Hi ...you have become a dear friend over these past 18 months...we also had a long cold winter here in Quebec. I think we are kindred spirits...I do talk to you even though you cannot hear me. Now we have beautiful warm sunny days...garden going in..I go to town (10 min drive) about every 2 weeks for groceries and truly get excited when I get bargains too! I also get excited when I make batches of soups and batches of cookies. Every day has times of joy...worries come and go...but friends like you are an uplifting visit in my day. Thanks so much!!

Always love your videos landing in my feed. I'm a regular food prepper as I usually work full time out of the home with a 1hr commute each way. I've been using these tips (handed down from Mum 💞) and also save the onion peelings, pepper centres, cauliflower/broccoli stems, bottom of the crisper drawer veggies, peeling and trimmings from any fresh veggies used during the week etc to regularly make stock. I save them in a bag in the freezer and add them to the slow cooker either with leftover beef bones, chicken carcass or just the veggies on their own. I make soup every week and use the stock in casseroles too so I've usually have one of my slow cookers brewing a broth on average once a month. I reuse the same bag once it's empty giving it a quick wash in between uses to keep it healthy.
Did you know that adding an apple to your potatoes helps them last longer?
Even eggshells don't go to waste - they can be crushed up and sprinkled around plants or along a door line to stop slugs and snails eating your plants and break down and mix in with the soil to help fertilise (just one of their waste benefits).
A folded piece of kitchen paper or a linen napkin in the crisper drawer or tucked inside the packaging of delicate veggies such as salad leaves, tomatoes helps to soak up excess moisture and keeps them a little longer.
Does Dixie eat veggies or fruits? I have a German Shepherd and she adores a lot of fruit and veggies and is regularly by my side if it allows her to have tomatoes, cucumber, apples or pears (her favourites but she's not fussed) .... although don't worry she doesn't have onions or any of the others that aren't good for our furry friends xx

    Hi Emmy,
Hear me out on the onions, I have a lot of experience with this method.
Of course, you'll have to adjust it for your situation.

Omg! I never thought to buy produce on sale and freeze. I’m going to do that next time I see peppers on sale.
I cook a lot of peppers throughout the year but some weeks the prices are crazy.
Before cutting onions, light a candle right next to the cutting board. You will see that your eyes will not tear up. I learned that from martha Stewart and it works every time.

Just hint to anyone who doesn't have a food saver yet, I buy flip and fold baggies very cheaply at Dollar General. Thank you so much for sending me over to this video, Emmy! Tons of useful information - I would never have thought to use leftover corn cobs to add flavour to stocks! And I think making stocks and/or soups on a regular basis in the crockpot makes me happy. I shall be making herby dumplings and green split pea soup (with some cumin for an interesting flavour and some liquid smoke too) next, I think. :-) Thank you - and how lovely to see Dixie starting off this video. @@FrugalMoneySaver, just pulled my scale out for something one wouldn’t really think of a scale for but it works great! I weigh my mayonnaise instead of measuring it in a measuring cup. Much less mess! For example, I need 1/2 cup of mayonnaise for a recipe I am making. The label tells me that 1 T of mayonnaise is 13 grams. Thus, 1/2 cup = 8 T = 104 grams. Takes a bit of math but no mess of measuring in a measuring cup!

Beautiful dog. F.y.i. frugal dog treat we tried and thought you might want to know about. We gave the dogs a cup of the Pure Balance dried dog food almost every day as a treat. They have four flavor options to choose from. About five dollars for a four pound bag. One bag is enough for almost a month or longer depending on the number of dogs you have. The salmon blend was their favorite. This brand is sold at Walmart for the best best. It comes in the black paper bags.

This video could have been made in my house. I prepare the majority of food that comes in for frig or freezer. Almost everything in my the freezer is flash frozen. And I keep a ledger of pantry and freezer items. My family thinks it's crazy but I know it's smart. After watching this I hope more try it

I enjoyed this episode with you and took notes on how to do food preps on larger amounts of veggies than needed right away. During this pandemic, I've been relying more on my own cooking rather than eating out. Restaurants are still not open here in Toronto and surrounding areas because they're all major hot spots for the virus. In this day and age, being short on time made us veer away from home cooking. Now we're so blessed to have someone like you to help us easily go back to old ways of doing things. Not only more economical but healthier in the long run. Thank you so much for your caring and giving nature translating into benefit for the rest of us.

I purchase frozen diced onion. I simply can’t manage how painful it is for me to chop them. I guess it’s a splurge, but it’s the way it needs to be if I’m going to cook with onions. :-)

Thanks so much for watching Mary! I take a tiny piece of paper and write what it is and tape it to the lid. This way I can take the paper off turned it over write some thing else on the other side if I change what’s in it.

Don't you need to blanche vegs before freezing? I see you did Blanche the corn...but I thought a Blanche was only for 2 minutes.... A bundt pan is ingenious! I'm so impressed with you use everything up! Good on ya!

    • @FrugalMoneySaver

Corn is usually 4 minutes but I did five. You can Google how to prepare veggies for the freezer. Each veggie is different.
