The Nasi Lemak stall owner represents what Singaporeans wish for in Hawker centres. Keeping at least one affordable option for the seniors who might not have the means and maintaining their dignity.
There are still stalls doing this in the older hawker centres, not so much in the newer ones.
If we can afford it, we should support these stalls with the low cost option and buy more from them to sustain their business.

I didn't know simple and delicious nasi lemak cost $1 sold at ToaPayoh old estate. Singaporeans should appreciate this nasi lemak stall owner, compassionate heart. Many old senior citizens can't afford expensive food in other places hawker ctr and coffee shops. I was shocked that some hawkers ctr and coffee shops in newer estates charging simple nasi lemak at minimum $3.80 to $5 plus.
Plain bee hoon $1 for the poor is a good deal and poor retiress and poor citizens.
Laksa $2.80 is cheap and looks good. At Coffee Shops, laksa for a small bowl now costs $4.
I hope more hawker stalls and coffee shops stall can sell reasonable price food for the poor people and senior citizens above 65 yrs who can't get jobs due to unforseen or health problems.

There are still some genuine older hawkers in Singapore looks at trying to keep food affordable because they understand what’s hardship during 60-70’…
Unfortunately, these hawkers is getting lesser by the day as they passed on or call it a day…😢
    ----
Anyway, Nothing beats home cooked food which I m sure many envy you to have MIL that u can pop over for a home cooked meal …

Cheap Nasi Lemak was slightly more common back 10-15 years ago. It was more convenient than convenience store, easy to produce, very easy to Da Bao (You can literally just pass a dollar to the hawker and take the nasi lemak and go), can eat without utensils (you gonna eat lontong, pho or bah chor mee with hands?), gives you all the energy you need to get on working, can easily dispose the container once done (properly of course). But these days with rising rental costs and that people can just call delivery, it is less common now. Sometimes it breaks my heart that foreign construction workers on work permit have only one dollar, and they can only spend it on rice with gravy.
Then the beehoon, these days, that kind of beehoon is now called (labeled as) Economic Beehoon because it is on the cheaper end of things. However, it is not that healthy due to the amount of oil used, and more importantly, it is not always Halal.
Sometimes I wonder if more people should adopt the practice of fasting annually, not out of religious practice, not because you want to know what is it like to be hungry, but to remember the poor. Also, not about fasting for one day, but fasting over multiple days, because depending on how you long you fasted, your body reacts differently.
Health advisory for those who has never done fasting and wish to attempt fasting:
    1. Discuss with your doctors first (VERY IMPORTANT)
    2. Don't just drop eating food. slowly reduce the amount. your body needs time to adapt.
