New detectorist here and I just got an Equinox 700 and went on my first beach hunt in North Florida. I found 2 pull tabs, a fishing weight, a penny, dime and quarter, all from techniques I'd seen on your channel!
Oh yes, you are most definitely a ring guy, hitting the sand is your major priority, for your most interest, in which you have found the most rings. Me, on the other hand, I'm more of a coin guy, which in turn, I'll be hitting the soil areas for most of the time. Because in what you have taught me in a great deal of your episodes, coins found in soil are usually in much better condition than coins found in, or near sand and water. A huge thanks to you for those most invaluable lessons, and I wish to learn more as your channel continues to grow, and for me to grow as a bona fie METAL DETECTORIST...And I also have to say, congrats on all those rings that you have found Merrill, YOU ARE THE KING OF RINGS! I had a blast...KUTO, to the Manticore thus far. Greg the Egg.
Hi buddy , next time you hit the beach , put Beach mode , Sand surf water . This is far better. I can tell you the Manticore is a wow metal detector , used the NOX 800 , now notable big difference, The signals are more in the way of clarity ❤, I would recommend you push up sensitivity to 27 , pull uo threshold tone to 12 , max volume. Thanks for posting another great video 🥳👍
When I look for a TH-cam channel it has to have great information, be educational so my dumbass can learn something, be entertaining because I’m ADHD and have the attention span of a gnat, have an honest & Frank presentation of facts both pros & cons, and humor is important because I’m silly as heck and Merrill you check all the boxes. While my metal detecting interest is something I have started post retirement (I was a teacher in music education for 33 years) and I admit that I’m only a relative novice with an entry level device that’s just a notch better than a backscratcher. Here I feel welcomed and not intimidated or pressured and here’s an open forum for honest information. Thanks Merrill!!
Addicted long term beach metal detectorist in the Uk. Love your vids been detecting Uk beach’s for 30 years and everything you say about reading the beach is so true. Loving the manticore reviewing - keep up the work it’s really appreciated over here in England too!
I am so appreciating your honest approach on these machines..as an old-timer looking to buy his last machine..spare no expense...Thx for the great message & delivery..your videos are actually enjoyable..lol
Found your channel not long ago just wanted say I’m really enjoying them 👍 very entertaining and informational. This is going to be one of the very few channels on my list that I get excited when a new video is available.
That silver ring you thought was a signet ring i believe is a very old class ring....At the end of the clip i saw either 18 or 19 on the side of the ring which is probably the year 1918 or 1919.... take a look at that ring in the dark shining a flaslight sideways across it to see details......awesome finds!!!!
I manual ground balanced my xs explorer,explorer2 and my excaliber 800 and my box 800.and they perform ten times better it the only way to make your machine to be set properly in the areas you hunt every where.
Back in the late 70's early 80's, I use to hunt a beach that would get its winter sand from Sandy Hook area. It would be dumped onto the dry sand as a barrier and then spread outward into the high watermark come the spring. We would find a lot of heavily corroded silver, black and thin like you showed. The jewelry was old jewelry from the 30's... The beaches erosion seamed to change in subsequent years and the sand deliveries stopped.
These videos are so good. I sold my CTX3030 and was saving the money for either the Deus 2 or the Manticore. I’ve finally decided getting the manticore when it becomes available
@@harrysurtees8710 I really like Deus but I don’t wanna deal with the little cable for it to work in water. Plus I’m just partial to the Minelab display/sounds. I think a lot of it is just preference.
@@barrett5229 I'm with you on that (preference) thing . D2 has worked excellent for me at the beach so far......However ,the screen & layout of the Manticore has the advantage over D2. It's much easier to see and navigate ... Personally for me, the lighted keypad feature while night hunting is a huge plus from the Manticore over the D2.
Merrill, Thank you for a great video with the Manticore. I received mine two weeks ago, however work has kept me from getting out detecting. It's still in the box! Once again, I appreciate the videos you post. The information and production quality are above all. Know that the time and effort you put into your TH-cam channel are very much appreciated. I'm hoping to get out to the beach tomorrow (I line in Nor Cal), we've had epic storms with significant erosion. Warm regards, Robert
Hello Robert. I'm thinking of canceling my Manticore order, and wondering how your beach hunt went? Epic beach erosion. I hunt in and around Los Angeles, but have been sick and can't get out, a real bummer for me.
I have never detected before, I ordered the Manticore the first of December and in search of finding information on the in's and out's of detecting and how to use the Manticore (if it ever comes in Lol) I found your channel. The first video I watched of yours I thought, this guy is a goofball. Then I came across another video of yous and now I watch everyone. I love the way you explain things. For me I need it explained in slow redneck terms. Lol Thank you for going into details. So many TH-camrs have been metal detecting for so long that for us beginner's that have never even had a detector in my hand I need all the help I can get with the simple stuff from you guys. Why, when, how and terms type of things. Thank you again for your great info and video's. Rick
Personally I think a beginner is better of with something like a vanquish. The Manticore is a difficult machine for more experienced and advanced detectorist. You wil not find more with an expensive machine if you don’t understand what you are doing. The learning curve will be steeper.
12:45 I enjoy all your videos but sure glad I saw this one. I’m going to Clearwater Fl for 2 wks in February. Definitely taking my detector! I never gave low tide/high tide a thought. I’ll be anxious to detect the beach there at both times. Thanks for another important tip!
I’m 100% with you on the, I really think we only have access to 1% hypotheses… even when a storm pushes a bunch of stuff up and concentrates it for us. There is a well more out there…
Manticore VDI catalog. I developed a procedure to air test artifacts. Air Testing Starting an air test near the coil may initiate Auto/Tracking Ground Balance and filter out the artifact/target. Filtering the artifact/target out, will cause you to loose some detection depth. Air Test Procedure for the Minelab Manticore: 1) Start with a low Recovery Speed and increase it as necessary. Noise Cancel after each adjustment. 2) Begin with a high Sensitivity value that is not chirpy, Noise Cancel, Ground Balance. Try to increase Sensitivity again, Noise Cancel again. 3) Don't use Auto/Tracking Ground Balance for an Air Test. Because you are repeatably sweeping the artifact past the coil, you may be training the Auto/Tracking Ground Balance to filter out the artifact. Instead use Manual Ground Balance. On high mineralized soils, sweep the coil over the ground to Manual Ground Balance, don't pump it. You can also manually set the Ground Balance value yourself. 3) Begin the air test with the artifact far away from the coil, advance the artifact toward the coil.
The toe ring did you have it in Dp tone? I also feel the the 700 has a wilder Jumpy VdI on it too. As for depth I dug an 11inch hole and it Smacked out a Quarter So I through a Nickel and it smacked on it too. But that was dry sand. probably not a lot of black sand and Iron. Thanks For these Videos.
Like Lilly Tomlin on SNL used to say…. “One ringey dingey. Two ringey dingeys. Now you’ll never be able to unhear that every time you find a ring. 😂. So I’m assuming when you say you’re digging a lot less iron you still find as many gold rings? No way to know, is there. My surf master PI finds a rusty nail head half way to China. Still using a real shovel for digging in the wet sand That OCTOPUS toe ring is awesome!
Thanks for making the video, Merrill. Love it. I'm a tad disappointed that the Manticore did not really seem to be a vast improvement over the NOX 800. Not yet anyway. I just hope that the flooding issues that the Nox had will not occur with this machine.
Hi Merrill nice seeing you in 2023.I find many of the lead musket balls on the Jersey beaches all different sizes.I never thought about it being a musket ball i thought perhaps it had something to do with fishing or nets

I found an old silver signet ring like that one. The back mark might possibly say made by Reed & Barton? They're old silversmiths from the mid 1800's. Normally they made silverware but they did produce high end silver rings that sell for good money considering a silver ring is like 3 bucks worth of silver. That's a nice find regardless to the makers it's an old one for sure. It's a shame about all the pumping of the sand going on. They're doing it to the coast along the Jersey shore also. The last few years these storms have really tore up the coast which was nice for detecting because it left a ton of targets along the water line. Your right there's a lot of stuff in that surf that washes up then drags back out. Too bad about the sand dredging in the fall instead of the spring because of these low blow out tides we get in the winter. I can imagine what's off the shore in NY being the huge volume of people there for two centuries. When I see old pics of Coney Island and other shots of the beaches I drool in jealously even though the Jersey shore has been a hot spot for summer tourists also for quite a long time. The issue is other then a few places like Atlantic city, Ocean City, Asbury Park etc too much of the coast has shorter steeper beaches unlike those long shallow flats that get those sweet coin and jewelry holding cuts. That was another nice hunt as usual
Great video, Merrill. Seems like with the extended VDI numbers, one will have to deal with a wider range of numbers for a given target type (I.e. a penny). A suggestion for a video, given all the free time you have (hahaha)…A compilation video, “21 Finds With 21 Detectors”. Give you a chance to showcase all of your detector collection.
I really liked this video. I pre-ordered, been watching as many of theses as I can. I'm starting to see a pattern, the manticore vdi has ctx dna. Those numbers correspond what I'm used to. Stainless hits odd, real odd. 2D all over the place in the low conductivity range. Nickels hit 12.13 on the CTX, that seems like 25'ish. As I was watching your hits the vdi ranges felt familiar.
Minelab has always had problem with the automatic ground balancing and auto ground tracking. On all the previous detectors and I think the 900 and manticore inherited the same problem the previous auto matic setting don't get the proper ground balance setting .To combat this problem go to manual ground balance. Pump the coil about a foot high for a minute strait like noise auto noise cancel.this helped me in highly minerilized ground and less iron faulting.and also helps the iron discrimination settings.this problem is inherited from previous minelab and throws all the other settings off and you don't get as accurate readings and you don't get the the depth you should or the proper iron discrimination settings and this makes the whole machine under perform all the way around.
Late to the game update: WM09 wireless unit does not like to have the Maticore main unit in the water and the WM09 on you shoulder ... lose connection about 4-5 inches into the water.
Love your treasure chest! 😂. Such awesome reviews by the way! These have been wildly beneficial as I’m going through the education and research phase prior to buying. Found a very lightly used Manticore for $1,000 I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on.
If I get another detector, I would like one with target trace. But, I probably should focus on sound and not target ID right now. But, I'm not getting a new detector anytime soon! ... brahhh 😂 Found my first ever ring yesterday in the low tide treasure line! Totally encased in concretions. I shared the beach with at least 3 other detectorists that day. They can't get them all! 👍😎 💍..this one wasn't anything valuable, but special to me. My only first ring find.
Greetings from a Manticore user from Germany. If you ever make it to Germany I'd be happy to go detecting with you and have a beer. Keep up the great work.
Wish mine would get delivered . Looks like its going to take a while to learn the new numbers. Even though you didn't play the music , I could hear it in my head . lol
Great day merrill. Manti performed well. I'll stick with my xp. Just hope they release an update soon. I can see xp in the future going to wireless charging. What do you think?
how do you like the headphone situation on manticore? not wireless and the cord plug in area looks wonky to me? I like the wireless deus 2 and it seems odd to return back to those old fashioned cords, how are the ergonomics of that machine?
To get a good screen shot mount a second gopro to the handle of the manticore focused on the screen- run all the time and then edit it in to your video. Would be epic!!
Very informative. Still thinking of the 900. Bought your digital book on finding rings a few weeks ago. Highly recommend it. Going to Florida soon. Cant wait to put my 800 through the paces down there,,,
I'm looking at a Manticore primarily as a freshwater machine and park hunting. In the water, I'll dig anything repeatable. I don't really want to do that on land...
You have one of the best metal detecting channels on TH-cam

I really liked this video. I pre-ordered, been watching as many of theses as I can. I'm starting to see a pattern, the manticore vdi has ctx dna. Those numbers correspond what I'm used to. Happy new year Big Toe!
Love your videos and website. Thank you for everything you do.
Got my manticore , done some tests at home alot of rings I had access to came up 3 thru 15 on vdi
Again, your video is proving one thing ... we have to dig on everything 😎
Nice octopus on the toe ring!!
I’ll try your suggestion today. Thanks Robert!
Nice video I will wait for the next one 👍
Stainless also comes up really low on the equinoxes. The 8 to 10 range on the target ID.
Search for my response in this chat about the different types of stainless steels. Carry a small magnet with you.
Good video Merrill, you were killing it today. Hopefully I will get mine before the snow melts. Good day from Montana.
Thanks Donald!
Another great video. Like how you help us beginners. I’m 60 and getting into metal detecting. Watching your videos before I buy a metal detector.

That’s epic brother!!!!! Congratulations!!!!
Greetings from a Manticore user from Germany.
If you ever make it to Germany I'd be happy to go detecting with you and have a beer.
Keep up the great work.
Wish mine would get delivered . Looks like its going to take a while to learn the new numbers. Even though you didn't play the music , I could hear it in my head . lol
Nice vid Merrill 👍
Thank you for doing this video I have been waiting for quite awhile happy New Year to you and what a fantastic day
Hey Meryl, what did the bracelet thing ring up and what kind of target trace please, great video!!🙌🏻😉
Nice hunt always fun to find rings!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Thank you for the learning lessons and the great video content. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Robert
Yeah ive waited for this thank u sir
Great day merrill. Manti performed well. I'll stick with my xp. Just hope they release an update soon. I can see xp in the future going to wireless charging. What do you think?
When those dredges replenish the beach, do they have some type of filter to collect targets?
I don’t think so. I did a close up of a dredge in this live stream th-cam.com/video/zto486hXNYk/w-d-xo.html
Great hunt & finds. Nice end to the year!👍👍😁💯💯
Thank you!
love the video
how do you like the headphone situation on manticore? not wireless and the cord plug in area looks wonky to me? I like the wireless deus 2 and it seems odd to return back to those old fashioned cords, how are the ergonomics of that machine?
To get a good screen shot mount a second gopro to the handle of the manticore focused on the screen- run all the time and then edit it in to your video. Would be epic!!
Very informative. Still thinking of the 900. Bought your digital book on finding rings a few weeks ago. Highly recommend it. Going to Florida soon. Cant wait to put my 800 through the paces down there,,,
Nice finds brother!! Looking forward to the target ID cheat sheet video!!
I'm looking at a Manticore primarily as a freshwater machine and park hunting. In the water, I'll dig anything repeatable. I don't really want to do that on land...
I am a new follower but i see you finds amazing gold
Only one question kan you find a thin gold 18k chain with the manti.
Gerry from Gerry's Detectors pulled a bunch of gold rings in Cancun. The gold was low on the scale. 20's-30's.
Nice beach sand drop lots of targets there should be gold there 100% well done big fan 💙🏖🇬🇷👍
