    I’m pasting someone else explanation, can’t remember the name, but one of the best explanation:
    Lateralus is written with very complicated time signatures which is why it was initially hard for you to pick up the rhythm.
    It approximates the Fibonacci sequence in the first section, which is mathematically significant. The Fibonacci sequence starts with the number 1, and then each number is added to the sum that precedes it. 1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21-34-55-89... and so on. In this case, Tool plays the intro in 9/8, 8/8, 7/8, or 9-8-7. 987 is the 16th number in this sequence. Maynards lyrics/vocals for the first few verses also follow the Fibonacci sequence very closely with each syllable. If you were to sing along, it would look like this: "Black(1)...then(1)...white are(2)...all I see(3)...in my in-fan-cy(5)...Red and yel-low then came to be(8)..." and then in reverse back down to 1 as the verse(s) continues.
    The sequence is contextually significant as well as it translates visually into a spiral. The message in the song is about pushing yourself with experience to constantly expand your mind/consciousness,... to evolve onward and outward; much like a spiral. This is accentuated with the last passages of the song as "Spiral Out... Keep Going...".

      Yeah that's good explanation. Additionally, to simplify it, While it does show up elses where, a person can hear the sequence in the lyrics easy enough. Count the syllables..
      1 black
      1 then
      2 white are
      3 all I see
      5 in my infancy
      It is the golden ratio and if you take a line with an arch in those proportions it will create a spiraling out image. The pattern is simple enough by adding the number to the previous number (ex. 1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+2=5, etc)
      To the statement just feel the music and ignore the thought, creativity, message, ingenuity.. and to end it calling you a dope. Was ignorance. But it was for people like that the song "hooker with a penis" was made.. lol.. as long as he buys it, it's cool. There is a remedy for folks like that put out by puscifer as well.

    The Fibonacci sequence is the sequence of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two numbers before it. So 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13... If you graph the sequence as tiles with squares of the length of the number of the sequence, and connect the opposite end of each square, the pattern forms a spiral.
    The spiral pattern of the sequence comes up over and over again in nature, from spiral galaxies to the arrangement of petals in flowers, branches and leaves on trees, even in the stories of mollusk shells.
    The sequence is the hidden language of nature.
    The syllables in most of the song follow the sequence Black (1) Then (1) White are (2) all I see (3) in my infancy (5) red and yellow then came to be (8) reaching out to me (5) let's me see (3).
    I don't know what more can be said of this song other than it's a tour de force.

    Been listening to TOOL everyday since 1990 seen them 12 times 13 coming November 20th 2023 in Toronto 🤘🏼
    I can still remember hearing this sing for the first time it gave me GOOSEBUMPS & everytime hearing it after it still does I have them now listening to this video as I type this.
    T⚙️🗜L is & always will be my favorite band my 🥈nd favorite is Black Sabbath.

    The single greatest song ever. You guys do have the lyrics up for these while listening, right? Maynard’s lyrics are simply magical. If not, I’d like to see new reaction videos to each of the TooL songs you’ve already done but with lyrics. It’s a funny thing TooL does...as their songs almost fit together like a puzzle. The lyrics and what the song is about are the last piece of their puzzle. Although one could argue it’s the first.

    This song, for me, has to be one of the greatest there is. Everything that goes into it is just on a whole other level. The concept for how they built it, the way the song flows and changes and evolves as it progresses. The drums are an everpresent and dominating force without overpowering everything else going on, the guitar is played beautifully, and the bass accompanies it in amazing ways. Everything kind of just flows in and out away from each other and just keeping intertwining as they go. And, of course, Maynard's lyrics and their delivery is truly something incredible. Everything from the guitar solo half-way through and on is wonderful in ways I don't think I'll ever get over. It just speaks to the soul.

    Also the fibonacci sequence describes the spirals found everywhere in nature from snail shells to galaxy structure, it's the spiral contained within the golden ratio (which is very easy to understand but I can't do it without diagrams lol)

    Fibonacci Sequence is an infinite thing. 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34, and on. You add the current number to the previous one. so 1,1 becomes 2. 1+1=2. The 2 is added to the 1 before it which gives you 3. The 3 plus the 2 before it becomes 5. 5 added to the 3 before it becomes 8. And so on. The syllables in the verse are what create the Fibonacci sequence in the song. And the drums follow the pattern as well. As do the time signatures. 9/8 8/8 7/8. 987 was the original title of the song and, not likely a coincidence, is also the 16th number in the Fibonacci Sequence. You have the Golden Spiral or Golden Ration which is a spiral pattern seen throughout nature and the universe. Numerically the Golden Ratio is 1.618. Maynard starts signing at 1:37.       No doubt, right? LOL! I nearly spat out the big swig of water I’d just taken. Talk about insight. She is the first person I’ve ever heard make that immediate connection without any prior knowledge of the song having been written to the timing of the Fibonacci Sequence...as you said 1+2+3+5+8. Intuition indeed.
