    Hi Tom & Julie & special guest, oh my lord so many cool artefacts, too many to count but I loved seeing that old windlass and those engines still intact. That beautiful ore looked like it had flecks of gold in but I could be wrong, it was stunning though. What a fantastic find and well worth the hike, imagine them hauling all of that equipment etc out there, just wow. Thank you for sharing, much love to you both. xx 💖

      Hi Sue, that's the best windlass we have seen with all the parts still in place. I love those old engines, too, especially that Aurora. I wish I could hear it running. The ore vein is amazing and it was all well worth the hike. I'm always amazed at how ingenius the miners were at getting the heavy pieces of equipment up the canyon and mounted in place on the side of a steep mountainside. Unreal. Thanks for your support and lovely comment as always. We appreciate it!

  • @TheRockgremlin

    So my eyes dried up watching this video....because I didn't want to blink! Incredible find! Those minerals at 17:00 - looks like copper sulfides: Covallite (dark blue), Chalcopyrite (golden mineral around the edges), and Chalcocite (greyish mineral near the top). If those minerals contained gold or silver the miners would not have left them in the wall - they would've knocked them out with a pick and processed 'em. The old-timers were pretty good at taking the easily accessible high grade and leaving the pretty minerals of lesser value.
    I really wonder how much of a profit the miners actually made considering how much $$$ was invested in the heavy machinery and how much would've been lost to transportation costs. I feel like. the remoteness of this mine would've gobbled up most of the profits. Regardless, the ore must have been pretty high grade to justify all the effort that went into starting this mine. As always, great video, and thank you so much for sharing this unique gem!!

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the geological information on the minerals there. It seems like the same old story with mines being profitable. The transportation and milling/processing of the ore barely leave any profit for the mine owner. I'm sure you are correct about the miners taking all the high-grade ore out. They were pretty sharp about that I'm sure. Thanks for the nice comment and glad that you enjoyed the video!

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, some nice artifacts in this one. I think you're close on the dates. I believe it was mostly mined out by 1917 according to a report I read. There might have been a few people poking around later than that. It was a gold mine and the quartz outcropping can be seen like a white ribbon across the whole mountainside. There are some wild looking minerals here. Thanks, Kimbra!

    A little research found that the Aurora Engine Co of Stockton, CA was an owned subsidiary of the Holt Tractor Co, which eventually became Caterpillar. The Aurora engines were gasoline powered and were the power for the first Holt Tractors to eventually supplant the steam tractors they mfg. They were apparently in business as early as 1900 and maybe earlier. There was a note that the ability of Aurora to produce engines at five per month slowed production of the early production of Holt Gas powered tractors.
    This was an incredible mine to explore with all of the artifacts still there. The fact that those drive wheels still turned is amazing and it looked like the brake material was still present.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for doing some leg work on that research, David. That is what my research on the Aurora engine yielded, too. Awesome video Tom and Julie. That huge engine I bet was a diesel. Only 65 hp but I bet a ton of torque. Only 500 RPM I noticed on the sign. Looked like a fun hike with a nice variety of goodies and artifacts to find. I love the old Ford radiator shroud and also you showed a side opening hood probably off that same Ford. Love the video as I do all of your videos. Great job.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the old Ford stuff was fun to see. I think I saw what might have been the chassis that went along with the hood and radiator shroud. I never made it over to take a close look at it. I mentioned it and took a quick shot of it just as I got to the lower part of the mine. I could see a four cylinder engine with no head. The old Aurora was a real beast of an engine. I would love to have heard it running back in the day. Low rpm and I bet you're correct about the torque. Thanks, Stephen!

    • @sheriffjohn2498
      @sheriffjohn2498 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Off topic a bit. I worked on a boat that had a 6 cylinder Morse diesel engine. Each cylinder head was about 18 inches in diameter and had a top speed of 300 RPM. Each time a piston hit top dead center the cylinder head would lift and a little bit of oil dripped out. To put the boat into reverse you had to stop the engine then start the engine in reverse. Direct drive! Air start and only had 6 shifts before you were out of air. You had to be good at parking or go back into the bay and do circles until the air pressure came back up. The best was the sound, besides all the valves were visual, everything was slo mo and went Ta-puk-i-ta, Ta-puk-i-ta, Ta-puk-i-ta. Danny Kaye described the sound in a old movie. Gotta say it kinda fast to get the idea

    • @TheShornak

    That green rock in the beginning you were holding up was either serpentine (if it was hard) or copper sulfate (if it was chalky and flaky). I'm going with copper sulfate because it runs with quartz, iron ore and gold. Love the video and what you guys do.

That old wooden hand crank in the mine, it made the same squeaky sound like that windmill, when they we're waiting for Charlies at the train station in the movie Once upon a time in the West with Henry Fonda and Charlies Bronson, talk about a flash back when I heard that sound. Where did the miners typically live while working this mine? Would they have tents? How far away to a town? Did they have a cook and food and water here for the workers? Very neat mine and equipment. Thank you very much!

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I remember correctly there was a cabin site not far below the mine site. Otherwise they would have stayed in tents. I don't imagine that a mine of this small size would have a designated camp cook, but who knows? That's a good question. They would either get water from a spring or have to haul it in with the other supplies. Thanks for watching and commenting, John!

    What an awesome site and artifacts! That place would be worth hiking in with camping equipment and staying a few days to explore it further.
