      I know right? Do you know if any other sports league in which players do anything similar to the NBA load management?
      The European soccer season is pretty intense, and some of the teams play extra games nearly every week through the champions league which necessitates travel out of the country for away games. So they play a weekend in their own country, travel for Wednesday game into another country, then fly back home for another game on the weekend.

      As much as I enjoy basketball, this load management stuff is embarrassing, the amount of money the players are on and they can’t suit up any play 65+ games a season…NBA needs to start point deductions if unless injured, players sit out more than X amount of games

    It is almost the same with any athletic activity if you don't consistently do it, take time off, and then try to ramp up to 100%...you are going to hurt yourself. Load managing really isn't prolonging anything. Kawhi has played 264 less games than bad back Larry Bird and Larry was only in the NBA for 2 more season than Kawhi currently and only played 6 games in 88-89. It is just prolonging that check cause they ain't playing more games.

    • @Sqeaky6969
      @Sqeaky6969 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's the problem teams rest players so they get healthy which is fine. The main issue with that is they'll go from a night off to playing nearly 40 minutes the next day. The reason it worked for the spurs is cus their "load management" was minutes based. 39 yo duncan played 77 games as the anchor of a championship defense. For all the talk about LeBron's longevity he cant even get to 60 games consistently anymore

    • @arguseyed9982
      @arguseyed9982 ปีที่แล้ว

      Difference is getting another max contract. We are talking about almost double the money in a single season than what Bird made in his entire career. So yeah, players today have all the incentive to try prolong their careers as much as possible and care less about accomplishments and winning. Or even playing.

  • @smoothjulio

    What is crazy is the NBA is not a grueling league physically. Contact is basically against the rules, and the time outs, fouls, out of bounds and commercials stop the game every 2-3 minutes at most.
    They “play” 36 minutes but with 10-12 breaks in those minutes, the game goes on for two hours and they only travel on average 2.5 miles in that time.

Which is weird because when I was growing up I couldn't stand football and only watched the NBA. As much as I despised David Stern for not giving Kobe Chris Paul for "basketball reasons" he would have never allowed the nonsense we see transpiring today. The only perimeter player in history to average over 30+ points a game could lead the league in scoring whilst simultaneously being one of the greatest defenders and did so with consistency. Jordan was almost mythological. I wouldn't believe in half the things he did if footage of it didn't exist of it.

    Sorry for the paragraph below and I'm not looking to spark a debate, and thank you Commissioner for another amazing vid. Here goes:
    This is why the NBA should shorten the season. It would compensate for the games that aren't played. They should find a rough estimate of the average amount of games played by all players and modify the number of games towards that number. An in season tournament isn't going to change the players perspective on regular season importance. Lowering the number of games may not lower the intensity of the season, but would make load management not look as bad and could lower the rate in which it occurs.

    Nah, I kinda agree. When a season is 82 games, any given game loses all meaning. A shorter season would put more value on each specific game played.
    Do NOT think this is me supporting load management. I just think the NBA season is too drawn out.
    They sometimes have 10+ games on a night. Drop that to 4-6 and I can actually watch them all and they’ll mean more for standings.

    • @Bonobo_JoJo
      @Bonobo_JoJo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jkashdamoneyman5870 sure, but that’ll be guaranteed to have more impact on their standings for playoffs if they do sit out. That’s why injuries in the NFL are so impactful. With 17 games, every single win matters. (To be clear, not saying we do down to 20 something games, but less games makes each individual game more meaningful)

    I will never get used to teams wearing whatever uniform, whenever. I have to look at the logo at center court. Then find that name on a colorful jersey to tell who the "home" team is. For seventy (70)+ years, home teams in White worked just fine. A sloppy, confusing mess.

    How can the NBA actually prove if a player doesn’t need load management? Accusing a guy of malingering might look bad. There are many types of injuries for which there is no test to prove or disprove it. Soft tissue injuries and concussion, for example.

    • @kokoro_gospel

      Hamstrings are a perfect example of such soft-tissue issues. They can be tricky and linger for an extended period of time depending on the severity of the initial injury.

      I’m answering my own question here, because I just looked it up a few days after this video. CBS has a Sept 2023 article that says “the criteria is simple: if you’ve been named to an All-Star team, or an all NBA team in the previous three seasons, you’re a star.“ Being a “star” gives 49 players the right to load manage and of course the list includes European raised players.

    This ESPECIALLY sucks if you happen to live in a town like I don’t know…Detroit? The best players won’t show up because why try against a young rebuilding team when it’s also not a massive market? Like even if you aren’t a fan of whatever small market team you live by it still hurts you since your favorite players will likely be “injured” just about every time they come to your city.

    Load management became a thing around the Tail end of Tim Duncan's career around 34. This helped his game and pushed him to play until 40. Also he won one more chip. Both Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.
    It works with an aging star but load management on a young guy in their prime years will actually shorten their career or not love the game as much for a pay check. It the NBA did shorten the season would players also take a cut on their pay? 😂
    These young guys have it great right now.

      82 games is stupid, alright. They wanna milk the fans for the price of more tickets, but don't give them the value! Any fan would be in their right mind to be furious, when the gold acquisitions of their team are simply warming up the bench. In my opinion, 1 away game and 1 at home game against the same team is enough for the playoff tournament. And what would determine seeding would be stats, in case of same victory record. Players would be encouraged to give their all to all the games...
