Steadicam Solo in action

  • Steadicam Solo is a light-weight, extremely manoeuvrable Steadicam, which can be used in traditional Steadicam fashion with mechanical arm and body vest, or in hand-held configuration where the arm of the operator is used to support and guide the Steadicam.
    Steadicam Solo is a completely mechanical device, requiring no power and works due to the principles of balance and momentum. As a result, the Steadicam shines when it comes to quick grab shots or complex setups.
    Solo also functions as a monopod - simply fold in the weighted wings and set the length to whatever you are desire. One can quickly flip between Steadicam or monopod filming.
    Solo can hold a camera up to 10lb (4.5kg) in weight, however, the amount of weight which can be managed in handheld setup, as shown in the video above, is determined by the strength of the operator.
    The test camera being shown is a JVC GY-LS300, which balances perfectly on Steadicam Solo. For larger and heavier cameras it is necessary to work with the Steadicam arm and vest - with the weight then being supported by the operators body.
    Steadicam Solo is amazingly affordable, selling for £300 + vat in the UK and less than $500 in the US. The price is more expensive if purchased with arm and vest. Regardless, Steadicam Solo, in either configuration, represents serious value to the customer and tremendous power in terms of what can be achieved in Steadicam mode, for moving shots, or for more traditional shooting when working with Solo as a monopod.

    One of the best product reviews ever put on TH-cam. Real world examples of product use. Great commentary and information. Brilliant. Thanks for producing & uploading this, greatly assists people making an informed decision about Steadicam Solo.

    Rick Young is a legend in the video production world. I first bought one of his books on FCP years ago whilst interested in video production (and working a crappy job at the time). Fast forward all these years and I now run my own production company full time. It's people like Rick Young that do these type of reviews for free and can help many many people just like me follow my dream. Thanks Rick!

    If you don't work for steadicam you should! This is great and practical. You usually have to settle for one or the other. Makes me glad I made this purchase. Thank you very much!

    Excellent review. I purchased a Steadicam Solo a while back on sale for about $130. I never used it. But after watching this excellent review I took it out of the box and I now use it all the time with my Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera. With practice it really is an excellent piece of gear. I won’t be jumping on the gimbal bandwagon anytime soon. Thanks for the review and inspiration.

    I've just ordered this exact setup. (ls300 and steadicam), in part because of the art of the possible you showed us in this video. This is exactly what I was looking to upgrade to, a self contained rig that allows for smooth camera movement and doesn't attract undue attention. Well done!

    I just bought this Steadycam Solo based on this video, i can confirm its simply brilliant! You need a good strong arm but its absolutely smooth as butter! Love it!

    Bravo to you, sir.
    I just bought one of these and as I was looking at the setup, I thought to myself....OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO? I like that you mention your own shortcomings and that you are at "the beginning of your Steadicam journey." I was a little skeptical when I opened the box and read the quick set up guide. But your video has given me greater confidence that I have purchased a cool product for what I do.
    I just need to put in the time.

    Thank you Rick for the depth of your review. Well done. Like you, I will not use a vest. One concern I have is the handle and I am surprised it is not discussed more in reviews as it is uniquely different to comparable brands, being thinner and extending out further. Most other stabilizer handles are wider, closer in and support more vertically, so the weight appears to be supported more directly by the hand. To my mind there would be more strain with the steadicam solo handle as the hand is bent over to hold it rather than a fist shape...which I would think would be easier to hold for a longer time. Owners reviews on B&H seem to complain more than other brands about the strain. Can you comment on this and have you been able to compare with something like the the Laing P-04s which also seems a popular model at a similar price, but with a larger more vertical handle. Thanks again.

    i have one and i gotta admit it gets pretty tiring after only a few minutes of shooting - and I just have a regular DSLR. for heavier cameras i would recommend getting the vest and arm simply because you'd get worn out just by doing a few shots especially for longer takes.

    looks good but the 4th axis movement is still very noticeable, im sure its with operator practice. I miss having a steadicam but im loving the 3 axis gimbal.
    Also the drift is very noticable, the problem with these units is they have to constantly.. and I mean constantly rebalanced. I had these at weddings and they were great but we had to set the unit aside and make sure no one touched it

    Very will done! I especially enjoy your comments about the philosophy of using a steadicam ",... balance is everything," "really have to think about your shots ..just because its a marvelous tool {doesn't mean} you don't have to think any more," "its like a ballet in a way, when you move its an extension of your body,"" ..sometimes the gentler the shot the nicer the shot with just a tiny bit of movement, " "You have to work at it, its how good you are," " between your skill and the equipment is how the magic happens").
    Are these raw videos or did you also use the video stabilizer in your editing software?

    Thanks for doing this review! I'm only part way through watching and becoming more motivated to buy the Solo the more I watch! One question. Is there any image stabilization being performed by either the camera or the lens you're using?

      I don't think zoom lenses are suitable for steady cams, you need a wide angle prime pre focused.

    • @Biketherapy113
      @Biketherapy113 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      probably because he can't count, he counts to 2 and then the steadicam is still dropping for another 2 seconds and he says there ya have it my camera is balanced with 2 second drop time..

    • @lucian823
      @lucian823 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      no, he just has no idea how to operate it, the first shots of him, shows him not holding it correctly... his left hand should be underneath the gimbal, and that is where you control; horizon, and tilt. (basically every axis).

    • @Biswash
      @Biswash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please dont be that harsh guys..think that he is new to the equipment that its just the start of his steadicam journey as he has mentioned....he has never stated the fact that he is pro and i dont think he'd balanced that smooth since he said he has no idea how to balance it upside down so someone at steadicam might've told him to tell it should be about 2 second as he did say that. I have found this video quite helpful btw

    Thank you. Such a weight removed from my poor brain when I considered shooting iPhone exclusively - hm, let's see, 32 GB is not enough memory, how much is a used iPhone with 256 GB, hm, should I get an electronic gimbal? But there are soooo many 1-star Amazon reviews. Hm, then how about the Freefly Movi. Bluetooth, oh boy it can bork the connection to the phone requiring a reboot at inopportune moments, and then it's $69 for counterweights and more for add-on lenses...and...and. When I contemplate going wireless the sun comes out and the birds begin to sing.

    Hi,
    may I give you a kind hint: You must learn to use the so called "two handed technique" - otherwise you lack a big portion of the ability of your stabilizing system - and you will improve the use of your Steadicam Solo. You'll find this topic in the Steadicam EFP Training Manual at about 0:44:50 - and you will instantely understand, what that means.
    Kind Regards Andreas
