Great review Rikky, very informative and ever so useful for potential buyers, thank you.
I purchased a 2021 XMAX 300 in December 2021, changing from a white/red 2016 BMW R1200R LC roadster that I really loved. The reason for the change however was due to the Beemer being just too much motorcycle for me, a bit heavy-ish (even with low CoG & 790mm seat height) and was actually a bit cumbersome and not really pleasant to ride in traffic- not it's forte for sure - and I simply just wasn't riding as much as I used to. But on the open road - well it was a capable 'intergalactic cruiser' for sure. Around town? Not so much.
Now I'm a shorty (5' 6" / 167 cm) with 29" inseam and had not considered a scooter until I read many reviews not unlike yours. I no longer want nor need to go at warp speed, but simply want to be able to cruise comfortably on the open road.
After almost 6 months of ownership, my valiant little XMAX has coaxed me into riding more in the last 6 months than I have in the last 4 years.
Do I miss the power of the Beemer. Nope, the XMAX is quite adequate for my needs thank you very much - a car or other bike has to be trying pretty darn hard to beat me away from the lights - and if they do try that hard, then they're welcome to it.
Do I miss the up/down quick shifter of the Beemer and changing gears - nope, not a jot. I just love the constant and very useable flow of power from the willing little single and it is just SO much FUN!
I purchased it about 500 kms from my home in Sydney, Australia, catching the train up in the morning and rode it home the same day. Open road performance? Very adequate and actually punches well above its weight. It will easily cruise ALL DAY at 120-130kph and I even saw burst to an indicated 150 kph - that's fast enough for my 67 year young self.
I find the seat height 'reasonably manageable', easy to get one foot down and flat and because, as you pointed out, it really is so light and well-balanced, so for me it is just not a concern at all - actually it was a revelation.
At first, like you I too found the front brake quite 'wooden' in feel, lacking initial bite and power. But now with more use and around 3,000 mostly commuting miles on the clock, the brakes have become very, very good and stopping with confidence on this scoot is one of the very good things about it.
Love the comfort afforded by the XMAX (I opted for the comfort seat but the original standard seat was very, very good too.) On a trip I love the fact I can now stretch out my legs and move them around to different comfortable positions - no more sore knees and hip joints for me! TBH, I got off the bike after riding the 500 kms home in one stint and felt I could easily have just kept going for another 500 kms.
Love the storage (I also fitted a 39 litre OEM top box) and yes, you can fit TWO full face helmets under the seat. I ride it work as often as I can and can easily fit my Aerostich Darien 2 piece jacket and pants and short boots (ATGATT) locked under the seat and my helmet secured in the locked top box. This means when I walk into the office, I don't 'look' like a motorcyclist - not that there's anything wrong with that!
I've fitted the Universal stay to mount my phone and the lower sports dark screen. No buffeting and I kinda' like being in the clear air.
So for those who are 'on the fence' about this scooter malarkey, do yourself a favour, put your preconceptions aside and just go get a test ride. Be sure to get onto the freeway or open road and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The practicality, performance and sheer fun of this amazing little bike never fails to put a smile on my dial. Hope this helps and thanks again Rikky for your excellent review.

Hi Tony, thanks for your fantastic response and feedback! Reading this has made me like the little XMAX even more now! It does indeed perform very well for a scooter with such a modest engine size and power output. It sounds like it suits you down to the ground and if it makes you do more miles that you did with your previous machine, then it has to be the right choice 😊
All that storage does make life that much easier too when going somewhere and not wanting to cart all of your kit around. I'm thinking about buying an R.E. Himalayan at the mo but now I'm wavering slightly!!

I'm exactly with you my friend. I will be 70 in Feb and this is the most pleasure I've ever had on a 2 Wheeler!!! It is so easy and fun to ride and the top speed is crazy good. It's higher speed range is so smooth I have to be surprised I'm really going in mid 80s mph. It does it so effortless and Harleys have to bang and clunk through 5 gears just to try and stay up !!!!!! 😆 lol. I'll never have to get another cycle of any means .....once you get an Xmax you're set for life of comfort and adventure !!!!!

I was told that the screen is not adjustable but going by feedback from my viewers, the screen can be adjusted after all. I have edited the video slightly to remove a line of text from the video which gave the duff information (video should be updated by the end of the 9th June 2022). Sorry about the incorrect info!

Really good review Rikky. Totally agree with the comments made. I purchased one at the end of May and have been very pleased with it. I use it primarily for work as I travel between various building sites and it does everything I need it too. I can keep my site helmet, bag and hi-viz stuff under the seat and then when I get to each place I swap it them with my helmet and gloves and sometimes coat! It is equally comfortable on the motorway or doing 20miles an hour in urban environments which is most of North London it seems now!. The brakes were a bit hard at first but as I am at almost 1000 miles now and they have bedded in and work really well now. Fuel economy is great too. Parking when I get to the various sites is also very easy. The only thing I have found is that it is quite heavy to move around when not riding, not compared to a harley or large capacity bike, but compared to a 125cc if you are considering upgrading. On the road though it is as light as a feather and really easy to ride. The seat is pretty good except that the rain runs down the lumbar support and under where you sit which is unpleasant unless you are wearing waterproof trousers. The suspension is okay but you really notice bumps and uneven roads. I did try a Honda Forza and a Suzuki Burgman aswell but the Yamaha suited me better. Also, the Yamaha dealer was really helpful whereas the Honda dealer didn't appear to care once I said it was a cash purchase and I could not find any new Burgman's for sale anywhere near me at the time I was looking! Anyway, keep up the great reviews.

Hey Jonathan thank you so much for your thoughts! Very sorry that I missed your message, I wish I would have seen it at the time! Great to hear how you using your Xmax in practice. I hope it's still doing a great job for you. Useful to know how the rain runs down the seat!! One thing us folks hear about London is how bike thefts are rife... do you have to park in public/in bike parks and do you use security such as a chain?

Hi Rikky. Nice review well balanced like the bike!! Just ordered one here in Spain, my first scooter rather than motorbike of which I have owned many. I’m really excited to get it. Agree with most of what you said because I have had a test drive. Just in case you’re wondering about the price here it’s €7300 and I get a top box for that bigger screen which I think was a concern for you and the back rest on the top box. Well done Joseph

The screen does adjust manually, it lifts 2 inches. The so called center light is the main beam, admittedly pretty useless. Also the handlebars are adjustable with about 10 minutes work.

    • @RikkyTang
