Most Common Comments: 1) AM I AN IDIOT FOR TRYING THIS!?!? This isn't my first rodeo guys. Been off roading for 10 years now. I've had a 1st gen SAS on 35s all the way up to a 3rd gen 5spd on 33s. It was very fun and challenging to get thrown back into a stock vehicle, especially on street tires... it made me appreciate again how much all those little mods really do that I got so used to having on a rig. 2) The startup noise was valve tap (lifters) and I wouldn't have put that in the video if I wasn't 100% sure about it. It takes a bit for oil pressure to build up after the oil drains down from the car sitting for months. I appreciate you guys listing your hypothesis because it shows me you care haha, but honestly you are diagnosing this through a digital speaker whereas I heard it in real life. 3) YES WE DID AIR DOWN at the 2nd waterfall. The 4runner lost too much ground clearance from airing down and literally scraped on every rock... I had to AIR BACK UP in order to clear the obstacles hahaha. 4) The auction was COPART. You need a business license in the auto industry to bid on most vehicles. 5) I appreciate all comments good or bad and I try to reply to everybody! Hey Dirt C, thanks for the vid. Definitely entertaining. 🤙🏼. Just started looking at a few 4.7 V8s have popped up in my neighborhood and was wondering if you can determine a 4wd/2wd from external view, or are all 2004s AWD? Because I'm a cheap bastard, when it came time to buy a new car, I picked up a 2006 Limited V8 about a year and a half ago. 189k on the odometer. My wife thought I was nuts buying anything with that many miles, considering that we're in Pennsylvania, where almost everything is rotting away before 150k thanks to heavy road salt use. But my 4Runner came from Tennesee. And so, after a year and a half, the thing has had only a few minor issues. It's needed a new brake caliper, a u-joint in the steering column, and as we speak, it's having a rusted-out line to the transmission cooler replaced. That isn't bad for a 200k vehicle. It has a decent amount of torque, has tons of room for a baby seat in the back, it's comfortable, and capable (I just need some mud tires and a mild lift), and I can tow 7,000 pounds if I really want to. The fuel economy sucks but who cares. Congrats on this purchase, hope it goes another 500k!
Thats awesome! My friends thought I was nuts as well... but I just took this thing on a 1600 mile trip to Utah and back. hahah. It's the hot rod of 4runners and its reliable. I doubt there will ever be another V8 4runner ever again.

Great frickin' video...loved it! You had me laughing...You and I have a similar story regarding our 4Runners. My 1999 Toyota 4Runner literally saved my life - that and I had God and his angels watching over me. I was driving back home to Washington (originally from Bay Area and can't wait to leave this God-awful corrupt state of WA)...anyways, driving back home during wintertime a few months ago and the stupid CAL TRANS aholes did not put de-icer on the roads, yet again (the same thing happened on my way down a few weeks earlier), around the Shasta County/Weed/Yreka area of the I-5. Anyways, I come up to this one blind turning section and I see a trucker on the side of the road waving his arms wildly about one hundred yards from me. At that exact moment, I am driving over the "bridge-like" (overpass) sections that are made of different concrete material and which freeze up all the time during wintery/snow conditions, causing major accidents throughout this country. So I see the trucker waving wildly and just as I see him, I enter this frozen bridge-like section. I tap...only tap on my breaks to simply release the cruise control and here we go...I do three full 360's starting on this frozen bridge and am literally thinking Nascar Racing as I'm grabbing onto the "oh-shit" bar. I end up skating/flying backward down this bridge section, then onto the main I-5 road and then down a big embankment - at this point all in reverse/flying backward and down the steep embankment. I am literally thinking that I'm going to flip at any moment...Incredibly, not only do I not flip, after my 360's and flying off the embankment, but my bumper and my tailgate hitch literally saved my life (God and his angels, of course, are the main saviors here). I end up hitting a tree with my bumper/tail hitch exactly dead on - my trailer hitch hit this tree head-on preventing me...stopping me from continuing to go down further and/or flip repeatedly. After I hit and am trying to collect myself, trying to get out of shock, I get out and now see all the previous accidents before me that occurred before mine - numerous flipped over cars all around me with a guy's truck flipped over and smoking less than 20 yards away from me. Chaos everywhere and I keep hearing that dreaded, horrific sound of cars still crashing. As I'm running up the embankment I see my 49ers tail hitch cover halfway sticking out of the ground. I chuckle, laugh in astonishment as I cannot believe how my cover hitch is in the ground barely sticking out of the dirt so far away from where I ended up. I continue up the embankment to avoid more car crashes/flips and to see who to help. A crazy day but I am still alive - for my kids. My silver Toyota 4Runner...wow, the only damage was just like yours when you hit a tree - I had damage to my bumper and dents on the back top of the back hatch door. I am lucky to still be here... I loved your story of how you went to go pick up your 4Runner and got it back to life and running well. Just made me think... Thank you, God and your angels because I know that they, you all, saved me that day!!! And, this Toyota 4Runner sitting in my garage? Still running like a charm 😊
You just bought a badass suv man! I have a 2005 Land Cruiser , same 4.7 L V8 And I’ve got 273,000 miles on it. We bought it back in 2004 brand new, and had it ever since! One owner car, gonna keep it forever !
This gives me hope. I'm about to sign for a 2004 V8 sport 4runner with 148K miles on it. Have had a 02 Tacoma V6 for 13 years and its been the best vehicle I've ever owned, hoping this 4Runner lasts just as long.
Instead of valve tap it could be small exhaust leak that goes away when warm. But ad some product with oil change. Might help if it is valve tap. Man I love it. My best friend has one 2009 limited with 53k miles. Lol. V8 is badass and goes forever
That’s why forerunners are so popular they’re just tough right out of the gate get you a 3 inch lift on it or something and put some bigger tires on it you’ll really go some places !! Are used to go for wheeling a lot but rock scare me because all it takes is one hit that oil pan or driveline and you’re stuck,
It probably wasn't valve tap. These engines are known to have their header gaskets rust out. That's why it goes away when hot. It expands and seals the small holes making the ticking noise.
I got an 01 Tacoma with 436k miles on it. Now that I have a new daily driver shes becoming my toy I'm buying a 500 dollar parts truck and making cut off doors, baja suspension it's the stepside so all it needs is suspension and front flares and it's ready to rock

Keep the videos coming! I just got a 2007 4runner limited v6 with 233,000 miles in January! My dream suv and i love it! Only issue is torque converter shudder. But, if driven in 4th gear setting, no issue. Otherwise, toyota s only fix is to put a whole new transmission in.
two weeks ago i got 2004 v8 with 182,000 for $6200 in great shape. preemptively replaced the timing belt. replacing cv axels that had a torn boot, and getting spark plugs, transmission fluid, and differential oil and it's 100% good to go. hopefully looking forward to another 182k miles 👌
@@vadimnesen8060 yes. For me, in drive, it happens between 23-48mph under light load and light acceleration. During torque lock up. But a little more throttle and the transmission downshifts and the shuddering stops. My mechanic put 2 tubes of shudder stop in the transmission and it helped a lot. Otherwise, it doesnt happen at all when set in 4th gear. Prior to the shudder fix, i would drive daily in 4th gear and only put it into drive while on the highway - over 50mph.
Needs some Goodyear wrangler Duratracs and then try adding Archoil 9100 to your oil, will really help coat that old engine. Really helped my old 6.0 Powerstroke to not foul injectors. Just a helpful FYI...
My runner almost looks the same It's just a couple years newer and not the sport edition I got Limited. But I do live in the Rust Belt it's an uphill battle. I coat Everything underneath with a rust encapsulator every year It definitely helps

Hey thank you for the video, it helps me alot in terms of planning to upgrade my 4th gen 4runner suspension to 3rd gen Tacoma TRD suspension. Question is do I need the control arms? I bought the kit without it. And if it does, would a 2014 4runner trail ed, u/ control arms be sufficient? Quick answer would really be appreciated?
Dirt Complex Thanks for the answer. I bought 2017 Tacoma TRD suspension kit, w/o control arms. I dropped it off for my mechanic to install. He told me my 03 4runner Limited has XREAS, (hydrolic). Do you think I should delete the XREAS, and install the TRD suspensions or keep the XREAS? Wondering how that would affect my ride? I just like the 2” lift looks plus install 2019 4runner Trail edition wheels on it. Should Or Shouldn’t? Thanks!
Really surprised that how a 500k mile 4runner perform daily and even off-road. I am pretty interested in your suspension modification, I am wondering if you only change the front stock and coil or both front and rear?
So did you do anything with the rear suspension? Being that you installed the Tacoma struts on the front, did you leave the factory XREAS rear shocks or install the Tacoma rear shocks? Thanks
To install the Tacoma rear shocks all you need to do is change out the lower shock bushings to 4runner ones. I ended up using FJ rear shocks because my buddy had them sitting around and they bolted right in.
@@DirtComplex Thanks for the Info. I'm currently looking at buying a set of 18 TRD off road Tacoma front struts and rear shocks for my 05 v8 sport. Did you run your stock coils in the back with the Tacoma front struts?
I know those roads well. I live in Running Springs. Looking to get out of the payments on my Subaru, thinking of getting a one of these bad boys, with less mile of course

Have had two 4 Runners and a Tacoma, they are indestructible within reason. You can tear anything up if you try.
I have a 2008 4R V8 with nearly 250K miles and it runs great. Bought new very few problems. 20 mpg
This gives me hope. I'm about to sign for a 2004 V8 sport 4runner with 148K miles on it. Have had a 02 Tacoma V6 for 13 years and its been the best vehicle I've ever owned, hoping this 4Runner lasts just as long.
Keep up with the timing belt changes and this v8 lasts forever! Plenty of Tundras with high miles on the same v8!
Are used to go for wheeling a lot but rock scare me because all it takes is one hit that oil pan or driveline and you’re stuck,
You have some potential with this channel. I'm keen to see more of where this 4Runner will go.
Thanks! I'm excited to show where it takes us!
LOL. dat editing with the taco smashing into the rock.
just bought virtually the same 4runner, even same rims and color, with 170k, good to know its not even broken in yet
Yeah basic maintenance is all that is needed!
Damn surprised that thing started up with no issues at 500k miles besides the valve tap😂😂
Young Oorah With proper maintenance a 2UZ is INDESTRUCTIBLE! #BUFFHORSES
they don't make em like they use to be
the epic fail gamer they still make the engine in tundras
It probably wasn't valve tap. These engines are known to have their header gaskets rust out. That's why it goes away when hot. It expands and seals the small holes making the ticking noise.
@@adamwright9790 no, the 4.7 was replaced with a 4.6 in the Tundra and other vehicles around 2010 or so.
4.7 V8👍
Man you can really go somewhere with this channel, I hope you keep uploading, just subscribed!!
Thanks I really appreciate it! Working on the next episode right now because of this surge of comments and views I am now inspired!
Dirt Complex glad to hear it, keep up the great work
How did you stop the engine knocking noise? what is caused by?
It went away. It can happen momentarily if an engine sits for a long time.
These things are great. I have 400k on mine.
I got an 01 Tacoma with 436k miles on it. Now that I have a new daily driver shes becoming my toy I'm buying a 500 dollar parts truck and making cut off doors, baja suspension it's the stepside so all it needs is suspension and front flares and it's ready to rock
Just bought a 03 limited with 151k for 3800. Taking it to get Pennsylvania inspected tomorrow. I'm a little nervous
@@rossheadley8565 you from Pennsylvania? I spend half my time near Erie, and the other half in California, I'm so scared to bring my taco to Pennsylvania even tho I would be able to drive it more Scary rust

@@rossheadley8565 good shit, if you got an Instagram look up Bayareataco that's mine then theres another Mike over in ohio kinda near Canton he has a Tacoma with 400k as well hes catching up 😫
Dude, you're definitely not an idiot for this! I bought my 07 v8 limited 4runner new and have 465,000 miles on it with only maintenance stuff. Taking it to Toytec for lift in a couple weeks!
I considered selling it and getting a new(er) 4Runner, but why? Love this thing.
Awesome! You can't go wrong with toytec! Thanks for watching!
Have yet to see this video/content and already know its going to be GOOOOOD!!!
Why? Because 4.7L Content.....
No lie I've never seen this but the narrating story and editing are spot on, 2 min in and I'm subscribing
I had a 2005 4Runner 4.7 as well! I loved that SUV
Lol too the cd and playing that person music got me rolling 💀. Good find man.
Great story !
Thanks!!!
Yew!! Got that good 'ol 4.7 in our family truck, solid drivetrain!
Was curious I noticed you said you installed the front suspension off of the Tacoma but did you install the back shocks also. I have a set from a 2022 Tacoma and wasn’t sure if they would work. Thanks
Great Story! I love it. I have a 2006 Toyota 4R V-8 that is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I will drive it until one of us dies, and it will most likely be me first 😎. Congrats on a great grab. These 4Runners are like a gift from the GODS.
Thanks for watching! Definitely my favorite powertrain. Needs some upgrades to get it looking better though.
Did you transmission oils change ? Or basic Tun up ? What exactly you did before put on way ?
Literally lol'd so many times. Great video. You got a new fan my friends.
Thanks! Comments like this make it worth the hours spent editing.
@@DirtComplex oh man editing is the worst. Hats off to anyone who accomplishes it like this.
Just seeing this video now AJ. Awesome editing with an awesome story. Makes me miss my 4th gen.
Hey what's up! Thanks! Im working on the next episode right now.
Both my daughter and I have auction vehicles bought from the same dealer. He's a good guy!
The 2006 4Runner Sport I just bought came with chewed-up Taylor Swift CD in the player. "Red", if you must know. 😄 Might explain the 20" rims, too. Still a beast in the snow!
6:13 what a good tip.... I am sad now i just learned i have been doing it wrong the whole time.... lol :)
I have a 1999 Toyota 4Runner and I love the looks of it . I think 3rd gen 4Runner had the best look . They are like the XJ for Jeep Cherokee.
Yeah I miss the raw look of the 3rd gen. 4th gen isn't my favorite looking 4runner but with some upgrades it looks better.
Great vid guys. I love 06 4runner :)
Wow that Toyota with almost half million miles got you there and back after being abused rock crawling. That’s damn good reliability.
Thanks. I didn't even show the whole trip!. We were drifting around some snowy back trails before that day.
that tacoma with the duratracs looks sweet... 9:56 why is the FJ running BFG KO2 on the rear and 1 duratrac on the front?? :) 1 outta 4 was a great choice though ;)
Hahah good eye. I bet you're the only one in the entire world that caught that! He had the duratrac as his spare but he started doing a 5 tire rotation so it moves around with his other 4 ko2s
This video has motivated me to get a high mileage V8 4Runner!
Get a v6, less maintenance more reliable and doesn’t have the timing belt.
Just replace the timing belt and your good to go for another 100,000 miles
Ended up purchasing 244k miles 4runner v8 4x4
roy326 what year is it?

Teehee Gotit why the hipster car? Are you planning to move to Seattle sometime soon? For the love of god please don’t put a huge stainless steel fart can on it like all the other annoying Subaru fan boys.
Keep the videos coming! I just got a 2007 4runner limited v6 with 233,000 miles in January! My dream suv and i love it!
Only issue is torque converter shudder. But, if driven in 4th gear setting, no issue. Otherwise, toyota s only fix is to put a whole new transmission in.
i have a white 07 i got with 123,000.. its got 227,000 on her now.. runs like a champ!!
two weeks ago i got 2004 v8 with 182,000 for $6200 in great shape. preemptively replaced the timing belt. replacing cv axels that had a torn boot, and getting spark plugs, transmission fluid, and differential oil and it's 100% good to go. hopefully looking forward to another 182k miles 👌
I replaced both boots, new front calipers and all new brake pads.
Omg same here! When its on the 4 instead of drive it doesnt shoulder. And the shudder only happens in low speed on 2nd 3rd gear. Sp weird
Damn you got a badass deal. I've been looking for one of those
Dude go to Copart site in your state plenty of 4Runners best in Conn low miles
I hope this hasn't been asked and answered, but did you need anything else to do the suspension swap - Tacoma to 4Runner? Is it just "plug n play?"
Fronts spring and shock from the 3rd gen Tacoma is plug and play 2" lift. Rears won't fit without changing out the lower bushing.
@@DirtComplex thanks much for the info! Did the rear springs need to be changed or did you stay OEM? The 4R looks pretty level in the video!
In the video I was on stock springs, but eventually I put FJ Cruiser rear springs which fit right in and gave me 0.5" lift
Needs some Goodyear wrangler Duratracs and then try adding Archoil 9100 to your oil, will really help coat that old engine. Really helped my old 6.0 Powerstroke to not foul injectors. Just a helpful FYI...
I ran wrangler mtr on my last rig! I got different tires this time cuz I got them heavily discounted. Thanks for watching!
My runner almost looks the same It's just a couple years newer and not the sport edition I got Limited. But I do live in the Rust Belt it's an uphill battle. I coat Everything underneath with a rust encapsulator every year It definitely helps
NAAAAAH!!! you did alright. Good enough lift just not enough tire. do it til you get it right enjoy yourself.
Thanks! Exactly. I went back with the same lift on 295/70r17 Milestar Patagonia and made it up no problem!
@@DirtComplex I just got a 3rd gen ELECTRIC REAR LOCKING DIFF. 120k miles looking forward to a lot of mods this spring. Parts for that thing are higher than a giraffes butt hole. But gotta have a little fun right keep in touch.✌️
Very Cool! Airing down those tires would make things even easier for you guys.
You're right. It definitely helped for the FJ... but the 4runner lost an inch of ground clearance by doing that and it just snagged on everything possible hahaha. I had to air back up to gain the clearance to go back down.
Lots of fun watching this video! keep up the good work
Best. Video. EVAH! That Phlex song I'd never heard before. Using the trucks and finding your own way. Bringing a yota back from the brink; for cheap! The hilarious, everything. What auction website did you use to buy it?
At least the glass didn’t break. Lol. Just found your channel. Love it
Even crazier, the glass still goes up and down perfectly!
Did you have to take out the X-REAS suspension and then replace with that Tacoma TRD suspension?
Yes. Xreas needs to be removed. I used fj coils and shocks in the rear
4Runner is Legendary
Dude i got a 2004 v6 4runner for 3600 6 months ago. It also had a cd in it, it was mexican music tho. Mine was also silver but it ran and still runs fine with 137k had the same mis fire also, just changed the spark plugs and it was gucci

That generation Tundra is a great size as far as everyday trucks go. Not too small and not too massive like newer trucks today. Hahha if it died I would've towed it home.
Awesome! Just curious, did you bid on Copart? Also, do you have your dealers license to be able to bid?
Yes Copart requires a license to bid. However there are a lot of brokers out there that charge a fee which will allow you to bid.

Very much appreciated!!
hydraulic lifters tap if sitting unrun for long - normal till they build pressure.
Yup. Exactly. 💯
Dirt Complex Except the 4.7 doesn't use hydraulic lifters.
Wow you got a hell of a deal for those shocks!! Jealous!
Curios to know if you ran the stock springs in the rear with the tacoma suspension.
I did temporarily use stock springs but the rear was too low. Ended up running FJ cruiser rear springs with the Tacoma fronts and it leveled out nicely.
@@DirtComplex gotcha! Noice! Good to know man, thanks! Love the videos .
As a european i see no problem towing that with a big truck like the tacoma. We would tow 7700 behind a toyota hilux or land cruiser here.
"big truck" what big truck has a car engine in it
Awesome video
Hey thank you for the video, it helps me alot in terms of planning to upgrade my 4th gen 4runner suspension to 3rd gen Tacoma TRD suspension. Question is do I need the control arms? I bought the kit without it. And if it does, would a 2014 4runner trail ed, u/ control arms be sufficient? Quick answer would really be appreciated?
No control arms needed. Thanks for watching!
Dirt Complex Thank you!
Thanks!
@@dav1vie The XREAS is probably worn out anyway and not worth the cost to replace it. You'll be happy if you remove it completely.
Dirt Complex Cool Thnx!
Really surprised that how a 500k mile 4runner perform daily and even off-road. I am pretty interested in your suspension modification, I am wondering if you only change the front stock and coil or both front and rear?
Tacomas come with rear leaf so that doesn't work. I put FJ Cruiser springs in the rear and it leveled out nicely
@@DirtComplex Thanks so much for your reply, I am thinking about lift my 4runner and you really help me a lot. Looking forward to the next episode~!
@@mpiers9792 in this video yes. Stock coils in the rear. In the next Utah video im running fj rear coils which gave me 0.5"-0.75" of lift

How did you fix the misfire on cylinder number five?
Replaced all the spark plugs!
Where were you measuring from when you measured the change in ride height? It looks like from the bottom of the fender to what? The center of the rim?
Yes. Center of rim. The 4runner comes really raked from the factory.
