God, what a rush! I am the moron who discovered Dennis Chambers only a couple of years ago on Zildjian Live and tracked this one down for a breathtaking performance that had none other than Sting himself whistling in approval. A huge vote of thanks to Santana for giving a spot solo to one of the greatest drummers of all time.
I have written elsewhere about him- In the early 90's I took drum lessons at a music store in Glen Burnie Maryland. He was a customer there and I would see him there on occasion. I never used to bother him but I can tell you he was very humble and down to earth . He would play on a kit to try it out like any other customer, never acted like a big shot. And he is a big shot!
One night I was at the 8x 10 club in Baltimore. Stu Ham, Jeff Berlin, and Billy Sheehan did sets. He was standing next to me. It was a cold January Monday night. Was like 40 people there to see 3 great bass players jam. Billy saw him and asked him to sit in. I was in the presence of royality. Will never forget that night.
Any one who hates on this living legend is deaf dumb and blind! I've seen this man at a drum clinic live right here in my hometown, and let's just say that this video does him no justice compared to seeing him live up close, and in person! I was blown away! Totally insane. 😳
That is true I have a duel with him and Marvin Smitty Smith that I recorded in like 30 years ago it was .. when you watch the video you thought it was in fast forward it was so ridiculous
Taught everyone how to seat a drum head. Standing on the rim and jumping up and down. I've done this everytime since seeing this and the tuning is perfect. The man Is a gem.
Right now, he's my fav drummer. So much passion, really knows his art. An inspiration to me, as of late. I will always love the great Barry Kerch, but Dennis Chambers has stolen my heart.

MAJESTIFIED, you are 100% correct! My buddy Dave had a music store in Columbus, Ga. about 20 years ago. Dave was a really nice guy and a great drummer himself. Anyway, Dave got Dennis Chambers to come to his store and do a clinic. I took my 12 or 13 year old son, DJ with me just in case I had a heart attack and died he could tell his mother and she'd understand. There's nothing like seeing him in person. I heard it. I saw it. And I still couldn't believe it. I didn't know my eyes and ears could see and hear that fast. And the nicest guy ever. On top of that Dave took us backstage to meet him. Now my kids know the Old Man is not star struck about anything or anybody but on this day, my son and I were the cat's meow. Only problem was I didn't know if I should address that joker as Your Highness, Your Majesty, Grand Poobah, or something. He was clearly not of the same planet bro. Smooth, clean and fast. Have mercy he was fast. And it was effortless. Thankfully I survived that evening and lived to talk about two great guys, my buddy Dave and Dennis Chambers.
He could play drums while baking a cake, taking a shower, playing chess, and exercising, all at the same time, and still look like he does it every day..
literally LOLed at 3:21. I love doing stuff like that in my drum solos.... slowing down then right when people think it's about to stop just start going crazy. Although I'm no Dennis Chambers he can drum like no other, but that doesn't stop me from pretending =P
Dennis came to Drumtech in London where I studied for two years; I just left when he came to do his clinic but my drum teacher who was still there, attended the clinic. He said Dennis did an awesome clinic and was every bit as good as expected.
Whenever I watch a legend solo I try to remember that true masters are watching and saying, "did you see what he sneaked in there?" And I look for subtle hidden magic... and then I find it! It's more fun to look for them cause Dennis is DEFINITELY doing some crazy rudiments and ghost notes etc
@JezenThomas That's the thing; it wasn't made to be a 'groovey' solo, this one was about experimenting between time; you can hear one part of the kit staying at the same tempo whilst changing with his other limbs. That's insanely hard and takes a lot of skill and concentration. Not to mention at the end where he got the entire crowd going, so crowd participation. It was more theoretical than 'felt' as such, but it was still a brilliant solo!

I have to approach this as a guitar player as i am & not a drummer. Great respect for Dennis as one of the greats no doubt about it . Maybe I'm just old fashioned but Mike Shrieve's solo at both Woodstock & say Tanglewood were not just covering the bases but he exploded on that simple kit & for myself it's a much more spontaneous & powerful solo than what Dennis does here. I take it he was a guest here & the pro he is he played it the way he felt . I'll still have to go with Mike Shrieve’s playing . Two awesome drummers just different styles & definitely approach's .
As a average drummer I could practice what Mike did with transcripts and add my own twist , Dennis not so much , not even on the same level mike was nice but nowhere near as technical or creative
@paul levine Completely no reason to compare the two. If you reach the same level of artistry, feel and inspiring other musicians as Dennis, and then someone *asks* for your opinion comparing those two completely unrelated things, then say what you just said.

Io ho avuto la fortuna di vedere il concerto proprio nel 2006 ad Assago unica data italiana! Ai tempi devo essere onesto non sapevo chi fosse Santana! Grazie a mio padre ho potuto conoscere un grande artista...e Chambers mi ha lasciato a bocca aperta con il suo assolo molto simile a questo del video...ma dal vivo è stato davvero impressionante!

I've been playing the drums for 53 years. He makes me want to give it up,lol. He's amazing. It's cool to see Sting looking on!
