I've always been a huge John Prine fan, and just discovered John Moreland a few days ago, and it was the BEST find ever! He is nothing short of fabulous! :)

John Prine was great, but really Moreland is the star of the show. His voice is familiar, soothing, like a grandfather who has lived a long life and has endured much heartbreak. Except he's only in his 30s. What a grand fucking talent he is.

John Calvin Abney plays some of the most well-placed fills in all of music. Not too much, not too little. Just enough to serve the song.

Fuckin' J.P. deserves better than this. I wonder if it wouldn't be better than this, to let him wonder where he'd like to play for the music's sake, and that of the feeling,...like some impromptu dive bar appearance where he is loved for what he's saying, and ....oh, well,..shit,...tha's just my selfish personal dream. To just meet up with J.P. in some dive and start talkin' about life, ..then music,.. and he starts playing a song or two, and I get to join with him.
There was a homeless older guy named Travis, up here in Portland in the '80's i met in a dirty dive I loved on lower Burnside, who carried his guitar, and took it out in there, and played several John Prine songs for me. I had heard John's radio songs, the "Illegal Smile" and Meulenberg County but this opened up a whole world of insight into the human condition to which I could relate,.....I spent alot of time learning and playing John's songs,...and sought out Travis up on NW 23rd at the dives, evenings, before he went home to his camp up in Forest Park .I can only figure Travis is long gone now, in 2018, as I even wondered about him 20 years ago.. ....time.......Still, I wonder if it would have been easier to keep track of time, and keep a steady pace of it, had it not been for the confusing turn of the century. I've always viewed numbers in their sets of 10. After the turn of a hundred, they start taking a different geometric shape in my mind. I can't help but feel that has allowed me to be unable to stay on track with everything.
I grew up with even sets of decades. mentally. Visually. Then the hundreds turn came and nothing starts a new pattern till after the teens. If this is nonsense to you, then ignore it.
Oh. Wait. Nevermind. It was the speedballs,..Late '80's,...and 90's. God bless to you Travis.
