George Clanton is his real name. Hypnagogic Pop is actually a larger genre that artists like Ariel Pink and John Maus (and occasionally James Ferraro) are often grouped into, and in a lot of ways it's considered one of the precursors to vaporwave. George gained a lot of his early popularity by making instrumental vaporwave albums under the name ESPRIT in the early-mid 2010s, although he's been making 80's tinged pop music for years before that under the name Mirror Kisses. Some other good cultural anchors for this album that I don't think you mentioned are Tears for Fears and 311 (George has worked with Nick Hexum of 311 before). George Clanton's last two records, Slide and 100% Electronica, are also very good and worth listening to.

started watching the video before i played the record so i was expecting it to be super gentle but that first track hits you with such an explosion of this lush wall of sound i was so taken aback

avaa ! the quality of these discussions is incredible. In the world of score-criticism and reaction streamers, you are such a refreshing counter. The pop tart isn't lame, we're stupid!

I think I'm one of those who like "lame" music, my father was very in gregorian chants and enya and I'm into the sea shanties and bladee!! AVAA, professor!

I listen to your videos during my overnight shifts, I have always loved hearing your unique perspectives, and this one is no different :) Glad you enjoyed this one, AVAA
Also, in the realm of hypnogogic pop, “pom pom” by Ariel Pink is one of my favorites and you should absolutely give it a chance. Truly an otherworldly look at the mind of a genius madman. Notably with some 60s pop influenced songwriting and some insane production (especially on Lipstick and Four Shadows).
    Keep doing what you do!!!

      Yes, Ariel’s whole discography
is an experience and a half. Lipstick is definitely my fave off of Pom Pom, very different from the demo Shower Me In Lipstick he made, which took me a while to appreciate after I stopped trying to make it sound like the glossed-up verson.

I gotta say this is my first video I've seen of yours but still AVAA. You're such an engaging speaker and I can't remember the last time I felt so captivated just listening to someone speak for 40 minutes.
But on the music at hand, George Clanton (and yeah it is his actual name and I too mistook it for George Clinton lol) rose to fame as a vaporwave artist who became notable for being one of the first in the genre to not be sample based (namely under the pseudonym ESPRIT). And I have to highly, HIGHLY recommend you give his record "200% Electronica" under the ESPRIT name a listen when you get the chance. You Hold the Key and I Found It is more reminiscent of his stuff on that record, and that hypnagogic wooziness is in full force on that album. It's largely instrumental but the mood is just incredible.

I was surprised to hear you talk about Enigma. In 80s Germany Michael Cretu was a public figure mostly known as the producer and then husband of the biggest female German pop star at that time, Sandra. Enigma was his own project. Considering that his most popular song for Sandra was titled "Maria Magdalena" and his synth sound already had a church like feel to it so the way to the Enigma sound was already paved.

    I liked your review.
This was one of my favorite albums this year. He really does capture that feeling of being to young to be old but also to old to be young. Me and George are both in our 30's and i think it's about that time of your life. 25ish to 40ish. But also everyone always feels that way no matter what age.
Feeling like you should have everything figured out by now. A "career" and being married with a family.
I dropped out of college and I've never been married or had kids. And now I'm in my 30's. It's not cute anymore lol. I don't know what I'm doing. I have to justify what my life is. I think a lot of millineals feel that way.
George is actually very sarcastic and ironic but also extremely sincere. Even in the way he talks and jokes. I think his music is too. It straddles the line being both ironic and completely sincere.
And the music influences he draws from are also similar. They seem ironic but are actually very sincere.
His other albums are amazing as well. I will say aava but this is my first full video I've seen of yours.

A long comment to try to fight the algo-cat. I loved the review as always even if I haven't heard the album, yet.
But I'd like to ask a question to the linguist, and not the music reviewer this time. This thing is haunting me since a long time (I can't even find a satisfying answer on the internet).
So.. in your videos you often say 'one of the better albums, one of the better songs ecc..'. I lived in America, and also all my american friends and my american ex girlfriend used to always use the comparative 'better' in sentences like the one above.
But I remember from my high school studies that in those cases the book always used the superlative: 'one of the best albums.. one of the best songs'.
My american friends told me that it's the same thing or that using the superlative is actually wrong, but I'm still not 100% convinced.
So.. Is there a correct form?

"It's not the Poptart that's stupid", I literally went, "Oooooooh". LOL, Sick burn, Dad! (pun somewhat intended). That is hilariously mean. And also true. And I'm glad it's a joke now in your family, because while not 100% perfection as parenting, it actually kinda is? Because we are humans before we are parents, and our foibles and sense of humor are going to shine through. And knowing, understanding, and loving that about each other is what creates family.
