I've owned two, one of them a Radio Shack model. It wore out and was replaced by the current Sangean version. The best part of this radio is it's flexibility. As location and conditions change, the parameters can be adjusted for optimal reception.
I bought this radio 18 years back that time the model no was ATS 404 it still works fantastic and looks identical to the 405 with some improvements great work by Sangean
Great radio and review. Yes have been wanting to get this radio for a while.I think it will be my next purchase. The 909 from Sangean looks excellent bit pricey This model might serve you well and it has unique features but is more affordable than 909. Great review as always.
Really enjoyed your review on this radio, been looking at buying one and after watching your review I decided to purchase it . I do own the sangean 909 and the quality is really great so i kind of made it a little easier to decided but did want to view some review on. The 405.
It looks like the ATS-505 ( my first digital receiver) with more features like AGC, bandwith switch. Beautiful! Unfortunately it lacks a knob dial. but another Sangean's goal.
Did not know they still made this one. I’ve only seen the ATS-505, and ATS-909-x. Sangean = quality ❗️ I’ve had the old 909, And SG-622 for over 10 years-had the PT-10 but gave it away. All excellent radios.
I have the next one up, a 505, great radio, worth the money I paid. Had it for years now. Wouldn't part with it. But if I see any shortwave radios at garage sales, I grab them.
I just bought one of these not too long ago. The interference I get with this is on Medium Wave AM and it comes from the radio's display. I know this because when you press the Freq/Time/Enter button the display goes momentarily blank, and when this happens the interference goes away. You might want to try this on your radio to see if that's what you're experiencing. It's a rather frustrating problem because Medium Wave AM reception on this radio is actually quite good, but the annoying display noise makes it hard to enjoy listening to weaker stations. On my radio this affects Medium Wave AM only, not shortwave.
How do batteries last on this radio? I have a Panasonic RF-B33 which is very similar to this but it doesn't lock in to any stations and no radio sound coming through the speakers. Only alarm sounds. Do you think it would be an expensive repair?
Hi Todd .. I just got a new ATS-405. Great radio .. thanks for the review! Quick question: on yours, does the signal meter NOT work when you tune in 1kHZ steps?
You can Call George in Tech support at Sangean USA +1-562-941-9900 Toll-Free: 888.SANGEAN (726-4326), it may be a firmware update that wasn't noted in the older manual.
Nice looking radio I have been interested in this radio from time to time, have seen mixed reviews concerning the MW reception, but your video demonstates that the radio is very good on MW. Looks like it actually outperforms the Tecsun radios such as the pl 310 and pl 380 on MW would you agree?
Is the radio you bought in the US market capable of receiving the Japanese FM band apportionment, 76-90 or 95 mHz? I asked Sangean the same question about the 909 without response. That capability would seem to be a no brainer for a world radio, but that doesn't make it true.
I'm really torn on what to get, I've been thinking I wanna spend between 100-200 on my first radio and these seem great, but I'm wondering if there's even better audio quality and more features I could get for my money

Volume control poor. Magic spray and sorted. Lovely little radio. Have the 909x and was pleasantly surprised. Great for field work with a longish wire. Nice video too.

I love this radio, it has features rarely found if at all...love the display lighting and performance. Great review!
Thank you Chuck. Great little MW performer for sure.
With your salesmanship and Amazon reducing the price to $63.97 I wasn't able to hold myself back and ordered one of these from Amazon today.

Great to know the history of this radio. Thank you for sharing.
Cool review! Is the 909 worth the extra money?
Superb radio, and superb review, if this radio had SSB it would be a killer buy, and it is quality personified 👍 Tam.
Thank you Tam. SSB would be nice, but I'm finding out that this little radio is a monster on the medium wave...which is where I want to be :)

Excellent review. Very thorough. Thanks!
I look forward to the band scans. I like it.
A medium wave band scan is planned for this week.. its a little monster.

It is a great radio on AM. Let me know how it works for you.
My favorites Radio since 1993
It has been five years since, I think the Sangean ATS405 deserves a daytime medium wave band scan. It beats everything!
Mine had issues with the buttons, sent it in, got it back with the same problems. Sold it off.
It looks like the ATS-505 ( my first digital receiver) with more features like AGC, bandwith switch. Beautiful! Unfortunately it lacks a knob dial. but another Sangean's goal.
505 better radio than this one.
A no buy for me without a tuning knob…. 👎
Hi Todd, how is the music playing through the radio when you do the sample audio?
Did not know they still made this one. I’ve only seen the ATS-505, and ATS-909-x.
Sangean = quality ❗️
I’ve had the old 909,
And SG-622 for over 10 years-had the PT-10 but gave it away.
All excellent radios.
This 405 sounds good. I'm enjoying the MW on this one.
Great video. I've noticed that the FM performance improves a bit if you switch to FM mono, even when listening through the speaker.
Thank you Peter, without your recommendation I would have missed this one.
I have the next one up, a 505, great radio, worth the money I paid. Had it for years now. Wouldn't part with it. But if I see any shortwave radios at garage sales, I grab them.
I got one this fall . Great radio. Good reception on MW and SW , but can anyone recommend a good noise filter to combat interference?

No external antenna socket. Only complaint. Great radio😄

What about the shortwave side? You said it was the same as your Tecsun 310?
I have the Sangean ATS 505 and Icom 7300 and I’m still looking for the perfect radio. ☺️
Cool video how is the sensitivity and selectivity on this radio on FM and AM
is this model or the 505 the equivalent to the radio shack 200629 that was on sale back on mid-2014 for $32.00?
From what I was able to search. It was the 505 with SSB. That was one heck of deal back then.
can you attach their aux antenna?
Yes, you would clip it to the antenna mast.
It says in the directions after charging the flashing red will stay on. Mine just stops flashing?

The sangean ats 909x is a great radio but expensive
In expancive radio areas like yours or in breaktime at the office in town . Thats the one to have in your case .

It outperforms them...there will be a medium wave band scan this week :)
todderbert
Oh great Will be looking forward to that. Thank you for introducing us to this nice looking radio.
You are welcome! You'll have to thank Peter Atkinson for mentioning this radio.
Is this a good radio? Does it catch the AM wave? Can an external antenna be connected to it?
How is the sensitivity and selectivity on the FM band
Not the best, this radio is built for MW.
Sangean ATS 405 vs Xhdata D 808 which is better?
405 is the tuner's radio. People have their choices, I like the lighter and smaller XHDATA, but the quality of the Sangean lives on.
@@todderbert Thank you
Hello. If you remove the battery, will the stored stations remain ?
Yes.
Is the radio you bought in the US market capable of receiving the Japanese FM band apportionment, 76-90 or 95 mHz? I asked Sangean the same question about the 909 without response. That capability would seem to be a no brainer for a world radio, but that doesn't make it true.
Just checked the radio and it can not. Only standard 87.5 to 108mHz. It does say in the manual it varies from market to market.
Thanks for checking, much appreciated.👍
I don’t agree with earlier review on which I wrote , let he know how you fare here
This Sangean is sure a nice looking rig but it'd be sweeter with a manual tuning wheel and line in. If it did I'd try it.
I had my eyes on this radio for a while, but the fact it's missing a tuning wheel/dial was a deal breaker..
I'm finding that I don't miss it.
I'm really torn on what to get, I've been thinking I wanna spend between 100-200 on my first radio and these seem great, but I'm wondering if there's even better audio quality and more features I could get for my money
