RIME ICE WONDERLAND at Grayson Highlands/Mount Rogers

February 5, 2022 - Today we hiked 8 miles exploring around Grayson Highlands. Temperatures were cold enough and clouds were low enough for rime ice to accumulate all over making it an amazing winter wonderland. Rime ice occurs when saturation is taking place between 15-25F (also known as freezing fog). If the temperature stays low enough even after the clouds lift, the rime ice hangs around which is what happened on this hike. We took the standard route up Wilburn Ridge on the Appalachian Trail and made it all the way to the Thomas Knob Shelter.
