I think we're going to be better in the long run for sure!
We have a lot of plans here, and so much property. (No building codes come in really handy as well LOL)
We just recently discovered that our property is covered in black cohosh! Which can be sold right now to a local supplier. But I can't do that.. I think if we did anything with it we would work on the opposite end by selling live plants. And therefore increasing the population but still making a profit.
So yes it's a magical place with a lot of opportunities!

I put a pond liner on my primitive hut - and then a poly-canvas tarp over that. Glad to see you using it for a living roof. I've been wondering what to do after the UV destroys the polycanvas tarp - but probably just throw some soil up there. hahahaha. Great idea. Also you are the master pallet builder!! I just started watching your channel. I dated a Kentucky woman way back when I was in my 20s - but otherwise I'm a northern Midwest person. That's very impressive that you're raising a family offgrid. Thanks for your channel and congratulations. I can access pallets so I've been pondering using them - but I need now to double check - I don't think they're up to the same standards of your 2 x 4 pallets. I built the primitive hut as a double wattle and daub wall - so it's very well insulated with hay-clay. hahahhaa. Then I added rock wool for roof insulation. We need serious insulation - the winter gets 30 below Zero f. sometimes - I don't live there because the whole permit thing applies to any structure that is lived in. Building code is not enforced except on the state level - so I could technically live in a primitive dwelling offgrid. The sewage permit is the kicker and so I called the planner about getting a year-round composting toilet permit. They don't understand composting since septics don't do aerobic composting unless you get a "sludge-hammer" installed. hahahahaha. That's a cool device but requires 60 watts continuous - plus I have high water table swampy land - so also I want to save the precious trees for the birds. I only have like 3 acres of trees and then seasonal wetlands for a couple acres. hahahahaha. Just got flash flooding up there - I grow mushrooms in the woods as my farm business but this year I have had hardly any to harvest.
It's gonna be interesting to see how you finish the interior of your 28 foot tall pallet tower. hahahaha. That's awesome. I like how you explained your inner ear messing with you - yes - and how that was tied to your vision. It seems common sense to be afraid of heights - good safety reaction by the body. What else? Having your savings in change is a very creative solution! You can try a certificate of deposit to earn unearned income as long as the U.S. military empire doesn't collapse as the petro-dollar - 4 to 5 percent returns is the highest we've had in a long time. hahahahaha.

      Welcome to the journey!!
This pallet House has evolved quite a bit over the past year, our original plan (which is what we're going to do for our final house) was to do in Earth sheltered home. But you can't dig where we wanted to put this one! We're right on top of bedrock. Which also made gardening difficult but we will push through!
Once we figured out Earth sheltered wouldn't work for this particular location we decided to go with pallets and straw slip insulation. However the pallets that we got didn't have enough air flow to dry the straw efficiently. So that left only one option in our budget, the thinnest foam board they sell LOL
Technically the inside of the pallet house is finished once I put flooring down.
From here all our work is going to be done on the exterior of the house.
Yeah, we're one of those few people who knew exactly what we wanted to do from the beginning it was just getting there was the difficulty..
So that's where the change came into play LOL
The secret is.. there is no secret!
If you want to get land you're going to have to have some kind of credit and some kind of down payment. And change was the only way we could get that much money together.
Now that we're happy with where we live I put a lot of my money into silver. (Off-grid 401K LOL)
I'm glad to hear you're putting your land to use growing something!
We will be doing the exact same thing with native plants!
But unlike most people who dig them up and sell their parts we're going to go on the opposite end of the spectrum and sell live plants for those people like ourselves who want to start their own patch.
That way we're still making profit but we're encouraging the growth of these amazing plants instead of harvesting them.
Either way, I'm glad to have you along for the ride! Best of luck today and everyday!

I’ve got similar constraints… I’m in a county… but they have a policy of no interference until someone complains or dies… there were some air bnb builds that were done wrong and two guests were actually killed so they are busy with air bnb projects and anyone applying for a permit. Or the occasional complaint… I heard of an incident but don’t know if the county de homed the offending party… he just hasn’t been seen in the neighborhood since the offending incident occurred… so I’m guessing the county stepped in and his punishment was that they wouldn’t let him stay there for more than 4 months without a ‘camping’ permit per year.

    • @voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885
      @voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@OfftoShambala yes any kind of rental unit needs a permit in the county where I have land. That's the difference btwn a campground and a campsite - if there's over five tent sites than it's a campground. Actually someone on native reservation land had native activists camping there so the county went after him. He said since he was not charging money then it was not a campsite. I need to try to find out what happened - he said he was not filing for a permit. Still if someone is camping there's always the risk of a tree falling of them - which is kind of the opposite of a structural problem. thanks for sharing. I heard on the radio how some royalty in Vienna celebrated a new mansion by having a big shingdig - adding an extension with a flue to heat it - and after the guests left his whole mansion burned down from that one flue catching fire. Then he became a hermit for 20 years out of disgust. hahaha.

Instead of making any holes through the pond liner did you consider using old tires to hold it down while the living roof takes root? Not as aesthetically pleasing until the tires disappear but I think it would work?
PS any comments I make should not be taken as criticism. Not intended to be. Just throwing my two cents in for ideas.

      That's a difficult question!
Overall, this one is absolutely taller!
However, it's built on a flatter piece of land..
      - Our last tiny house (on the back side) had a 6 ft foundation before the house even began!
I will also say that when you're on top of something looking down the distance between your eyes and the ground plays to a huge Factor, and since the last place was built on the side of a cliff when your looking down that ground it significantly farther away than the bottom of the house was.
But! Our last tiny house was 12 ft tall from floor to ceiling (excluding the foundation) and this one is roughly 18 ft in that same dimension.

There is a Scottish tower built in stone that was up to 60 feet tall and almost as wide at 55 feet. These towers were fortresses and a house and home to the people who built them up over two thousand years ago. The name for them is a Broch in Celtic and actually pronounced brock in today's modern language.
If you can look them up you will see a stone tower that at the bottom the wall is up to ten feet thick having corridors and stairs leading to rooms and near the top there are places for fighting the enemy. They only had up to four floors and I heard fifty people could live inside, even the vikings have talked about them in their Saga's.
