  • Finally after an unexpectedly long hiatus, the next entry of Returning to Pride Rock is here! This time I dive into The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, a pilot to a TV series for a... rather young audience... not a very smart move for the franchise, but how does it hold up? Is the pilot as bad as it was made out to be? Are there any redeeming qualities beyond the pilot? Watch to find out!

For me, the only thing that caught my attention and made the pilot worth watching, was hearing James Earl Jones reprise his role as Mufasa.

As a Lion King fan, as well as a sucker for anything relating to animals, I was a bit worried on where Return of the Roar was going to go. I'll admit, it was a bit of a shakey start, like what you said about Characters and Continuity, but I did find it passable for me, though it could have been done better.
As for the series, I LOVED it!!! I at first saw it as Disney's response to the success of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" and/or "Wild Kratts", with a mix of lessons in life as well as education on the Animal Kingdom. Heck, for the later, this series taught me some things about animals that even I as a Zoo educator didn't even know about!
I would personally love to have a discussion with you on this series sometime. But for now, thanks again for another entry in this series, it was worth the wait! And hopefully, someday, you'll find the time and drive to review the whole series. I would love to hear your thoughts on each episode.
Also, just out of curiosity, who would you say is your favorite Pridelander (excluding the guard and Lion King Characters)?

I agree with everything you said. I love this series - especially in later Seasons.
It's cool that you worked as a zoo educator. I went to school for a Zookeeper job and have done volunteer/internship work with animals. Still don't have a Zookeeper job though.
If you would like to, I'd love to chat with you about The Lion Guard. If you're up for it.

When I first saw Return of the Roar, I thought it was really worth watching. I was very excited to hear Ernie Sabella returning as Pumbaa and most of all, I was very excited to hear James Earl Jones as mufasa again! It was so wonderful that they payed homage to The Lion King with the sun rising just like the beginning, and the sun shining on Pride Rock as it rises. It also had the score of This Land being played for a short time. That was truly beautiful.

I do wish they hadn’t included Christmas in the pridelands. As for Kiara’s character, I um figured her change is due to age….BUT in all honesty I wish they had mixed how she was at the start of LK2 and how she is in the show to balance it😅

I started watching this show about a month ago. I had heard about it a while ago, but I got too curious and started watching it. I was amazed at how much I actually like the show, and I'm not afraid to admit that as a 25 year old dude. The first time watching it through, it got some genuinely good laughs out of me. Yeah, it does get pretty gimmicky, but it is a kid's show. Some of the songs aren't great, but those are easy to skip over. I'm with you on Season 3 being the best one. I love the world building, and I love seeing the characters more grown up. I will say, its pacing is pretty poor though. I think they could've taken only 5 episodes to get to the Tree of Life after Battle for the Pride Lands, and then spent the rest of the time to focus on Kion's healing and his progressing friendship and romance with Rani. I love her character and I like them as a couple, but their romance was really rushed. I also would've liked to have seen Kion and the Guard interact more with the Night Pride outside of fending off Makucha's clan. Overall though, it's a good season. And a good show.

The pilot I do agree didn’t leave a good first impression with this show, however the series itself I did enjoy. Season 3 being the season I enjoyed the most, I just loved that they gave a good reason and setup for why Kion and the guard left the pridelands during the events of lion king 2’s timejump. Also the fact the series finale served as an epilogue was also a nice touch. The show also does actually have some pretty catchy songs, with some of my favorites being sisi ni sawa, my own way, baboons, lions overall, make you a meal, and the dolphin way. Overal this show wasn’t perfect but I think it does deserve to be in lion kings history of entertainment

I do like the show very much and i like that Kion had a multi varied team for the Guard. Each member has a endorable and amazing personality and all 6 had great connection and story through all 3 seasons.
I only wished that Anga would had made a member of the Guard right at the start. She could had been the Cariest or the loviest till Ono blinded his eye and then became the Keenest of Sight in Ono's approval. (I could see those 2 could have a sort of bond or Friend/Relationship in season 1 and 2)

I watched the episode with Jasiri first and the return of the roar…. I think the pilot was a little bit shaky since the way Kion and Bunga are introduced is um sudden😅 BUT….. at the same time this show expanded the world in a cool way despite some of the accidental continuity errors 🤷‍♀️ I have a very complicated love-hate thing with this show … just don’t forget to say it’s after Kiara first met Kovu in LK2 and before her first hunt. Season 3 is the one where the main characters actually age and overlap with the battle with Zira where the outsiders attacking is mentioned and they don’t mention Nuka’s fate in the end.

Honestly I actually like the pilot. It’s not on the levels of quality as friendship is magic part 1 and 2 or help wanted from SpongeBob, but I thought it did alright for a start to the series. And I gonna be honest, bunga never really bothered me. I found him to be pretty funny and served as a good foil to kion. Also there were moments where it truly showed they were best friends. Bunga was willing to stay friends with kion even if he turned evil. I won’t lie that friends to the end was bunga at his worst, but it’s no where near what Patrick Star would have done during the dark era of SpongeBob (5-first half of 9). All and all, I was never bothered by bunga at all.

"Where was he the whole time during the sequel" Idk why but I smirked the biggest smirk ever. As someone that's watched the entire show the series does make sense and It adds up, they did a shockingly good job when It came to the timeline 🤔
Season 1 & 2 take place after Lion King 1 but before 2 and Season 3 takes place before Lion King 2 but by the time they journey to the Tree of Life Lion King 2 started
"You throw In a character In the middle of an existing narrative and you expect us to just go with It"
    Yes. Yes they do LOL
Also I do agree that Rafiki should have done that Intro, I would've liked It so much better If they did but I'm not complaining. I enjoy Kion as a character and his development Is nice.
Also from my memory I'm pretty sure Scar killed his crew In secret but I'll have to rewatch the episode.

I just had a theory In regards to the plot hole regarding Scar's death back in "Rise of Scar"
Remember how in the first movie, some of the hyenas fled Pride Rock during battle of Pride Rock, before Simba took of to face Scar and the famous "Mr Pig" moment?
My theroy is that those particular hyenas weren't around when Scar double crossed them, or when the remaining hyenas eventually maulled him to death. That could explain why Janja stated that Scar died in the fire and not by his fellow hyenas, and why they still showed respect and loyalty to the lion when he returned.
Like I said, just a theory.

For me TLG was easily one of my favorite show. And it was my introduction to TLK lol. And because of that I was always so defensive on this show. Sure it’s not perfect but it did provide something pleasure definitely more than most show adaptations like BH6TS, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, etc. So it’s nice to have something new added to the franchise. It could have been better but it’s still a good show to watch. And yes season 3 is definitely the best season (the only nitpick I have for it is that I want that season to be a bit more longer).

I saw this show's first episode live on Disney Junior back in the day when it first came out. As a young child, it influenced me heavily, and I still love it to this day. True, it's not without its problems. But as someone who saw TLG before TLK, and didn't have any complaints about continuity, I think it has a lot of good to offer, even with its flaws. The characters, the world building, the backgrounds, the music, it all gave me a particular kind of lively energy that I still find it hard to replicate.
I hate season 3 with a burning passion though. I don't wanna come off as aggressive here, because it would be kinda stupid to get mad over a kids' show, but in my opinion...
The ending was terrible, Rani was terrible, the new characters were mostly terrible, the romance arcs were terrible, the villains were terrible, the Tree of Life was terrible, and the plot was terrible.
I'd go more into depth on each of these points, but then I'd have to write an entire essay to properly articulate all my complaints. Of course, this isn't to say you can't enjoy the season, but I personally don't. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to understand the themes, I dunno.

I almost completely agree with you about the series and the pilot itself, except one thing. Bunga IS a good character. I know it's very unpopular opinion, but I really do stick to it. He might be extremely stupid and annoying sometimes, but I just can't forget "Friends to the end" episode, when he said to Kion: "Even if you do turn evil, I'll still be your best friend". It is hard to say sometimes, but he is smart and reliable. He's just reckless, but he is not an idiot. He reminds me some kind of sociopath, that does what he does on purpose. Of course it's not true, but I think it's funny. But this is just his role, the whole Lion Guard couldn't be all so serious and resposible, that would be boring. The show just needed a character like that, and here's Bunga. And it's painful to see what they did to him in the end... The female Bunga? Seriously? He deserved much better than this.
I am really sorry for my english, but I like "Returning to Pride Rock" playlist so here's the comment for further promotion. You inspired me to leave a comment (on the foreign language) and to finish my own video about this topic. Thank you so much for content!

This might be an unpopular opinion. But when it comes to Lion King cannon, I often feel there is a lot of continuity issues with the series. Lion King 2 in regards to their being lions who supported Scar and the Lion Guard in regards to having magical roar and Scar attempting to overthrowing Mufasa with it and not getting banished for it. It's like... as much as I enjoy this show, I can't help but be bothered by some of these problems. I actually think that the Stories of Kopa do a better job at being consistant.
