How do training decisions affect your injury?

- When a runner is dealing with pain, knowing the right training variables to manipulate is crucial. My biggest priority in the clinic is to keep runners running.
Lucky for you, the relationship between form, speed, and surface was examined in this recent study.
Researchers examined this relationship in this study.
They examined peak load, impulse, and damage on three common injury locations (patellofemoral joint, tibia, and Achilles tendon) across different speeds, surface gradients, and cadences.
19 subjects ran at
Five different speeds (2.78, 3, 3.33, 4 and 5 ms)
Four different grades (-6, -3, +3, and +6)
Three cadences (preferred, -10%, + 10%).
And what did they find?
Increased cadence reduced damage at all locations
Increased running speed increased loading at the knee
Uphill running increased tibia and achilles load while decreasing knee load
Downhill running decreased tibia and achilles load and increased knee load
Knowing what stresses your injury more or less is crucial during running rehab. This study highlights critical variables that can be manipulated to get runners back to 100% as quickly as possible.
