House of 3 containers on San Diego hill blends with landscape

  • After purchasing a piece of land in the mountains of unincorporated San Diego County, Mike and Shawn McConkey set out to build their dream home from shipping containers. “This is zoned agricultural land out here so you can actually have a little cottage industry or a winery... or a container house.”
With the help of architect Chris Bittner, they designed a 700-square-foot cottage from three containers (one of which they found on the property). By building most of it themselves, Mike and Shawn kept things affordable: the total cost was $160,000, including design fees and permits. They also budgeted by living for two and a half years in a 28-foot travel trailer while they waiting for permits and to complete the build.
They stayed on budget in the interior by mixing IKEA and reclaimed items with a few high end pieces, like a $3800 rolling garage door that opens the home to the outside and unobstructed mountain views.
The home is a hybrid of containers and stick frame structure with ceilings as high as 13 feet between the containers to made the small space feel larger and to allow for natural cooling. To keep the home running at peak efficiency, the McConkeys put in a cool roof (white, to reflect the hot San Diego sun) and a high efficiency tankless water heater.
Since completing the home, Bittner says he’s received 50 calls from people interested in their own container home dreams. “They all start with, ‘I’ve always dreamed of building a container home, how much does it cost? Is it the same as framing?’ And I tell them all the same thing, ‘It certainly can be the same as framing, it can quickly get more expensive than framing.’”
Mike, who is a building superintendent for his day job, is happy he had the chance to make his own grown-up LEGO construction. “I always played with LEGO blocks and stuff as a kid. I just like to build stuff. It’s a hobby and what I do for a living so it’s kind of natural to take something unique and transform it.”

I really like the wide EAVES -- that's what is missing from most container homes I've seen. Glad they aren't going to paint it.
I have a 3-inch thick maple floor that was pulled from a college gymnasium. We didn't have much time, so we just cut 10x6 sections and figured it out later -- the floor cost nothing, but had to be out in one day. My builder had the great idea of pulling apart the boards and laying them like a regular wood floor. When they were being sanded to a flat floor, there were areas of paint all over, so we asked the floor company to stop as soon as the surface was flat. Everyone remarks how fantastic it looks.

It's always funny to hear how many people have been influenced by LEGO growing up. It definitely helped develop my creativity and imagination.
I love this space; everything about it is well thought out. They did a nice job on the upcycling and salvaging of wood and fittings.

This is a nice design for Liberia. What I like about these containers houses is that they are practical to meet the Emergency housing needs for the low income families. Designs should fit the landscapes, while addressing the lifestyle of the people that lives there.

We had a family friend living in Florida .he had these ideas that he also created to make come true. They were not afraid of taking risks. Financial freedom of course helps.i would appreciate a new life n opportunity to walk free. They shared the same surname as I have but they were not related. He ran restaurants by the seaside city here. I love entrepreneur spirit.

Great video to watch. So many ideas crammed into this short feature. I have been reading Fine Homebuilding for years and have researched home design for decades and this video is one of the best I have come across. These very interesting people went through the long and involved process of doing most of the work themselves, and letting the form and function of that process help the home design itself! Superb!

Wonderful concept. I love the combination of industrial feel (keeping the containers as containers), and rustic feel (the use of recycled materials from Habitat, and the rescued timber from San Diego Urban Timber - get that water mark off the counter - I notice everything). Once it's finally completed, and it nearly is, this will be a wonderful home. And I LOVE the site! Congratulations!

  • @NoteFromSELF

This showed me that my shipping container house design I've settled on (yeah, right) will cost significantly less. Mine is more minimalist, with very few cuts in the containers. And, I'll building a "garage" - which will have the expensive roll-up door also, out of a steel building with galvalume siding that will be used for entertaining and extra living space. My kitchen will be mostly outdoors. Love this one though.

If you're not in the right area or have no experience building or metal work it'll end up costing you more than building a regular house. Plus the permits ECT. Those inspectors are shit heads and will turn you down just for spite sometimes

I love this! The overhang looks great and the high ceilings! I appreciate why they like the rawness of the containers, but I would probably paint it or have a simple modern siding... it's a matter of taste.

No, it would be more of a headache. Inspectors have to inspect all that stuff, too. Just cause you're not on grid doesn't exempt your house from being inspected... unless you're WAY WAY out in the middle of nowhere where an inspector will never go.

It was really a nice surprise to finally see something like this near San Diego. I live in La Mesa (grew up in San Diego proper) and while my parents' approx. 1,800 square foot home in Clairemont is now worth $1.2 mil, I am still a bit surprised at how expensive this project was. Would love to see more (if there are any) tiny houses that are located out this way. I do believe that there is also a container home somewhere near downtown. I thought that I saw it driving once but for the life of me can't recall exactly where it was so if anyone knows, please comment. I'm not trying to go knocking on anyone's door lol...merely wanted to know if anyone has ever seen what I may be thinking of as perhaps I am thinking of something I saw closer to Los Angeles even. Anyway, thanks for featuring this and my best to the homeowners...hopefully we'll continue to get a bit more rain since it still looks awfully dry out there. Cheers! =^..^=
