    Good demonstration. My control box leaked at the repair center after I had sent it in for battery replacement (after 1 yr) . It was replaced. Now I assume the Nox is not water proof. This is one of my chief reservations on the Manticore. I have left several suggestions on their FB page to demonstrate its water proofing with a real world underwater test, but nothing so far. No one will want to shell out the Manticore's price if it is just going to leak. There are cheaper, perfectly good options. I hope Minelab has solved this problem, their detectors are so good.

  • @piratelestrange
    @piratelestrange ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I think the problem is rapid temperature change. Detecting dry sand at the beach, the detector is hot. Then you submerge it into the cold water, just shocks the plastic... I love my Equinox too. On my fourth one now... Awesome demonstration with the dry ice!

      Thermal expansion is nothing new to manufacturing. Something minelab SHOULD be well aware off, unacceptable over sight if I am honest.

      The ctx leaked like a Dutch water dam

      Thermal expansion is not a manufacturing process.
      It's expansion off anything due to heat, be it the sun, the charging heat or the cooling off putting the unit in colder water
      To be brutally honest.
      It looks more like the resin bond around the charging port is not flexible and prone to cracking

      Terry, yes, yes you are. My original Nox 800 leaked up in the battery case, to they sent me another control pod-pre-covid days, they had me a new one in 8 days!!! Then, this new control pod leaked in 2020 at the height of covid, sent it in and they could NOT give me an eta on a return, as the supply lines were all messed up. So....I went out and bought a 600, as I heard they had had less leakage issues and...about 2 months ago that one went belly up in only about a foot of water while on a ring recovery in the Gulf. But...I had the new 800 control pod, so I used my 800 until the 600 came back in under 2 weeks, and they also replaced the stock coil, as one ear had a big crack in it. So...now that the 800 is out of warranty it will NOT go in the water until I can get it all sealed up!
      Glad you haven't had any issues, many of us have!

      @@flthunderdigginwrob3162 Yes, many of us had leaked issues. Last time they replaced my pod was in the beginning of 2022. From that day, i´ve never had problems anymore. i use it almost every day in the water until my chest, even for 4-5 hours directly.
      Maybe the problem was the manufactured (Malaysia) But not the project. So they made the same system for new machines...

    I bought a Manticore . Don't know when it will show up . I'm sure that Minelab knows where the Equinox leaks were coming from. From what I have seen of the Manticore , Minelab has addressed the issues people had with the Equinox. Arm cuff is now flexable , the coil ears look redesigned , and the shaft locks are also a new design . I'm sure the leak issue has been addressed . I imagine even the newer models of the Equinox may have been corrected . It costs the company money to replace a leaking machine. If they came out and said they changed the Equinox , everyone with one would want it replaced . My 600 never leaked to my knowledge . I did send it in right before my 3 year warranty expired to have it checked. They sent me a new pod a week later. Customer service has been very good from what I have seen . Looking forward to taking the Manticore out for a spin .

    My NOX 800 leaked twice all covered under warranty. The third one sent to me I sold and got a Deus II. No leaks.....and the Deus II gets gold and silver chain where the NOX does not. The Deus II is fast.....separation is just awesome. The NOX had problems with good targets near junk.
    I am sure the the Manticore will be under scrutiny for leaking and other faults. I hear the Manticore comes with water pre-installed.
    I want it to work.... the Deus II is good enough for me for now.

No cracks around the charging port. Great machine and not all of them leak. Care when removing the charging cable probably helped. Pry magnetic connector off the port by prying the rounded end up first.

    After seeing this I finally know that I am not just an extremely unlucky guy. So, 4 noxes leaked on me. First two (nox 800) leaked under warranty and they have been replaced for free. I never found out on which place they leaked. I thought it was speaker, battery seal or the coil plug. I sealed the speaker like you did. I sealed the coil plug just as you did. Didn't help. After the third leaked, without warranty, I thoroughly inspected it and found that it leaked on the power button. Just where the rubber connects the plastic body. I guess the rubber separates off the plastic after numerous turning on and off, pressing the button. That is the weak spot. Only minor failure of this type opens the control unit for water ingress. So, I bought new nox600 control unit (it is cheaper and it makes no difference for detecting in the sea). But to be sure it will not leak I had to google for the solution. I found out brilliant solution so that you can make it waterproof for almost unlimited depths. :) And for very small money, in short time, without any special work or tool. I filled it up with silicon oil. It becomes a bit heavier, speaker cant work... but I don't mind it. If someone is interested how to do it, here it goes: To fill it with silicon oil the battery plug should be removed. Fill the unit with the oil to the top. The vent (that hole on battery plug, covered with special membrane) should be opened, the membrane removed. The hole has to be sealed with silicone glue. Extra silicone glue has to be added on the outside of the plug and shaped (cant now explain the process) in such way that it makes fair contact surface with the detector shaft when you install it back to the shaft. There is a reason for it. The silicone glue, once hardened, has to be punctured through. The puncture is used to let the air and extra oil out when you put the battery plug back. Do it by inserting a bigger size needle in the puncture. Put the battery plug back in place and slowly press it in. The air and extra oil will leak out through the needle. After all extra oil is out, remove the needle and secure the battery plug with the screw. Since the silicone glue is shaped for fair contact with the shaft, the puncture is plugged with the shaft pressing on the silicone surface. The sea pressure (depth) change does not effect the control unit since there is no air in it and for this reason the seal of the puncture, made with silicone surface-shaft-contact, does not need to be perfect. Just slightly tight. And that was the 4th nox that leaked. On the same spot - power button. But this time the leakage was just tiny drop of silicone oil out. No water got in the detector. This time I sealed the contact line of power button rubber and plastic with special glue. No way it will fail again. And it is working perfectly ever since, for years now. And I am spending so much in the water diving with it.

    Gig, Thank you for your research. Look forward to your findings after the "dissection." It's obvious yours leaked at the charging port. Mine leaked through the "speaker holes" after a large wave knocked me over and the powerful rip tide dragged my 800 about 10 feet before I could grab it. The force of the water penetrated the speaker holes. I know this because in addition to water flodding my screen, I had many graines of sand inside the screen too (no other area could have allowed sand to penetrate). After my experience and your dry ice test, I'm CONVINCED there are at least 2 leaking locations. Currently I'm using the replacement pod from PA. (Don't trust it) We need to have assurances from Minelab the "Beast???" won't leak. It is a great company but needs to be accountable if I'm to get one. Until they are... I'm leaning towards a D2. The D2 has proven itself!!! Minelab has a lot at stake here. For their sake and ours, I hope they step up!

I think the design of the charging port is great…… I believe the issue is the wrong or inferior materials. I have a Minelab pro pointer 35 that developed the same cracks in the shaft with very light use absolutely no abuse! Probably the same material. Luckily I saw the cracks before it ever got wet and sealed them all with super glue but will still never submerge it. Kinda sucks having something that’s supposed to be “waterproof “ and it’s not. Manticore is a strange machine.
    The most desired up-and-coming machine. With brand new stock carbon shaft and armcup.
    Then you mount the detector, and suddenly notice that is "whobble" because of 3 spares. Ok, is good for transport and underwater, but hell...the 2 pieces from Detect-ed is perfectly "fixed", It´s another swing.
    The armcup is flexible. Wow, no breaks at all. But it´s bloody too flexible!!! have you ever tried in shallow water? A nightmare.
    Hope someone gets a solution, like the Equinox, for those 2 parts. I do trust the community.
    I´ve already seen a drowned machine, but i don´t know what is really happened. Could be an user fault...dunno. Anyway, the system is the same of the nox. Maybe with 2 0-rings i don´t remember well. There is a video of replacing unit where you can see when pushing the battery out. Same hole for the pressure too.
    I don´t now why they didn´t adopt a system like nokta makro (with flat battery into the pod).

    The Deus 2 has two different plugs, one for diving, which completely seals it, and one for land, which lets the machine breath. If you leave the diving one in, while on land, it will over pressurize from the heat. I wonder if MineLab machines are able to fully breath, due to their waterproofing. So, they get cracks from the heat, and leak in the water.

    I think the cracking is a manufacturers defect....there's no way you can cause those cracks just by plugging and unplugging the charger......It's not even a deep socket....it's basically a magnet that holds it on.

    Test the little hole in the battery bung that has the white material over it.

      How about the new units? Yours is years old and dry rotted

    • @tjstrain280
      @tjstrain280 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are new ones that leak and they are not cracked like yours

    • @tjstrain280

      Mine hasn’t leaked, YET. I did put waterproof grease over the little white hole in the battery bung.

      Before you cut it apart, seal up all those cracks around the charge port with silicone. Then add the dry ice like before, submerge it the same way, but completely in deeper water. Watch and see if any bubbles come out from the battery bung/ seal plug. I bet it bubbles out of that little 3/16” white vent hole.

    I met a guy last week while vacationing at OBX that had a waterproof equinox head unit designed by a guy in Ukraine. He said you can’t currently get them because of the Russian invasion. I wish I would have questioned him more about it but I didn’t want to interrupt his detecting. Have you heard anything about it? Thanks Gigmaster.

      Yes I was looking into it before war started.

      That guy's nickname is Sea Ghost. It seems he's resumed production of waterproof boxes for Equinox 800 recently. The guy is from Mariupol, if I'm not mistaken. You can find him on Instagram.

    Gigmaster stick with your other devices don't waste your hard earned money on the new minelab I think they should give everyone a refund for the NOX because they all flood and it seems to me that they really don't care about it and the other new detector is no better than the nox trust me don't run out to get it just because it's new

    The manticore seems like it's a good detector if you are the kind of person that spends five minutes scanning and analyzing a target before you decide to dig it....Not me.......Dig everything that way you know for sure...

    I will not buy a manticore until they refund me for all the broken coil ears and flooded controll heads i had to buy after my warranty ran out on the nox. Which probably means I won’t be getting a manticore

    And if you can find the source of leaking, don't you think mine lab would have been able to do the same and fix the damn problem? But they don't, they keep putting out the same Equinox junk knowing well that the water damage can occur over and over again. I won't buy any metal detector from mine lab for this reason!

  • @beachjunkies2378
    @beachjunkies2378 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think it's all about competition minelab got afraid because Deus 2 came out and everyone was buying it and minelab was thinking hard how to make money fast so they took two machines they already have and made it into one for $1600 just so they had a new detector on the market and was making money
