    Just a note on the comparison footage: The Mavic Mini seems to lack dynamic range, blowing out a lot of the highlight areas. I expect this will be fixed by DJI when the Fly app comes out of beta with the first big update the drone receives.

      Hopefully they’ll add some manual control for video. I wish they would up the 40mbs bit rate but then like you said it’s in M air territory. Not sure if I would use it for paid work, but as I said on Bill and others channels is that I think it’s the perfect addition to a travel kit of my Sony RX100 V, and a iPad Pro. I was going to pull the “impulse” purchase on release day but they just pre released it. I think I will buy it though. I’m always amazed at how convenient and the video quality is on my RX100. Hope you’re well Billy and enjoy your coming up thanksgiving break.

      Not sure if you noticed and chose not to mention it when comparing sizes, but the Mavic Mini actually has the same footprint as the Mavic Air when unfolded. So it's smaller than the Spark when folded, but as big as the Air when unfolded. That's a big deal for it to have such a wide base considering it's light weight.

      You can definitely tell the difference in images, obviously with the spark you’re able to control the shutter speed and exposure so the Mavic Mini images look blown out as you said

      I have both. The range is nice on the Mavic Pro but the Mini actually shoots better video despite being 2.7K vs 4K. The Mavic Pro always had micro-stuttering issues when panning and the Mini is a lot smoother. I think a better upgrade when it comes to video quality would be from Spark to Mavic Air.

    DJI Spark advantages over the Mavic Mini:
    - faster,
    - much more manual control and settings,
    - very high quality FHD image (easy smooth edit),
    - perfect colors out of the box - no need to color grade etc.,
    - active track
    - front sensors
    - more rigid and sturdy body.
    Mavic Mini Advantages over the Spark:
    - slightly higher output 2.7k vs FHD (not as much difference as you might think thou!) still a bit more details
    - longer flight time on one battery (30min vs 14 min) - twice much
    - 249g. vs 300g for some it might be advantage
    - 3 axis gimbal compared to 2 axis + 1 axis digital
    (not so much of a difference if you are not panning too often) still 3ax always bit better than two axis gimbal) - said that
    Spark footage is also buttery smoth Spark is like 7/10 while Mavic Mini is 9/10.
    Similarities:
    Both very small
    Both great footage
    Both similarily priced
    Both similar distance and connectivity althou Spark can be modified with app to CE and FCC mode.
    If you have Spark I wouldn't consider Mavic Mini as a upgrade. I would rather keep the spark or sold it and get Mavic 2 Pro / Air / Zoom.. or even old Mavic Pro 1.

      I have to disagree. Unless the 60fps is absolutely necessary i think the spark is a better value. Spark has more Sensors, faster, tougher, more controls on remote and more options for active track etc.
      Plus it's honestly like a tank. This thing is tough i've crashed mine twice and all it's ever needed was a prop change which can be done in 5 seconds with no tools.

    Flight time , range and camera quality can be good reasons to upgrade to mavic mini from spark. But mavic mini cannot take panorama , bracketing or shallow focus which my little sparky does . (my most liked photos are usually panorama photos, sorry little mavic mini) And for the new users, obstacle ovaidance is tooooo important . The obstacle avoidence saved my ass for a lot of times. • @sralmas

      I think it depends on what you want. No Active Track, Gesture Control or ability to control without a remote are deal killers for me as I use my these feature on my Spark and Mavic Air all of the time. It's usually why I decide to leave my Anafi at home. When I am out on the golf course on vacation (or even my home course) and want to shoot some quick video of playing out a hole with my wife and/or buddies, I don't want to pull out a case and start dealing with a remote. Hand launch my Spark within seconds, wave it away from my and it's following me down the fairway and recording the whole thing. That's just not going to happen with the Mini. If I want more control without a remote, I'll bring the Mavic Air. It takes a little more time to get it off the ground but still not fussing with a remote. Without some firmware and software updates, the Mini is just a downgrade FOR MY USE.

    • @-Burb

      Scott Almas
      Yeah I see what you’re saying. It would be cool if they added some of that stuff to the mavic mini, especially active track. I feel like gesture control is kind of a gimmick, I used it once and never used it again. But the active track was always really cool to me. I think the mavic mini still has some of the modes like dronie, rocket, circle, and stuff like that though.

    • @AntlerAssassinTakovich
      @AntlerAssassinTakovich 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Superpope69 thank you. Yes we are well aware of the rules and regs regarding drone use during hunting season. They cannot be used to scout property you’re actively hunting during season and if the drone is flown over said property then it must be a period of not less than 24 hours until you may Hunt the property. We only use them for B-roll production. In no way do we use them to our advantage in a hunting situation.

    • @sralmas
      @sralmas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      SquiDragon I am really glad I stuck with gesture in terms of training myself to get used to using it. It has made selfies and short follow me videos much more spontaneous. It felt gimmicky to me also but honestly it was my gateway to the Mavic Air. I already had an Anafi but saw the benefits of hand controls and wanted something of Anafi quality but with hand control.

    My experience with the mini vs spark after owning each of them since launch, and with the latest firmware:
    Mini: Everything I want out of a drone. Premium, better image/video quality, stable, easy to control, good flight range, VERY good battery life. No Activetrack or obstacle avoidance, but I never used that anyway. This drone is now faster than the in the latest firmware update.

    One huge advantage the spark has over the mini is that it can be modded, inside and out. I have a black silicone cover and with NLD, I tilted the angle to 58 degrees and the ascend descend to 10 and 8. As far as the video the spark is a shade or two dimmer, but I think the EV adjustment on the mini if reduced will match the spark. I will keep my spark but will buy the mini due the longer flight time. I hope it can be modded like the spark. The spark is more durable in a crash, the folding on the mini look fragile but looks like they will be easier to replace, because yes I will fly the mini in sports mode and I will crash eventually.

    Thanks Billy. Informative and precise as usual. I honestly cannot see much difference in the photos or videos taken on either device but you are a skilled pilot who knows how to get the best out of the Spark. I have learned to fly my Spark taking account of the limitations of the 2 axis gimble and the video looks smooth now. I also feel some loyalty to Sparky because it has survived some serious crashes and I may be wrong here but the Mini looks flimsy and that gimble is vulnerable and replacing the props is a pain.

    A huge thing for me that no one is talking about is the removal of the usb port on the remote. Which means you can't plug a ipad/ipad mini into it. Basically you are forced to use your phone. For me I have an iPhone 6Plus which I am not willing to take out of it's case and when any iPhone Plus model is in a case it is too large to fit properly in the small remote handles. Plus I just like using a bigger screen like an iPad Mini.

    if your experienced with Drones and just want something more portable than your expensive mavic pro, then I think the best option is the mavic mini, good video quality, long flight time, its almost perfect for on the go filming. The reason why I say you need to be experienced is because it doesn't have any of the "beginner" sensors like obstacle avoidance etc. So you can actually crash into things, so you do need skill to fly this thing, having manual controls makes filming perfect you can do what ever you want with it with out the controls getting in the way and taking over.

    Not having active subject tracking and obstacle avoidance sensors on the new mini are major deletions from the spark. As someone said, Mini is not much of an upgrade, more like a tradeoff. For my plans to use outdoors, wakeboarding/wakesurfing and biking, I'm leaning towards the spark. Fymore package gives you extra 30 mins flight time before having to recharge.

      @Karlj2222 I don't believe they missed any point at all, many people don't want or don't feel the need to register, it's not much, however, it could still put a lot off the hobby, when all they want to do is fly something... this opens it up for many people, end of the day, that's it's intention, to get around registration, so if you already have a spark, then really, you don't need the mini.
      I had to stop flying for a long time due to health reasons, but overall have flown RC for 40 years, and imho, registration is totally unnecessary, I'm starting to be able to get out slightly more now, and will get the mini and sell all my other larger drone stuff.

    I will wait for the Mini 2 or Mini Pro. It is lacking to the point that it is not worth switching from the Spark.. Even though the DJI GO 4 app doesn't offer waypoints, the Spark can use Red Waypoints Pro for waypoint missions that can be created offline and thus utilizing flight time more efficiently (DJI could turn on wayponts in the DJI GO 4 app, it is built in the app but turned off when it sees a Spark - DJI does this because they are jerks and want you to upgrade to a more expensive drone, also the Spark has the capability to do 2.7 and even 4k, DJI won't check the boxes to turn it on), If DJI turned on all the capable features of the Spark then many would not own more expensive drones from DJI - it is all about money and marketing).. I view all my videos and pictures on a laptop so 2.7 or 4k is of no value to me because they will be down sampled anyway.. FYI all pictures are first taken in RAW, then converted.. DJI could simply save the RAW instead of converting it.. It is a marketing gimmick to make you pay more, when in fact it takes less time to simply save a RAW image than it takes to first convert it then save the compressed image.. Storage capacity would be the only issue but with the capacity of cards today that is not an issue.. When you talk beginner or entry level drones. I think that I would opt for a less expensive drone at first to get my feet wet.. If you don't like it or you crash or loose it then there won't be so many tears shed.. For beginners my advice is to look elsewhere for a less expensive drone (JJRC X12 4k, 3 axis gimbal is a viable option to the mini, for 1/2 the price), for other seasoned owners wait a year and see what DJI does.. But as of now I don't think it is worth the money for what you get, because it is highly crippled in many ways.. I won't buy another DJI product until they start to listen to their customer base and give us what we want.. For years Spark owners just wanted a foldable Spark with longer flight time and to turn on some features that the Spark is capable of - DJI didn't listen.. They tried the Mavic Air - Spark owners didn't take the bait, now they discontinued the Spark and are trying the Mavic Mini.. As a Spark owner - the Mini is not what we wanted.. I bought my Spark and accessories on sale, I have the Spark, controller, 3 batteries, Remote charging station with case, total investment - under $550.. The Spark is built like a tank (I have never crashed mine), but I don't think the Mini could stand up to the abuse or crashes that the Spark can.. Add the prop guards to the Mini and you are over 250 grams - you'll have to register it.. Hell, just put a stick on it and you are over 250.. lol

    • @vansantsam
      @vansantsam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1080p vs 2.7k vs 4k.. when you understand megapixels then you will understand the scam.. Take a 12 megapixel picture and view it on a laptop for example (1600 x 900 = 1.5 megapixels), what happens to the other 10.5 megapixels? They are throw out.. Take a 20 megapixel picture and you still see the same 1.5 megapixels, only this time instead of 10.5 megapixels being thrown out 18.5 megapixels are thrown out.. (everything is down sampled, regardless of the original megapixel count).. Unless you have a true 4k monitor you are not going to see 4k - it will be down sampled.. When you take the same size sensor and populate them with different amounts of pixels you often end up with worse results - example 12 megapixel vs 24 megapixels on the same size sensor (12 megapixels will have larger pixels and hold more data per pixel, also will need to be less sensitive (less noise), and draw less power), thus you end up with a better picture.. Now when you view it, it will be down sampled to your monitor - in the case of a laptop for example it will be less than 2 megapixels that you actually see - the 12 megapixel will throw out 10 megapixels where as the 24 megapixel one will throw out 22 megapixels.. And the 12 megapixel (larger pixel, more data per pixel) will actually yield a better view of the image.. Most people don't have a 4k monitor for their computer and at best may have a 4k TV, and how many are actually going to go to the extent to stream to their 4k TV.. It is a fools game..

    • @vansantsam
      @vansantsam 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have 1080p, you can also up sample it to 4k (it won't be true 4k) but it will be populated to 4k and on a 4k monitor will look better than 1080p.. If you view it on a laptop (1.5 megapixels) then you won't notice much if any difference, because it will be down sampled anyway no matter if it is 1080p or 4k..

    From a spark owner...
    -the obstacle avoidance is useless because it only works when your not in sport mode. First off if your not in sport mode wtf are you doing? And not in sport mode it goes like 5 mph so how on earth could you crash it?
    -quick attach props are pointless. There is really no reason to take the props off because they fold up anyways.
    - the remote function buttons don't really serve much of a purpose. I would much rather have removable joysticks.
    - 3 axis gimbal is a big upgrade for the Mavic Mini.
    - the loss of the tracking feature isn't really a big deal because it sucked on the spark and would lose focus quickly.
    the only advantage ill give to my spark is the led and the downward facing depth sensor.
    Don't get my wrong, I love my spark but I think you'd be crazy to say the Mavic Mini isn't an upgrade.

      RADER FPV I see one fly more open box sold for under $350 on eBay in October. Most are over $400.

      @@rsilvers129 When I have some time today, I'll drop you some links here. My wife has a major tooth infection going on, so a little distracted. In the meantime, I'd wait this out a few more weeks if you're really considering the spark. I'm sure the price will drop substantially more.

    Don't forget the sound of the blades... The Mavic Mini is much quieter than the spark and other more expensive DJI drones ;-)

    Doesn't anyone think that DJI could have made the Mavic Mini when they designed the Spark. But, thought they'd get a few more sales if they released the Spark first?

    I sold my spark last week. So you know what i'm coming for

    Rightly you mentioned...Spark has more dynamic range than the Mini, both in videos and photos. If I have to buy one now I will still go for spark. 2-axis gimble...I can manage that. but with all that shooting options, Spark is the thing to go for.

    12 min fly time on the spark is a major problem!!

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s usually even less from what I’ve found.

      Neil Manning you should get the spark it’s amazing and practical it’s better than the mavic

      not so much when you have 5 spare batteries thou... honestly if you have a combo it's not that of a problem. problem might be no white balance and no manual settings on the mini :/ sadly

    Very robust, good comparison of these two drones. I love the way you handled this and also sharing a video comparison, and picture comparison. Whewwww- I don't want to just, throw my spark away, but I'm pretty impressed with what I'm hearing about the flying experience from you and others about the new mini. Also having 60fps. is nice and of course the 3 axis gimble. That's a lot of bang for not too many more bucks than what the Spark is right now. This looks like a pretty worthwile drone. Thanks so much for the great comparison. Marc Trainor.

    The Soark uses a Sony sensor, the Mini does not to cut cost. This is probably why the Spark has better Dynamic Range.
    It is a Sidegrade, keeping my two beloved Sparks here.

    Wondering how much more the Mini needs to fight the wind being 50g lighter? Spark does very well in light wind and was very impressive. Reluctant to try mini for this reason. Might just buy my next spark on Ebay.
