What comes across here (to me) is that Joni senses how nervous the interviewer is and she reacts to it with kindness and generosity. And, at the same time, it seems to relax her, and allows her to riff on art and music in a very cool way.
Sometimes I hope that the more I hear Joni speak, the more i absorb her intellectual way of speaking, such wit and a way with words. This is why she’s an amazing artist.
Interpreting her music and her arts, and later the videos has lent some understanding of her. These interviews allow the connections of what could seem to be disparate venues into the whole genius that is Joni. I'm so glad to enjoy the many parts.
i worked with joni in london during the promo for dog eat dog in 1985, the only time i was nervous/starstruck during 20+ years in the music business - she was full of grace and had incredible presence
Joni's voice is so mellifluous. I could listen to her talk for hours just to hear the sound, the overall tone of her voice. Having grown up in Michigan, I always loved the Canadian accent anyway, but Joni's light and brightness adds something extra to it.
You can tell how deeply Joni's dedicated herself to literal arts even just by the way she talks casually. In today's awkward music we don't get that exquisite vocabulary in an abundant scale, and some are stupid enough to criticize a delicate selection of lyrics for being contrarian, which I really feel sad about, despite the fact that occasionally they do have a valid point, when it comes to those people not knowing how to properly word but tending to pretend. But Joni's really a rare great lyricsmith and her work is poetic.
Bravo to the "dumb little show in Covina" for requesting and getting the interview, and to the interviewer for having the class to not get in the way of the artist.
I will defend Jeff to the death, he was thrown at this with very little experience, which does, in fact show. But we were a dumb little show in Covina getting a surprise "YES" to an interview we requested. I will always think of this as gold. Jeff might have been nervous, but it didn't hinder Joni at all, because she spoke interesting stuff. Sorry, protective I know.
I think Jeff was appropriate, respectful and right on topic; very important to Mitchell who does not like interviews. I'd rather see this interview than any of the usual insensitive garbage that passes for interviews on the networks. thumbs up!!!
Marty Getz I'm surprised at the need for a defense because he gets a great interview from Joni Mitchell, and she clearly liked his questions and enjoyed answering them.
@17.12 - MultiRacial - "He/She/It "- cross gender. THIS IS JONI 30 YEARS AGO. Completely ahead of her time. As always. Musical genius. Self taught. Painter. Dancer. LOVE HER
So cool that you got this interview and she shared so much with you! This was in Covina? Wow... Joni Mitchell in Covina... who knew! I mean, I'd imagine her in West LA or the Valley something like that. Anyway, I love her interviews, I always find something meaningful to think about, she's so down to earth and no attitude or conceit, she's great. .::Gary
At one point she was smoking about four packs a day (probably around the time of this interview). She always smoked like a chimney. Hard to find any video or pictures of Joni where she doesn’t have a ciggie in her hand lol
Oh, straight out. . . I am as gay as gay can be. But I certainly without any hesitation can see and hear just how so many men found her so captivating. I've loved her music since I was far too young to even know her name. I bet she is a truly incredible person to know and share conversation with. You rarely encounter people who are so dedicated to their art (in the forms that resonate with them) and who are able to express themselves easily about the things they think about. There is no pretension, just authenticity, and that too is so very rare. I only wish today's generation recognized just how valuable she is and has been to music, and the inclusion of women within the industry.
I agree. By the way, not on subject, I consider Covina to be my hometown because although we lived in various places in California, I still consider Covina to be my hometown. As for Joni, she’s phenomenal and I e remained a fan since her beginnings and throughout. Only some of her 80’s music is hard for me to get into because I loved her lyrics, of course, but the musical style is just not my favorite. I so love everything up to Don Juan’s Restless Daughter and then I kinda cruise through a few more. I soo love Mingus. Thank you, Joni for sharing your valuable time here. It’s always so wonderful and special to hear you speak. ☮️&💟
Thank you for this! In the info of the last part of the interview, the one that you say is already posted, it says that this was in May 1989, but here it says 1988.
Any interview of Ms. Mitchell, especially from long ago, is a gem. You did a fine job. And Ms. Mitchell was her usual insightful, acerbic, graceful self. A great interview.
Covina is a small city out in sort of the outskirts of Los Angeles, slightly north-east from Downtown LA. I just wouldn't think Joni would go to of all places, unexciting, Covina. I mean, its a nice city, but its Joni... in Covina? Hope Mr. Getz isn't offended... its just rather odd an funny, its as if Joni was oh I don't know... also happened to one day also be in... Cudahay or... Montecito Heights :^D g
Joni is so intelligent on so many levels ,it would be hard for most of us to keep up

Spot on comment? Well said.
Didn't sense that she was at all reacting to his nervousness. And he didn't seem nervous.
@@HomeAtLast501 maybe not nervous, perhaps neurotic.
She is the essence of graciousness
@@HomeAtLast501 yes he is very nervous

That'd be incredible and interesting for me to hear. London too!

She influenced me like no other singer/ songwriter. I listened to her endlessly in my youth. I love her.
Lovely, relaxed interview! The interviewer did a brilliant job - all about Joni, not about his ego. Superb!
Always so gracious when people compliment her work .
Joni is such a beautiful person inside and out.
she's so very generous. beautiful.thx for sharing.

He sounds fine. Most interviewers try to to make it about themselves.
Its a great interview, period.
yes, he had a habit of interjecting his little "right" and "yeah" etc etc which detracted a bit from and was distracting from her answers

Joni is 46 here and looks incredible!
Cute kid, thoughtful questions. She was very generous and forthright with him.
Well done on all parts. Straight-forward. Very informative.
I would like to see the Lakota video.
What a beautiful and talented woman.

Lakota is a great protest song..Captures well the clash of cultures and depth of an indigenous people who have endured much and triumphed in spirit...
This is so cool. What a lucky interviewer.
Thank you very much for sharing this.
She tore a match from a book of matches, of all things. She didn't strike the match until 11-1/2 minutes later.
Great. Thanks for posting.
I love her, she seems to like holding a cigarette even if it's not lit, smoked since she was 9 years old

It was the fact that you were just a modest public access show that appealed to her
I have every record and love them all, deeply.
no regrets, coyote 😍
Good interview. :)
Just to be clear, the interview was not conducted in Covina, it was at Peter Asher's office in Hollywood.
The eyes!

P.S. I am not gay though I agree with your Joni comments 😎.
This lady doesn't belong in the 60's.....she belongs on my headphones.

so LOVE her work...sorry to see a cigarette in her hand. Her VOICE is so precious

She should've hire Adrian Belew.
She's around 46 years old here.
Who decides to vacuum during a interview
+2002films Somebody outside, they didn't know what was going on on the other side of the wall.
Zoom in, zoom out
Art Linkletter is jewish too. He hails from Saskatchewan, Canada likewise Mitchell.
Why the vacuuming during the interview?
No control. That was an exec getting their car detailed outside Peter Asher's office.
thats what makes her Joni
where is Covina
where is the film with the Lakotas
Covina is about 22 miles to the east of Los Angeles, California.
All I can hear is a vacuum cleaning running.

Why didn't the interviewer mic Joni and not himself and WTH is going on in the background. Incredible!
They were both mic'd. This was Peter Asher's office and we had no control over what went on outside that window.
She looks like Elizabeth Olsen
MALACHITE : )
Terrible interviewer
What? Why do you say that? Everyone else said how he did fine. How relaxed do you feel you’d be interviewing Joni Mitchell?
