I LOVE these brilliant gifted Scholars. IMAGINE what the World would be if we had Leaders like these Men as our Mentors and those who are so capably able to encourage us to fall in LOVE with learning. I find this series addictive, compelling and endlessly thought provoking. Thank you so very much for producing and delivering this "lost knowledge" to those of us who have endured (suffered) through years of post graduate studies, and have taken VASTLY MORE away from this Aquinas 101 series with a burning passion to continue to learn. Thank you and may GOD Bless one and all who were involved in this series.

Thank you Fr. Pine for simplifying our day to day intellectual life process and our contemplative spiritual life process in our hearts and mind merging them together and not compartalized it integrating them altogether in one! As St. Thomas Aquainas has taught and said Mens Sano in Corpore Sana! A healthy mind in a healthy body! Our mind n body are also like a computer; Garbage in Garbage out, Good things in Good things out! Im a man of science born and raise as catholic! There is no conflict between science and our catholic religion and our faith! As Dr Albert Einstein has said I qoute where science ends religion begins, whoever invented the Atoms owns the Universe! In my study of Embryology back then our teacher is a Catholic Doctor He explains after the fertilization of eggcell by the sperm cell there will be cell division and cells will multiply their numbers coming from one fertilized eggcell them two coeloum or space inside will be formed the upper coelum will become our upper body and the lower space will become our lower body and each of the divided cell will go to their proper place to become our head our brain our heart our arms our feet etc as if they have a mind of their own or some thing a power is pushing them to go to their proper place in which science cannot explain why? And he said what Dr Albert Einstein has said he qoutes him Where science ends religion begins! K

Second watching- gleaned more than the first. Hope to gain more from the third.
I became acutely aware of St Thomas about a year and a half ago. Before, having only been aware that he was a church doctor.
‘Something’ keeps drawing me closer to his work - and what was once mind numbing is now making more sense … and I’m just nibbling around the edges. The 7-8 minute videos from TI have been invaluable to bring me to this point - the Preachers who present them do so in a clear concise way to bring the novice along.
Blessings to all the OP’s who have made this possible.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 📚 Study and holiness are interconnected; don't separate your intellectual life from your spiritual life.
10:25 🧠 Wisdom comes in different forms: conceptual wisdom, Christological wisdom, and mystical wisdom.
17:06 📖 Study grows you in virtue, including wisdom, as it's a contemplative endeavor and part of your pursuit of God.
20:46 🎁 Wisdom as a gift of the Holy Spirit allows you to know by inclination and have a supernatural sensitivity to God's heart.
22:04 🧐 St. Thomas Aquinas is considered a master of wisdom, and his approach to knowledge is deeply rooted in his faith.
23:29 📚 St. Thomas served as a university master, and his role included reading, disputing, and preaching. He read and commented extensively on Scripture and taught various subjects.
24:53 📖 St. Thomas wrote extensively, including commentaries on texts, theological textbooks, and polemical treatises to defend his order and religious life.
25:37 🕊️ St. Thomas's work is ultimately in service to the Lord and is a reflection of divine wisdom. He equips others to think and understand, rather than just providing ready-made answers.
27:02 📜 In the Summa Theologiae, St. Thomas aims to convey Christian religion in a way suitable for beginners, sweeping aside repetition and organizing theology systematically.
30:08 🤔 St. Thomas sets up objections to his own arguments, representing opposing viewpoints, and then refutes them.
35:16 💡 St. Thomas argues that sacred doctrine, or theology, is wisdom above all human wisdom, focusing on the highest cause, namely God, making it the highest form of wisdom.
38:32 📚 Sacred doctrine, according to St. Thomas, treats of God as the highest cause, not only as known through creatures but also as known to Himself alone and revealed to others, justifying its title of wisdom.
43:27 🤔 The fear of the Lord, often associated with wonder and awe, is considered the beginning of the contemplative life, helping us ask the right questions.
45:18 💡 When starting to cultivate the virtue of wisdom through study, prioritize consistency (e.g., 15 minutes daily) over long but infrequent sessions.
49:17 📚 While studying St. Thomas Aquinas, it's not necessary to study Plato and Aristotle first; you can begin with introductory materials and then delve into Aquinas himself.
52:10 🙏 Humility is a virtue that requires dedication and perseverance; pray the Litany of Humility to help cultivate it.
54:03 🤝 Contemplation is an active receptivity to reality, where we engage with things not only for practical purposes but also for their nobility and excellence.
57:37 📖 The relationship between the contemplation of sacred scripture and theological texts like the Summa can be complementary; both can help guide one towards wisdom and faith.
01:01:39 🤔 The fear of the Lord as the beginning of knowledge is associated with the wonder and awe that sparks the desire to ask profound questions. Knowledge is essential on the path to wisdom but doesn't require intellectual gifts; it's open to all.

The reason why Aquinas thinking is so penetrating is hisdesire to know and love God---as he himself taught, the lover wants to be with the beloved always; this means knowledge of the Beloved (God) in Scriptures, in natural sciences especially Philosophy (every knowledge available) and thru prayer by lifting his mind and heart with the Love of God. Aquinas learned more from prayers than reading books. So Aquinas thinks like a Lover ever desirous of knowing more and more about his BELOVED (God).

I like the saying and teaching I knew from St Thomas Aquainas when im still a young college student he said Mens Sano in Corpore sana! A healthy mind in a healthy body! I also read that most of the time when St Thomas is on his prayer and before he writes principles in His Summa Theologica He puts his head inside the tabernacle to really grasped and feel and think what The Good Lord Jesus Christ wants him to write about that day! Its his day to day habit! He said when we use our mind well in the service of God we will increase our Love to others as well! But it sad we cannot find any tomb of St Thomas Aquainas who lived and died sometime in the 12th century because of his popularity to other Catholic Churches and to the Catholic faithfulls during his time the chop chop his body parts and distributed most of it to almost all Catholic Churches in Europe to keep and serve as relics but for some other reason nothing has been preserved up to this time 20th century!

Hater of sin is the fear of GOD, fear of GOD is the beginning of wisdom.
A man's words maybe deep waters , but wisdom is from a flowing Brook.
Wisdom comes at night and first frightens you , then returns to give you her riches.

Thank you for the wonderful talk Father! I am having a hard time with the idea that we can have certainty through faith. I am thinking of all the many religious traditions and cults that are thrown at us. How can we just take a leap of faith and expect to have certainty? Isn't there some sort of rational principle by which we can identify the Catholic faith as the true depository of the fullness of God's revelation?

This is really good, mind bending. Aquinas seem so tough for me to nail down, yet I hear how explicit he is in the Summa. Maybe it is because Aquinas covers ALL the bases when explaining stuff. Should really study the Summa more slowly or maybe start with something else? I'd really appreciate some advice/suggestions here.

What discourages me in the pursuit of the thinking like Thomas Aquinas is I don't know even how to begin the self-talk of learning. Without that I can't begin to retain the teaching. I have trouble summarizing key content in my own words which would show me I'm understanding some part, at least. One exception might be the Principle of Non-Contradition.

  • @reyreyes6126

Thinking like Thomas means thinking with penetrating mind endowed with Grace to see What and Who God is with Reason enlightened with Faith. It requires studiousness, purity of mind, prayers, much reflection, knowledge of the Art and Science of Thinking he took from Aristotle. For a start, one needs to be a philosopher (following his Thomistic Philosophy), then delve into his Theology---those are the two basic requirements Only after then, that one can think (per participationem) like Aquinas. To think like him is to apply his philosophical and theological principles to contemporary issues (its relevance), and not merely repeating what he says. BTW, his Summa is a model how he thinks--he presents the issue (the article question) , then he presents Pros and Cons regarding it (this requires research), then after analyzing both sides, he now replies to the question based on the established principles or laws to resolve the question. From that conclusion, he proceeds to a related question in his next article question....

  • @reyreyes6126
    @reyreyes6126 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Aquinas took his thinking habit reading the works of Aristotle on Logic: Topicorum, Perihermeneias, Prior and Posterior Analyticorum, Sophistical refutations---because Logic is the science and art of thinking necessary to all sciences to include Theology as a science. One needs to be an Aristotelian like Aquinas to think like him i.e., as a philosopher. But one needs to be a philosopher to be a Theologian. No theologian can claim as one without Philosophy recommended by the Church from Leo XIII to present.

This is extremely interesting and helpful.
Just one suggestion? It seems to be a lot of information packed in, and so it felt rushed.
Would it be possible to either spread a session out to longer than 1 hour; or else break down the topic into shorter segments? (Not this topic in particular, but for future videos?)
Might be relevant for me to note that I am a slower-paced mind, so my suggestion might not suit many other viewers. At any rate, thank you for sharing these for free to us.... they are priceless.

In his sed Contra St. thomas quoted Genesis "I am who am" not tying to be funny but to set the revealed truth to hint that the First Mover, First Cause...he established by the Five Ways whom we understand as God is identical to the Revealed God. Because the God of the five ways are reduced to the refer to the IPSUM ESSE SUBSISTENT whose being is identical with its existence St. Thomas identified as I am who am the same IPSUM ESSE SUBSISTENT of Reason. Many theologians missed this important point when they assess the Five Ways.

Aquinas did the best he could with the information available to him during his lifetime. Basically he knew Squat. The 1200's was a period 200+ years prior to the Renaissance and the start of scientific knowledge of the world around him. He was also living 600+ years before the discovery of Natural selection and how we came to be upon this little blue dot. He was working from pure ignorance and the theistic default position that a god/s existed. At least Aquinas had an excuse due to his birth place in history. Anyone currently attempting to show a god/s exists with his thoughts and arguments is truly ignorant of the world around them.
