frontman for Led Zeppelin, his dynamic, soaring vocal style was the perfect lead for the band’s unparalleled musicianship. After Zeppelin broke up in 1980 following the death of drummer John “Bonzo” Bonham, Plant set out on his own and recorded songs that drew inspiration from North African music, psych rock, and the Blues.
In 2007 Plant began collaborating with Alison Krauss, the famed bluegrass singer and fiddle player. Under the guidance of producer and Broken Record alum, T Bone Burnett, their first album, Raising Sand, sold over a million copies in the US and won five Grammys, including Album of the Year.
On today’s episode, Rick Rubin talks to Robert Plant about recording his latest release with Krauss, "Raise the Roof." Plant also talks about how a trip to the Sahara in the early ‘70s with Jimmy Page inspired them to write “Kashmir.” And he remembers the first time he met John Bonham as a teenager and Bonham declared himself, “the best drummer in the world.”

it's obscene how all of you do interviews with super-interesting people and ALL OF YOU TRUNCATE THE CONVERSATIONS artificially.
Umpteen guests on so many shows and podcasts on YT ruin the moment, like how Bill Maher's Club Random should be 3 hours long and the Hollywood Roundtables should be 3 hours long.

Well put and so true. Walking off stage after an insane "Heartbreaker" ending an incredible Page Plant show,, 1st tour.
I was(a lucky stars, pinch me please, wake me up evening ) backstage.
      Walking toward me ,(incidentally..)
All 6 foot 4 , white boots, blonde mane, after an incredible vocal performance (14 Plant shows alone).
      I said something..
      He stopped,.
I gave him a rock hug-Im not a freak- it seemed appropriate.
I just said "Thank you" "
He shook off his escorts attempts to interfere.
      Robert returned said hug.
With that Plant look with the eyes..
Said" Thank you Thank you" walking off into the dim backstage lights.
I think I may have talked about something else the next couple of weeks, but I doubt it.
      Sorry about the war story.
Point is, you're observations I experienced.

      I love that s***.
      AND hes witty. Funny.
And for about 8 years, he was one of those powerful people on the planet with the most powerful voice on the planet..

      That's fine.
      Plant motioned him to move
" it's okay it's okay !" Motioning him out of the way
Gave me this enthusiastic hug back.
I still remember feeling the padding on his shoulders ...

      Little pads sewn in
I just remember tapping that padding.
      Hugging this guy ..

This is the best Robert Plant interview I've seen or listened to. Plant is a simple guy, while at the same being very complex and layered. He's like a fine Italian spaghetti sauce which has been simmering all day and made by an Italian grandma from the old country, mixed with the finest soul food loved, cooked and conjured up in a back street bar in New Orleans, sprinkled with an Opus from the 1700s and wrapped up in music from every corner of the planet. Robert loves cultures and respects cultures from all over the world - you can hear it. He is acutely intellectual yet self-effacing at the same time. He jokes around so much - one has to be on their toes -- and clarify if Robert is being serous or not. Rick Rubin is a huge Zeppelin fan and his quotes about tons of specific Led Zeppelin songs are all over the LZ wiki song pages. Robert's a musical treasure and Rick was the perfect person to draw all of this out of him. Rubin is a legend as well - from the Beastie Boys to Weezer. Two legends which we were able to enjoy - in one place. Loved this - two thumbs up !

The only thing I wonder that he hasn't told anyone about to interviewers is...Say Vancouver, I believe March 19 1975. Dazed and Confused is 42 minutes and some. What would he do during Jimmy's Bow Solo when he was backstage? And How many he could do (not any snowflakes) during an extra long DAC backstage before he had to get back to the front of the stage. And did that dictate on how long Jimmy would be onstage during the bow solo?

I was never really into Led Zeppelin, just a little bit too young but over the years I've learnt just how important they are, helps that a lot of their songs are so memorable and used a lot in Movies. Then I heard Fool in the Rain, blew me away, Bonhams drumming like something I'd never heard before, left a lasting impression to this day.

Man, this one of the very best interviews with Plant I've heard! Rick always seems to bring his conversation partners into authentic dialogue and as a result they are themselves, freely at that. Plant is often so cagey as he anticipates the next bane question about mudsharks or somesuch played out topic. Hearing Plant at ease with a worthy partner really is a joy as his enthusiasm for music history in the past one to two hundred years shine through unfiltered. His laugh that you hear here and again is so real. Thank you Rick for these conversations, if there's anything redeeming in the culture in this century so far, it's the return of the long-form conversation, mostly using the podcast format. Also, Plant saying he is reading "Travels With Charlie" just lights me up. I relate to how reading Steinbeck's later work illuminates the various facets of America the weird, bringing the reader into the room (or pickup truck cap camper) to experience it at the authors side.

Expanding my taste & knowledge is one reason I played this recording. Thank you so much for posting this!! Rick Rubin’s voice is so soothing & his genuine interest in actuality knowing how Plant it anyone in music feels, thinks, interprets, plays, or songs songs well known or new to an audience is almost singular. I remember walking down the beach and hearing someone singing Midnight Hour and I thought it was actually Wilson Pickett ! Steve sounded EXACTLY like him . I couldn't believe the voice coming from this barely 5 foot tall and clearly drunk cockney with a guitar that probably weighed more than he did . I was a fan from the first 30 seconds. It was something like [Jason - I love you like a son and you're a drummer, but no one can replace your dad. No one can play like him. When he passed away - that was it for Led Zeppelin and I meant it]. I respect Robert - he stuck to his loyalty to Bonzo and has never considered wavering.
