  • Ahead of the release of their film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, actors Ayushmann Khurrana, Jitendra Kumar and filmmaker Hitesh Kewalya talk to Anupama Chopra about making a film around homosexuality. They talk about the stigma attached, trying to cast a gay actor for the role and why the masses in India are still homophobic.

    'This is what happens when a straight guy plays a gay character' - this criticism came at the time of Article 15 also, when an upper caste director made a movie about Dalits, or when Bhumi played a dark-skinned character in Bala. I don't agree. Representation is important, but it is equally important for these social issues to be put out in the mainstream, no matter who is doing it. Intention needs to be lauded.

    Filmmakers have their own aims when making movies. But, it is much better if such topics are made family friendly so that it reaches a wider spectrum of audience.

    So when I asked my mom, who is a hardcore homophobic to watch this film with me, she agreed. I asked her if she knew what the message of the film is going to be and she told me that she's going to watch it only for entertainment, not to learn anything, just for laughs. And as I went on trying to explain to her why this film is important, she hooted the 'gay people are sick horn' yet again. As the debate went on between me and her, she finally concluded that movies like this should not be made because they are encouraging others to be 'sick'.
    Being bisexual myself, it hurt me. I know for a fact that she will never ever be able to accept me. Although I do want her mindset to change a bit after the movie, I can't be sure for now.
    Anyway just want to tell everyone, be proud and happy of who you are. Don't let others bring you down. You are free. If someone isn't allowing you to live fully, you don't have to be with them.

    Instead of stupidly demanding that only gay people should play gay characters, what we need to do is in general have more gays, Dalits to work in the film industry playing all types of characters. In the quest to have more LGBT representation, we are limiting the roles available to gay people if we think they should play only gay characters. Also, actors should be able to play various roles; that's acting, no? Next what, only poor people should play poor characters because they could relate to poverty better? Such rules are nonsense. And filmmaking is an expensive art, unlike, say, painting. Producers are right to have known faces in their films if theys are investing huge amounts. Some time back I even saw a film critic complaining that a real cripple should have played the role of SRK in Zero. Just who are these idiots?

      With this type of movie being released in the big screens only now, in 2020, we can say that it is only the beginning of acceptance and normalisation of the LGBTQ community in various fields in India, we still have a long way to go to be able to accomplish what you wish for, but I'm sure we'll get there one day! ;)

      @@nil8126 When did I deny that? My point is if we normalize the stereotype that only gay people should play gay characters, then the number of straight characters coming their way would be adversely affected. Besides, the more important point is an actor's job is playing all types of characters as long as he or she is believable in them.

    I just enjoyed watching this film on prime video :D I loved Ayushmann's character! I think he did a superb job of representing a bold, confident, colorful gay character. It can be a fine line, having a flamboyant gay male character that isn't shown as a joke or stereotype to be mocked... especially when played by a straight actor. But Ayushmann did a superb job!
    While there is definitely benefit to LGBTQ writers and actors being able to represent themselves and use their own voices, I think it is fine for non-LGBTQ people to create and portray LGBTQ content as well. I agree that the only real "rule" is to "be empathetic."
    In my opinion, that should include working WITH LGBTQ (whether they're onscreen or behind the scenes) to make sure the content is respectful and authentic to the marginalized community being represented. And of course, there are many MANY different LGBTQ experiences... which is why there should be many different perspectives in many new films, shows, etc :)

    The acceptance of homosexuality is definitely higher today in India's younger generation than it was even 5-10 years ago. Some are still homophobic but that's because they are not sure what others think about it, so they feel awkward to be cool with it, they may be afraid of being judged for supporting it. The situation in Western countries, European nations, UK, Australia is not perfect either - there are still plenty of hate crimes committed there as well. This film is a definite step ahead for India.

If the condition is not curable medically or after some psychological sessions to confirm that noone else provoked these feelings...no criminal angle etc. , then parents do not have a choice but to accept it... But it must be a rare situation... Few girls are less feminine and few boys are less macho , it's their personal affair... But they still are normal human.

      Dhruv Singhal comparisons do not make things better; realization and passion does. We can compare bollywood films to hollywood films all day, but if these indian makers do not get that inner realization and passion to build the script, give it the vision and the patience it requires, films will always stick to being just “time-pass” films. And while looking at hollywood may inspire them, creativity is needed which is rare in India as i see only actors like ayushman and rajkumar take the risks. I see what point you are making though... no harsh feelings, just saying !

    • @MsShritika
      @MsShritika 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indian film industry focuses more on how to raise revenue and then write the script rather than the opposite.... even S Korea made PARASITE which means its high time bollywood needs to step up its game. Its not 1990 anymore
