The Witcher (Polish: Wiedźmin), by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, is a fantasy series of short stories and novels about the witcher Geralt of Rivia. In Sapkowski's books, "witchers" are monster hunters who (with training and body modification) develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly beasts. The books have been adapted into a film, a television series, video games, and a graphic novel series. The series of novels is known as the Witcher Saga. The short stories and novels have been translated into numerous languages, including English.
The books have been described as having a cult following in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria and other Central and Eastern European countries.
The video games have been very successful, and as of March 2018, they have sold over 33 million copies worldwide.
The Witcher (Polish: Wiedźmin [ˈvʲjɛ̇ʥ̑mʲĩn]) is an action role-playing game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by Atari.
The game utilizes BioWare's proprietary Aurora Engine. A console version was to be released in late 2009 using an entirely new engine and combat system and entitled The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf; it was suspended, however, due to payment problems with console developers Widescreen Games.
Two sequels were released: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings in 2011 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015.
There are three camera styles available in The Witcher: two top-down perspectives, where the mouse is used to control most functions, and an over-the-shoulder view, which brings the player closer to the in-game combat, but limits visibility. In all three views the controls can be changed to be primarily mouse focused or a combined keyboard and mouse approach.
Players can choose one of three fighting styles to use in different situations and against different foes. The fast style allows for faster, less-damaging attacks with a greater chance of hitting faster enemies; the strong style deals more damage in exchange for a slow attack speed, and a lower chance to hit faster enemies; and the group style features sweeping attacks best used if Geralt is surrounded.
The player can switch between the styles at any point. Both of Geralt's main swords also have distinctively different combat styles from other weaponry, and serve specific purposes. The steel blade is used to fight humans and other flesh-and-blood beings, while the silver sword is more effective against supernatural monsters and beasts (against some of which steel may have no effect whatsoever). With precise timing, the player can link Geralt's attacks into combos to more effectively damage enemies.
Alchemy is a major part of gameplay. The player can create potions that increase health or endurance regeneration, allow Geralt to see in the dark, or provide other beneficial effects. The recipes for these potions can be learned through scrolls, or by experimentation. Once the player creates an unknown potion he can choose to drink it, but if the potion is a failure it will poison or have other harmful effects on Geralt. Each time Geralt drinks potions they increase the toxicity level of his body. This can be reduced by drinking a special potion or by meditating at an inn or fireplace. In addition to potions, the player can create oils used to augment the damage done by weapons. They can also create bombs for use as weapons in combat. Neither can be created until talent points have been allocated into the corresponding skills.
A time-delayed decision-consequence system means that the repercussions of players' decisions will make themselves apparent in plot devices in later acts of the game. This helps avert a save-reload approach to decision making. It also adds to the game's replay value, as the consequences resulting from the player's decisions can lead to great difference in the events that take place later, and ultimately a very different gameplay experience than in prior playthroughs.
The player often find themselves choosing from the lesser of two evils rather than making a clear choice between good and evil, a situation reflective of real life morality. - เกม

Just started reading The Last Wish (witcher book) and the first encounter in the book is literally this trailer, so cool.
Love how this is almost word for word how the fight with the Striga went in the books. Thats one thing about the show's version of this that I didn't like, in the book, for basically the entire battle save for the very end where she transformed back into a human, Geralt was in complete control of the battle, he didn't even draw his sword until like halfway through, while in the show he was just kind of flailing around and kept screwing up. Book/Game Geralt just felt a lot more experienced.

Chicken Mike complexity was fine for me in the first one I'd say it's about as complex as the second. only annoying thing for me was the god damn rhythm based combat system that just pissed me off and get floaty af

Sadly Sapowzki doesn't consider the games as canon. Even though CD Projekt red writing the continuation way way better. Series will follow only contents of the books.

There's something very creepy and cool about witcher 1 Geralt. He looks less human, which I think makes sense considering that he's a mutant. In the show, he is just too human imo. I would have loved the show 10 times more if they made him like this.
In the games he's much more apathetic to his surroundings while in the show he's always pissed off. They completely fucked his character.

I'm here after ep. 3 from Netflix series. So far Witcher on Netflix is superb and Henry Calvill is owning the role as Geralt.
So throw a rock at it, go hand to hand, than throw it 20 feet and hit some scaffolding with enough force to drop said scaffolding, then climb a tower cause it'll come after you and punch it, only then draw your weapon and flourish for a solid ten seconds. And if it tries to run away go inside and sleep in a coffin.
The only thing more nonsensical was when I then tried playing it cause a friend said it was cool.

Paultheawesome13 the sleping in the cofin makes sense lorewise, because when day time aproaches strigas go somewhere safe(most of the time in a sarcophagus inside a crypt like we see here) to escape it, and if you want to lift the curse of a striga you need to survive a night near her sarcophagus, and thats just what geralt did in this trailer.

Because if you actually watched the netflix version, you'd see the striga just grabbing and tossing Geralt around without doing any other attacks and just fucking cheap ass screaming unlike she did with the previous witcher one tapping him and Gerald being tossed around with no strategy whatsoever. At least in this version there is strategy and professionalism of being a witcher is shown.

Actually, the first Witcher was a smashing hit as well, pretty much an AAA title. You just weren't aware of it back then because of many possible reasons.
