  • The Sangean ATS-909X portable shortwave radio has to be one of my finest single side band receivers in the house. It is a breeze to tune in HAM radio operators. The AM band is strong also, bringing in daytime distant stations in with ease.

    Speaker audio is decent.
    Home/World clock.
    Three Alarms.
    Nice buttons.
    Good build quality.
    Bright white side lit LCD display.

    Best shortwave I have ever owned is the Drake sw8.With just a 200 ft wire thrown high up in a tree it got EVERYTHING. Sangeans are actually very decent low to medium range radios.

    Great detailed review!
    The only thing that would make it even better is, a test with an outdoor antenna. An end fed long wire would do.
    This would expose the true capabilities of this receiver.
    I have the Tecsun PL880 as well and, side by side for shortwave reception, I prefer the Sangean as it has a better tone for communication.
    On voice setting (news), it's crystal clear with any strong signal. The PL880 on the other hand has a sound more suited to music at the cost of absolute clarity on voice.
    They both are great radios and it comes down to personal preference which one to get.
    Thanks for a calm and sane video without hysterics!

    Nice 'little' beast! I had a Tecsun PL-660 some years ago, but I had to return it after a couple of weeks because it just totally died; I loved it, but the failure kind of put me off these kinds of radios. I love SW/MW/LW and building antennae for pulling in distant transmitters.. perhaps this is the one? I'm recently inspired by my first Sangean experience (DT-800), so perhaps, perhaps. Great review, thanks Todderbert.

    The ATS-909X is a VERY underrated unit. The complaint many have is that it is missing
    an AM sync detector, however for the number of times people actually use them it won't normally be missed, unless you spend all your time doing DXing. The other is that it requires an external antenna to perform well, but once you do hook it up to even a reel antenna or length of copper wire it really shines! Quality is very good, QUALITY CONTROL IS EXCELLENT OVERALL, much better than the competition, and listening to SSB like amateur stations is excellent too. It's a good value for the money, I consider this radio
    a near modern day equivalent of the classic Panasonic RF-2200 or RF-2800.

      It's odd that Sangean never really pushed this radio in the marketplace from it's debut. It should have been a much bigger player, but only became an afterthought. Weird. For any of the issues people might have had with this radio, there was a slightly modified unit from a company called Radio Labs they named the modifications
      "Clear Mod", and you buy the Sangean ATS-909x directly from Radio Labs.

    Thanks for the review! I'm on my 2nd 909X, this time in black as my original one lost the tuning capability. The knob just spun without changing the frequency. Sangean couldn't fix it because they changed the part & the old part is no longer available. It must have been a poor design originally. My radio was about 5 years old. I bought refurbished one from them in black. I use it with 3 antennas, 2 outside & 1 inside with a 3 antenna switch & through an antenna tuner which can make a world of difference. The old power supply doesn't work in the newer 909X radios. There was a Federal order to change the supply using their specs. Go figure. I'm seriously thinking of getting another refurb in white. My old Yaesu FRG 7700 is on its last legs.

      I had a 909X for about 5 years until the tuner went out. Called Sangean CA & they said I should ship it to them & it would cost $30 to repair it. A few days after they got it they called me & said the new part was no longer available since they changed it (must have been an ongoing prob) but I could buy a refurbished one for $120 I did just that & am now happy again with my 909X in great operation. I'm almost thinking of getting another refurb. I had a white one but got it in black this time. I'll get the other refurb in white. Good DX! Glenn KB9IN.

There are 10,000 yahoos posting info about this radio that is useless at best and WRONG at worst. Thank you so much for the quality video. Glad to hear. I just purchased one again myself. I sold mine off last year because of the jog wheel bothered me. Then I read that many users say it loosens up with time and becomes easier to use. It is one of the finest portables I own.

      @@todderbert The good thing about listening to shortwave b'cast is that most are in 5 KHz steps, LOL. I listen to utilities.,military & hams often & their channel spacing (if any) can be anything. That wears that tight tuning wheel in fast, LOL. Waiting for my 2nd refurbished 909X to come. This one will be white like the one that lost its tuning ability & was replaced with my black refurb.

    • @ambush1sg
      @ambush1sg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To add to my post above I received my 2nd refurbished 909X, but although I ordered it in white they sent another black one. Not a problem. My 1st refurb cost $120 maybe because Sangean kept my original 909X , the one they couldn't repair. The tuning knob was ungodly tight but smoothed out with use in a short while. The 2nd one had a fairly smooth knob so I imagine it was an actually refurbished used one They both looked brand new - no mars or scratches. The price I paid for the 2nd one was $157.06, free delivery & 3 month (min) warranty. The 1st one was $120. Both work identical. I'm glad I marked the inside of the battery compartment with #1 & #2 & the date I received them, LOL. For that money I feel I got 2 excellent radios at a good price. Both refurbs came with the carrying case, reel antenna, earphones & an instruction manual, just like brand new ones do.

    • @ambush1sg
      @ambush1sg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@todderbert My 1st refurb came with a very stiff tuning knob. I received it on 20 Oct 19 & now there is no hint of any detent while my 2nd refurb came on 6 Jan 20 with again a stiff knob. It's fairly loose now with a little detent left. There is some but it doesn't bother me in the least. Bear in mind that I'm retired & can play radio all day, every day, LOL. Superb radios especially with an external antenna attached.

    I agree with Tam. Today is one of the finest and best built multiband receivers of the market. The lasts versions have a slightly better reception using the whip, but it shines using a piece of wire and doesn't suffer overloading using longwires. It is a little overpriced? I don't know. I know mine will last a lot of years working while most of receivers will die 🤷‍♂️

    • @japerry75
      @japerry75 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Considering that it runs about 200 dollars on Amazon and other radio retailers plus or minus 10 dollars, I think it sounds like a pretty good deal because it seems that the 909 I bought years ago as a DX 398 same branded radio but under Radio Shack was about 160 dollars at that time and that's been nearly 20 years.

    I would add : * be careful with whip antenna (if you place wear and tear on the antenna by rotating the ball it will eventually snap. I extend the whip and leave it in a horizontal position)
    * a great feature of this radio is when you store a number of frequencies assigned to one radio station or other designation such as a meter band, the radio station will auto tune to the strongest frequency when a specific “page” is chosen.
    * just to repeat a correction made in an earlier comment, you CAN store a frequency or group of frequencies and assign the name of the station for shortwave!!!!!!!!!

    A great video but two unanswered questions: 1. Is the included power supplies linear or digital? From the noise warning notice you mentioned, I suspect is digital. If so, Sangean could do better. Yeah, I know there are batteries...
    2. When it was around, years ago, the Passport to World Band Radio guide said it was a battery eater. That was for its predecessor, the 909. How is battery life per charge on this new, improved model? Thanks!

      I don't notice any RFI from the AC adapter. It has a choke on it, plus I keep the radio as far away from it as possible. As far as batteries go, I have not run through a set yet. I'm guessing you will want to use rechargeables.

In terms of sensitivity on short wave when using an external antenna, which do you think is better, the Sangean ATS-909x, the Eton Elite Executive or the Skywave C Crane? I am leaning towards buying the Sangean, but I understand from other reviewers that the Eton is also very good.

    I don't mind manually tuning this radio. Put it on it's back stand, put two fingers under the right side of the radio and use your thumb. If you use your fingers I agree it does not work well, probably why they call it a thumb wheel. I read comments on another review where people said the 880 tunes easier. I own both and the tuning knobs on the 880 are slow compared to the thumb wheel on the 909.

    Right out of the box brand new with fresh batteries I had error eeprom. And it was frozen. Ac power with batteries removed was the same. The reset button on the bottom only allowed me to get the same result on powering it up. A call to sangeans help line was useful. The gentleman suggested removing power batteries and ac to allow the internal battery to drain. He recommended 5 hours minimum. That did the trick. It fired right up as one would expect. I called the helpline to thank them and clarify if it was something I did wrong and how to avoid that malfunction to prevent it from happening again. He stated it's like a computer and I should allow the internal battery to drain once every six months. Also if I'm over zealous and tuning via the dial too quickly it has restarted at least twice in one week. The time had to be set on each occurrence. I love the performance of the radio but it is very temperamental. Am I the only one with these issues?

      Update. After Extensive use I have found this radio to be both very reliable and enjoyable. The previously mentioned idiosyncrasies have not returned. I have logged an amateur on Lower ssb from Fiji with just the ant 60 and I'm looking forward to Halloween as most Pirates will be active at that time. FM reception is so much better than any other radio I have owned. Moving the antenna even just a bit and I can listen to either a Maine station or a Cape Cod station in Massachusetts on 107.5. I can easily receive multiple distant AM stations. Overall a definite keeper.
      Keep up on delivering the most excellent of reviews todderbert. I am a subscriber for life.

    What we need is radios that use 18650 batteries, not the wimpy alkaline AS batteries that you throw away after they go dead. I have experimented with 14500 LiPo batteries, and they do work well, but a single 18650 battery would give tens of hours of listening, and several
    spares are easy and compact to carry. Try to review a radio that uses LiPo batteries, please.

    Would you be interested in using/comparing my RadioLabs Clear mod ATS-909x to your selection. I find the receiver to be equal more or less to my PL-880 and 680 in most regards when used only with the internal antennas. I started using the 909x in Iraq when my E1 died. I haven't been able to compare it to a stock 909x and am curious to see how it compares. I'm very happy with the RadioLabs 909x but would be happy to loan it to you for a few weeks to see how it stacks up to others. I use it many while I travel but use ham gear at home so I wouldn't miss it. Let me know.

    This radio is good but sorely outdated. It is DX398 circa 1990 with different buttonology. The display screen and storage is identical. I am a big fan of the radio and also don’t believe in fixing things that are not broken but this radio is over 30 years old. It would be a great review to compare any circuitry changes between them. Doubtful there are any at all. The functions are identical.
