Had my 7III for several weeks and poring over all sorts of videos and articles - yours was absolutely the best to show how this works. The 'show and tell' was perfect, and I finally get it! Thanks so much.

Excellent! I was tired of using joystick to move focus point to the desired place. This video just solves the issue. Thanks a bunch! You're a savior! 😬
Thank you very much for showing us how to achieve the results we need... It's only taken me about a year to realise just how to set the touch focus .. I appreciate your tutorial.. Thank you...
Well explained, Jay. Sony should have enabled touch to “turn auto focus on” and “release shutter” for photography mode. Olympus and Fuji have had this feature.
Love the video! I just got the A7III and absolutely love this functionality - how amazing! Thanks for explaining. Love your other videos too, very informative.
Wow! It's awesome! Like the other guys before me have said: I have wandering out some time without knowing about this feature. It's like having available a light saber instead of a rod, or a fighting jet instead of a bike. I really appreciate that. I really subscribed on your channel. Thank you. Take care you too.
3:56 you say that the touchscreen stays when in flexible spot. It does if you only tap it but you can touch and drag and the focus position moves around. It’s much better than having to use the joystick!
Hello! Thank you for this video. How can I set the camera so that when I press the screen, it also focuses to that point at the same press? With these instructions, I can only move the focus point, and then I still have to do a half shutter press to focus there.
Hi, I just got my a7iii today, for stills, I have tried the settings which you have explained in this video but whenever I touch the area I want to focus, it does not focus, on the screen two things pops up, one is "focus cancel" and the other is the hand symbol but the area does not get focused. Am I suppose the press the shutter button to focus that area ? Or just touching the area should focus ? I am just making sure that I did not get a safe give unit. :) thanks!!
When using AF-S or AF-A focus mode the camera only focuses when you press the shutter half way when taking photos. However if turn on Pre-AF in the menu the camera should focus when you touch around. Also, if you are using AF-C Mode it will be continuously focusing and should change when you touch the screen. What you are actually doing with the touch to focus is setting the focus area to where you touched, not actually focusing per say. But it depends on the mode... When recording video, the focus will automatically change to where you touch, because it is in AF-C Mode when recording. You can also change the touch to focus option to tracking, and that will automatically change the focus even when taking photos without pressing the shutter halfway.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks Jay, I have put the pre AF on and also put the mode to AF C, still.does not focus on touch. I might have to return the camera then, looks like this is faulty.

Yeah, that is just the focus area you are changing. The shutter button still needs to be pressed down half way for the focus to change unfortunately. The newer cameras work more like what you are thinking...
@@Jason_Hermann When I press down half way or press the back focus button..nothing happens.. the little square moves to where i touch it on the screen, the little finger icon comes up but when i press the shutter half way..nothing happens..no focusing I can take a shot but it will be out of focus.

Yes, it's both an indication that you are using it, and letting you know the center button on the rear control dial will cancel the focus point you added. Also on the top of the screen is another indicator/ button you can press to cancel the touch focus.

Thanks Jay, I managed to get touch focus working for still. Don't ask how coz so many.options and interdependencies I lost track. The cancel icon looks different for stills mode, but at least touch focus works in both movies and stills now.
I noticed the same behavior on my Sony a73 when the joystick is set to AF on (the center press) then it will not focus only if I use the AF on button for back button focus it will focus in that touch area that seems to be a bug in the firmware. I used the af-on Button for eye-af and the center press on the joystick for af-on. Hi Jay, very well explained video, congrats! However, after making all the settings that you show in this video, I still keep getting the "focus Cancel" message on the screen, and the camera doesn't focus. Why is that? Maybe it's because I am using a Sigma lens with an adaptor? Why do you think?
Hello Jose, Focus Cancel means that you have touch focus active on the screen. Press the center button on the back of the camera dial and that will cancel it. The the focus should be on whatever mode you had it on. Touch over rides if enabled...
Hey Jay - I'm trying to find out something that I don't see addressed in your videos or others. I'm trying to videotape the creation of artwork on a desk - and I can't get the focus to lock on the art and ignore my hands and pens. Is there a setting I'm missing?
Hello Sandy, In this case I would use manual focus since the art is not moving. So I would first use auto focus to focus on the art, then switch the focus to manual. It should then be locked on the art and will not change if your hands are in the scene. Jay
Hello Alan, the focus moves only when you touch the screen and let go. Touching and dragging does not work as a focus tracker in other words. Therefore in your example you would need to tap along the faces repeatedly for the focus to change.
Touch focus is very slow in my case... AF track sens is set to high. After I touch a spot it takes like 2-3 seconds before the A7iii starts to focus. What do I wrong? Pre AF is on
Hi Jay, thanks for your thoughtful, helpful short tutorial. Excellent. I am still learning and have three questions related to the touch auto-focus that I would like to ask you about. I am shooting video. 1. Sometimes the touch screen stops working. I must unintentionally turn it off. How am I be doing that? 2. When I use touch screen I see the icon switch between AF-C and MF. Why? What does that mean? 3. My camera is five years old. I used see a little focus box on the screen that I could move by touch or using the 'joystick' -- I don't know how I activated it and I can't find it. Can you tell me what it was, by this description? Did it disappear in a software upgrade? I'll leave a tip in your tip jar or via patreon. Thanks again!
Am I right in thinking that if you have touch focus enabled, it stays locked and focused (after touching the screen) until you cancel it, even when in AF-C mode? Super-useful to have this to over ride AF-Continuous focusing in some situations
Why are you touching the shutter button? If you have to touch the shutter button, then it's not really "touch screen focusing" right? ? So it's really just setting a spot, but not actually focusing? It doesn't seem to do any focusing until you touch the shutter button?
Thanks for all your efforts. I tried all the things you suggested BUT enabling false focus and manually throwing the focus ring is so much faster. I have been shooting since ‘81 and professionally since ‘89. May I suggest to everyone to practice focusing manually.. no intent on taking photos,, just throw the ring clockwise and counter clockwise to build muscle memory as if you are practicing scales on a guitar. You’ll be better off. This is how the pro focus pullers do it when shooting film.
Manual focusing is not faster than touch focus unless you are the flash. Use common sense when replying to someone video, understand the context and understand the audience that the video is intended.
Hey Jay, that was great! I just changed my setting from Absolute to Relative, so thanks for that- it should help. Also, I didn't know about canceling via the little on screen icon- cool! I noticed that that only works when using the screen though, not when engaging the EVF. One thing I have trouble with is for the screen to even register my touch, but I am used to that problem from using other devices. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thank you for the comments and I'm glad the video helped you learn a few new tricks ;) Thanksgiving was great thanks, and I hope yours was as well...
Thanks!
