It was certainly a different place back then wasn’t it? I actually prefer it now but there’s now denying that it was more of an adventure back then. Cheers
@marcusbww No, I haven’t been to that particular cliff but recently I put out a couple of videos from nearby cliffs. If you make the effort to go there IMO it’ll be worthwhile visiting some of the other nearby cliffs too.
@ I will for sure. I’m then driving to Kanchanaburi and down to Trang over the month. I saw those videos. Isaan has some cool stuff especially Ubon. I’ve done loads of your videos too after watching. Wat Phu Tok definitely the best.
great stories karl ur memory is very good indeed, im thinking the small chap at the end was saying dont forget to subscribe and smash the like button plenty more videos to come🤣
great stories. I just did some google to give this period some perspective. Cambodia's pol pot regime most powerful years were 1975-79. the hollywood movie "killing fields" was released in 1985. so it makes sense that the country was still in turmoil for years later, and that created the setting for your experiences.
That’s exactly it Donald, it’s a fascinating period. The Khmer Rouge were often fed at the refugee camps on the Thai border who weren’t allowed to discriminate for political reasons and then they would’ve-enter Cambodia to act as a guerrilla army. It never really ended until about the time of Pol Pot’s death.
I see, thanks. A Khmer translated it for me afterwards. I did realise that he mentioned Covid but decided to just leave him to it. I found it quite funny tbh.
It's weird Karl. You come across as such a normal person - no offense - yet you are propelled into these weird situations almost like clockwork. I think you made the right decision staying in SE Asia instead of plodding the hamsterwheel back home like the rest of us. Keep them good stories coming.....🙂
My partner is Cambodian. She has some shocking stories about her experiences with the Khmer Rouge. Most of her family managed to get out the country one way or another. I find it a bit like the wild west when I visited twice, much prefer Thailand.
Great stories, that chopper looked crazy! I went to Phnom Penh with a mate in 2003, the owner of the guest house tried to lock us in at night, saying that it was too dangerous to walk the city after dark, I had the feeling it was just a ploy to get us to buy his beer though 😄 As you say, I don't remember any Tuk Tuks, just motorbike taxis
Hey Karl that was a great video and mirrors stories from friends that lived there and still live there, you are such a great storyteller your stories are dripping wirh action and realism and i really appreciate your hard work making these videos.
You had a lot of flight time in Cambodia Karl !! I was there in 2000 in Phnom Penn for a few days. Got there on Vietnam Air from Saigon. Took a mini van back to Saigon via Moc Bai. There was a grenade size crater every 3 meters. Literally. That was part of the Khmer Rouge defense policy that took ages to get erased with real pavement. I remember Heart of Darkness and Martini's and the Central Market well. Some 13 year olds with AK-47's were burning tires in the street across from Heart of Darkness on of those nights and I asked a guy what that was all about. He said it was a mafia road block and they would take everything except your underpants if you went by there or if you took a motorcycle taxi. Apparently the car taxi's were off limits for the shakedowns. The Killing Fields and S-21 I can remember vividly.
It’s certainly changed a lot Mal. I can also remember the original Martini’s…what a place that was, I also did the land crossing from HCMC in 2002. Overall I think I prefer Cambodia the way it is today but there’s no denying that it was much more of an adventure back then. Cheers
Wow, I’m sure that would be quite a story. I can only imagine how tough that must have been after all that Cambodia had been through. Hopefully you were able to find some of them.
Great stories mate, that helicopter flight must have been outstanding! Amusing seeing Alan and Ian in the vids too. You look well mate. Keep up the great content, Neil
The helicopter ride was great Neil in that it came out of nothing…”The road is dangerous, do you want to take the helicopter? Lifetime memories for 20 bucks lol. Actually Ian and myself were talking about you last week. Cheers buddy
Let Ian know I lost my Line account, so lost his contact, would be great to connect with him again. Best to both of you. Base Camp Everest is looming! 😮
Nice one 👍. I think 96 was my first time in Phnom Penn. I remember i got a motorcycle bloke to drive me around all night for a dollar, i'd heard about Martini's so told him to take me there at the end of the night. It was pitch black going through the streets, he drove for ages, i was starting to get a bit worried then all of a sudden its there and what a night, ended up there every night. The next year i went and got the boat up the river to Siem Reap. It was an eye opener at that time when you were used to Thailand.
I’m with you. I also went to Martini’s on my first trip…I wish I could tell the story lol. Funny thing is that Martini’s had 3 locations and I only ever visited the first a few times, never went to the others. But yes, it seemed like you were being taken to lord knows where and it wasn’t unknown for the police to hold you up at gunpoint although it never happened to me lol. Cheers for sharing your own memories
Fantastic video Karl, thanks for introducing me to Cambodia. The little guy at the end was hilarious, looked like he was coming home from work. Any idea what he was saying? Have a great day!
Thanks. Someone else said in the comments that he was reciting a message that was broadcast a lot during the pandemic. I did realise at the time roughly what he was referring to but decided to ignore it and see the funny side of it. Cheers
Super video Karl, love to hear those stories, those first trips always leave such vivid memories. My first trip to Asia was to Vietnam in 98 - remember sprinting through the airport at KL to get the connecting flight to Hanoi - I just made it but my bag didn’t! Bag arrived 3 days later plus 200USD compensation. The 200USD lasted me a full week! Then in Hanoi I went out for drinks one night and couldn’t remember the hotel name 😂 to get back. The tuk tuk taxi guy was driving me all over Hanoi for 30 minutes until I finally recognised the street!😂😂
Had some crazy things happen there for sure. I was truly shocked when the tuk tuk driver took that video at face value. He was really angry and frustrated that he couldn’t find it.
Happy Herb Pizza then beers at the backpacker area on the lagoon which has been filled in. That lagoon on sunset was a great place to enjoy the after-effects of the pizza! Another great place was the Foreign Correspondence Club as well as Sharkies ....well the list could go on! Oh Martinis after midnight 😂😂😂
Excellent video!! That house where "The Pub" is now, used to be the headquarters of "The Bayon Pernick" Magazine. I remember a few interesting expat print magazines out of Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. It seems like a lifetime ago.
Awesome and so valueble !!! 20,- USD for a flight in a monsterhelicopter. The running away from the woman story was soooo funny !!! Also as a single I always take a ringsingers ring with me to get rid of fanatic females ...
It doesn’t happen to me that often and I was quite shocked how scary it actually was. Actually it carried on with the same lady on my next visit there a few months later. I should have told that story too!
Yes, Steve, a Khmer told me what he was talking about afterwards. She said that he’d approached her in the past and that he was a bad man lol. No harm done, I found it all quite funny tbh
That helicopter looked like it had seen better days. I think I would have taken my chances on the bus. You got a good story out of it though. I thought you were going to have your phone snatched there while you were warning of phone snatchers! Great, funny memories Karl. Brilliant ending that epitomizes the nonsense of South East Asia lol
We’d already said yes and paid before we saw it lol. I had second thoughts while we were sitting in the cargo area but the cockpit was a lot nicer. It was a big lump and it would have left quite a crater if it had come down.
It was a bit old looking. The stories the pilots told us about the Khmer Rouge taking potshots at it didn’t help. Yes, I probably would, I have an incurable sense of adventure. Cheers
Do you know what. I walked past it but never even looked. Actually I was disappointed to find out that the FCC doesn’t exactly have all the history people associate with it having only been opened in the 90’s. Great view and happy hour cocktails though. Cheers
Don’t recall any in 96 and that video I took in 2005 doesn’t show any but they probably were around by then. As for the visa price in 1996….just asked chat GPT and it said $20-30 so perhaps we both remember correctly

When I left she followed me and she said let's go my hotel... so we got on a motorbike taxi and back to her hotel which way too nice for a local. In her room was a picture of a white guy swinging a baseball bat in a park... I said who's that? She said "oh, him boyfriend, don't worry him working casino in Singapore" I thought I hope he doesn't come back tonight..lol... I found it a bit much in Phnom Penh and I was glad to get back to Thailand. I'd got into listening to this Khmer singer called Touch Sry Nich? It was certainly a very different place then compared to today. Everyone one assumes that it was better in the past and while it was certainly more of an adventure back then I actually prefer it today. Cheers
As a Cambodian, I love to hear stories from barangs' perspective. It's all fascinating to me.
That’s great. I’m happy to hear that Khmer people are watching my video. I have more videos from Cambodia coming out soon. Cheers
Fascinating stories mate. Never lived lived till you've had a stalker 😂😂
It was scary Ant and she even latched onto me on my next trip there a few months later. I should have told that story too!
Did you eventually give in 😅😅@@karlsthailand
Amazing memories and well told story mate I love the transitioning to the different places Great edit well done
Thanks very much. Yes, I think it comes over better if you make the effort to go to the actual locations.
Just spent 2 hours going over some of mine ...you got me all sentimental 😅@@karlsthailand
Nothing wrong with being sentimental sometimes
You had a very interesting time here in South East Asia and had many great experiences. Another great video to share with us. 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it. People like this type of video but unfortunately my memories are a limited commodity
Very entertaining video Karl. Laughed a lot and loved it. Hope all is well with yu and hopefully catch next May.
All good Roger. I finally got back out there mate!
this video made my day ....
Glad to hear it. Cheers
I really enjoy these "then and now" stories. Tops vid. Watching from Australia. 👍
I like doing them when I think I have enough memories to make it work. Cheers
@xeroxene l also love the now and then stories , even better if Karl puts on photo's!.
Very interesting video. I first went there in 1999 and 1 thing I remember was cars without registration plates. It stuck in my mind.
It was certainly a different place back then wasn’t it? I actually prefer it now but there’s now denying that it was more of an adventure back then. Cheers
Good stuff. The little guy at the end repeating the COVID phone call tone is hilarious.
Yes, I’m sure there’s an untold story or two behind him. Cheers
Awesome mate I love your traveling stories, I miss the 80s and 90s so much wish we could have them back again !!
I would be quite happy if I could return the UK back to what it was in the 80’s too tbh. Cheers
My favourite style of video!!!! Love it
Thanks, unfortunately I only have so many memories I can relate.
