I am extremely happy with the PR-D19 performance on FM and AM. It responds very well to a Tecsun loop putting this small radio in contention with some of my bigger radios like the GE SR1. I place the loop adjacent to the PR-D19 on a 16" lazy Susan and wow! I select a channel such as 740 Zoomer (about 1,000 km) peak the loop to max signal by listening to speaker noise, then rotate the lazy Susan. Very effective! 2 AM bands, 2 FM bands for a total of 20 presets is sweet. Clock, alarm, twin speakers, small form factor and not to heavy. The FM antenna is about the best out there. Very solid. The bandwidth filter is one only thing I do not dig. It simply makes everything muddy. Who cares! Great radio. Thank you, ToddErbert!

Thank you David. The D19 is part of my FM DX setup. I have a Tecsun Q3 recorder hooked up to it and the radio tuned to an open frequency waiting for the elusive E-Skip. Found quite a few this year. Glad your enjoying yours :)

Thanks Todd for your reviews, they are the best on the tube. I did want to share however that I purchased the PR-D19 and was very disappointed in the audio. There was almost no discernible separation on FM stereo with the front speakers. Also very little highs or mid-range fidelities, and about the worst I've ever heard using a quality set of earbuds. And earbuds it was nothing but Lows with no mids or highs. I may have gotten one bad apple, because every Sangean radio I have ever owned and still own has fantastic audio. I do own the WR 22wl and just recently purchased the WR 12, which has such incredible sound I hope that you are able to do it a review on this radio. Thanks again for the best reviews out there.
Well my friend, I bought this radio last week - all excited to get it and enjoy it's many cool features you have highlighted. I got the radio on Saturday. I opened it, put in 4 AA batteries, turned it on and began to scan the bands. Within 5-10 minutes, I started to notice issues. If I hit scan, the radio might tune to the next station - but no audio. Silence. Maybe their off the air? Next scanned station: silence. If I turned the volume up, it would get SUPER loud and freeze. Had to eject one of the batteries and start over. OK, maybe a weird glitch. Tried it again - with the same results within 10 minutes. Returned it and Amazon quickly shipped the replacement at no cost to me and I got that today. Literally turned it on, played 1 song via my C Crane FM Transmitter and then began to scan the FM band: you guessed it. Same results. The radio froze up nor more than 10 minutes after I began using it. The first Sangean I bought, and at this point I won't buy another one from them. That's TWO PR-D19's in 5 days. I'm sending this one back as well and will opt for something else. Quite disappointing. I've bought a lot of radios and never have seen anything like this.

You are getting an awesome radio. If you use it a lot I recommend rechargeable AAs, and buy the AC Adapter. I use mine all Summer to try and catch sporadic FM e-skips.
Great review. This is a sweet radio. I've had mine since September and it's become my go to radio for most everyday listening. You commented that another radio (I forget which one) did slightly better on FM. Try using the narrow bandwidth on FM. At first I did not think it did much because the sound doesn't change as it does on AM but it makes the radio far more selective and totally cleans up adjacent channel interference on a couple stations for me where I have a strong local signal next to a distant signal. For the price I believe this is the best radio on the market right now. And, you're right, it out performs the PR-D18 not only on sound but also reception on both AM and FM. I've compared them side-by-side.
The PR-D15, Eton Field BT and the CC Radio EP-Pro are my best FM performers. This radio is very close to hanging with the big boys, and probably will with that FM filter.
i find your reviews complete and in depth and a must watch , Sangean radios as a rule are always of hifg quality, but and there is always a but , Sangean stop makng your radios with a high gloss plastic finish which shows finger prints etc. how about a flat matte finish , best to you and all !

I just sent a friend of mine a Tecsun R9012 and a Sony ICF-P36 for his birthday. Saw him on Facebook and he had been using a very tiny micro Kaito to listen to AM that looked like it was being held together with tape. I had already tested the radios for months before sending them and know they work very well. Always order a radio and test it first before giving it to someone. Quality control is really bad in Chinese factories.
The Walton's tv program had a show about two children visiting from England. And one of the Walton boy's had a crude shortwave set-up communicating with a child from England. ( Episode The Children's Carol.) During WW 2
Another excellent review. I have the 18 - my only complaint is you can't set the default to show frequency all the time. Even the PR-D5 and 15 default to one specific display. I find that really annoying. Otherwise, they're great radios.

I’m just now revisiting my love for portable radios, and my only portables at the moment are a Grundig M400 (that I’m not happy with), and a Retekess TR614 that I purchased after watching your video on it. For my next radio, I’m torn between the Sangean PR-D19, and the CC Pocket. Both are at a similar price point, and scratch different itches for me. I love the portability of the CC Pocket, and it seems to be everything the M400 isn’t for me. On the other hand, I’m picky about sound which is why I find the PR-D19 so appealing.
The D19 will use batteries, so have rechargeables handy. Buy the AC Adapter if you plan to use it all the time. I like the D19. The CC Pocket is great for on the go, walking, camping, ect.

You can use D to AA adapters, each D adapter holds 3 AA batteries, but you can just use one AA in each adapter and that will work, I had a PR-D4W but just recently sold it.
I sent the PR-D4W back as it picked up every electrical noise around the house and the AM audio was very muddy. Sure, it pulled in weaker signals but I had so much of a hard time trying to understand the call letters on AM. After that, I didn't bother looking into the FM. I'm certain Sangean has that right but I need AM to work well.
As always another great radio review. Was wondering if this radio has better reception on AM and FM than the PR D18. The simple bandwidth control on the radio seems to work very well.
Yes - as an owner of both the PR-D18 and the PR-D19, I can attest to the fact that the 19 gets better reception on both AM and FM. Even without the wide/narrow bandwidth settings, the 19 is more selective on FM, and when you switch it to narrow bandwidth FM the 19 is able to make a listenable signal out of a couple of stations I can't hear well at all on the 18. On AM, it is the greater sensitivity of the 19 that will make the difference between "barely audible" and "weak but listenable" for stations that are putting through a very marginal signal in your location. On AM the narrow bandwidth setting will cut down on noise, as well, at the cost of making the audio a bit muddy.
I don’t know if you are a younger version of me or if I am a clone of you. I love radio and collect them. I purchased PR-D7 and PRD-19. Did I need them? Not really but they are very nice.
Todd - comparing the Sangean PR-D7, PR-D18 and PR-D19 which has sound quality most similar to the PR-D4W? I have a few radios that I cannot listen to due to my sensitivity to high-pitched sounds and the perceived "tinny" sound. The PR-D4W sounds great (to me). Thank you!
It is fun to use and gets on station fast. I still enjoy using my CCrane EP Pro and 2E. They have some nice bass/treble controls. The Sangean entertains on FM, that stereo sound is a symphony to the ears.
My guess about the ac adapter is its like anything with the hd-16 I got awhile back using the wrong adapter litterally caused it to blow up the batteries.

Oh no a radio without a tuning knob. Just doesn’t have the feel of a real short wave radio. Tuning knobs are indispensable on a short wave radio. Nice in-depth review.
I'm not sure, but there doesn't seem to be enough room for one. Sangean would make sure to advertise a 200mm ferrite antenna as a feature if this radio had it. I may have to tear it down to see how big the antenna is. I figure it is at least four inches in size.

Not the best, it has a low tone that can be muddy at times, depending on the program if I remember correctly. Most Sangean radios have this issue on the AM band while using headphones.

There is no excuse why these companies don't make a 1 khz step mandatory on every radio I don't want a radio that's limited to 10 kzh .it's flawed limited when tuning unless you live out in the country.sad this radio would be a serious dxer but it's flawed to me .thanks for the review

I knew about the PR-D18 but I had no idea they made a stereo version! Very nice, especially in white and blue!

Nice sounding radio! And it's sensitive enough on FM that I can pick up most of the local stations I want without even extending the antenna.
It is an FM beast, the selectivity is mind blowing. I love this radio and use it during the summer as my FM DX machine.
Best reception and sound quality out of a small radio. Only wish it had the weather band. I still love it.

The AM & FM reception is better on the 19. There is the bandwidth control, AUX-In, and quick access preset buttons on top.

The D7 is close to the D4W in audio. The others are not far off.

Does it really draw 1 amp? Seems like the batteries wouldn't last long.
Unfortunately no RDS so not super good for dxing but yes the sound is great
I would think he would want a radio with an external antenna connection for FM DX.

My thoughts were the bandwidth selection on both AM and FM would make it more selective than the d 7? I'm guessing it probably has better sensitivity.

Given the close relationship between Sangean and C.Crane, I'm curious if this radio incorporates the twin coil (Justice) ferrite antenna?
I'm not sure, but there doesn't seem to be enough room for one. Sangean would make sure to advertise a 200mm ferrite antenna as a feature if this radio had it. I may have to tear it down to see how big the antenna is. I figure it is at least four inches in size.
There would be a separate tuner for am needed if it were incorperating that design.

This radio for a room filling sound, the 200X for a headphone pocket radio on the go. The D19 will have better reception.

How is the headphone experience on AM?
Not the best, it has a low tone that can be muddy at times, depending on the program if I remember correctly. Most Sangean radios have this issue on the AM band while using headphones.

Change Radio Todderbert to 87.9 FM. 87.9 is rarely used.

How's the AM band DX reception?
There is no excuse why these companies don't make a 1 khz step mandatory on every radio I don't want a radio that's limited to 10 kzh .it's flawed limited when tuning unless you live out in the country.sad this radio would be a serious dxer but it's flawed to me .thanks for the review

Yes, on the left hand side next to the DC input. It is also stereo.
